1) Introduction
Vehicle keys from late 1994 had an integrated device called a transponder.
The word transponder is short for transmitter and receiver and came to use
around 1944. A basic description of a transponder is an electronic chip
which sends (transmits) and picks up (receives) signals when the key is
inserted in the ignition. A coil around the ignition barrel is attached to the
immobiliser ECU which interprets these signals into meaningful data. And
if valid the car will be allowed to start. Newer vehicles don’t have a
separate immobiliser box –instead integrating all electronics into one ECU
box.
Immobilisers have effectively reduced vehicle crime but also made the job
more complex a matter when legitimately replacing old or lost keys.
Replacement keys with a transponder chip must first be ‘programmed’ to
the immobiliser unit. This is where the AutoTEC tool comes into play. It
actually requests the immobiliser to add a key, rather than any intrusive
action, so making it safe and easy to use with simple screen step-by-step
actions.
The cut of a key is beyond the scope of this manual but basically there are
a few types and equipment can be purchase to cut these keys. The ‘cut
code’ corresponding to the cuts on the key are available from the main-
dealer and again usually supplied by giving the vehicles VIN number. If this
information is not available then an extra key could be cut to an original or
replacement made with a matching barrow and key from another vehicle.
You won’t find it printed anywhere but with the exception of Ford and early
Nissan, be wary when using new fixed code aftermarket keys, i.e. for
vehicles before 1998. The vehicle manufacture has written a unique fixed
code to the key which the AutoTEC tool needs when coding to the vehicle.
Thankfully the simple solution is to purchase the key already ‘pre-coded’. A
good key supplier such as North West Keys will be able to give advice and
supply to both vehicle and year.
Virtually all vehicles use the modern rolling code system today. They don’t
have the fixed key code issue. As substantial savings can be made with
aftermarket keys, both fixed and crypto types are recommended for use.
GM Vauxhall/Opel
3 Immobiliser system types exist. The first system appeared from 1994 to
1998 and used Philips fixed transponders. The immobiliser is integrated
into the coil around the ignition barrow. Note any engine ECU fault can
cause a problem coding a key on this system. Also refer to note about
aftermarket keys in the “Key + System Types” section. Pin extraction
exists for this system and the first two systems can provide the key cut
code without the ignition on.
The later systems have the immobiliser integrated with the engine ECU.
And use Philips Crypto.
The first two systems have a separate remote system –normally a plastic
black box. Numerous systems exist and some can only be programmed
with a pin code. The latest CAN system programs the remote along with
the key.
Ford
Numerous systems exist from late 1994. Referred to as PATS, or Passive
Anti Theft. No pin code exists, just a time delay of about 10 minutes. A
master key system was used up to 1997. In 2003 a coded access system
appeared called HSPATS, or High Security PATS. We are working to bypass
this system –check for availability.
Aftermarket keys are easy to use for the earlier PATS systems as no fix
code issue exists. Often these earlier key can be identified by the red key
tag which holds the transponder in place but don’t rely on this. We
recommend keeping a few transponders spare without the key –from pre-
1997 and from post 1998 as there are two types. Importantly the vehicle
may need a minimum of two or three keys to start if erasing the key set.
Diesel Galaxy, Diesel VW Sharan (both VW & Ford hybrid), and Fords around
1997 and 1998, must have a minimum of two keys coded or the vehicle will
refuse to start!
Nissan
Numerous systems exist referred to as NATS, or Nissan Anti Theft. Cars to
2000 and pick-ups to approximately 2002 used pre-crypto key and system
called NATS 2. No pin code is required for this system. Problems can
occur if any engine fault code exists or particularly if a fuse has blown on
early vehicles.
Remotes are coded manually without the AutoTEC tool. Refer to Remote
section.
Note Rover 100 and LandRover 1996 used a single button plip which is
coded manually. Rover 75 use a BMW system with a serial bar code which
has to be entered with the AutoTEC tool to code to vehicle.
Honda
Note AutoTEC Coverage from 1999 onwards. A few systems exist. No pin
code required.
Mitsubishi
Easy to code. The 4-digit pin code is per-model based and is provided.
There are a few Mitsubishis which are fitted with different immobilisers and
can only be done by the main-dealer. If you do experience “NO
COMMUNICATIONS” or “INCORRECT PIN CODE”, retry again on another
system BUT don’t attempt a 3rd time. The vehicle may become immobiilsed
for half an hour even with a valid key. Leave the ignition on for half an hour
with the working key to restart the system.
Suzuki
Easy to code system. No pin Code required.
Daewoo
A couple of systems exist. Some Daewoos can not be coded. With an early
Matiz be wary of the type of key used and the fixed code problem with
aftermarket keys. If you experience any problems and can not start the
vehicle with the original –disconnect the battery for 5 minitues to restart
the system.
Some systems have more complex screen instructions but on a whole it’s
pretty straight forward series of instructions. Rover for example informs
the user to press the remote lock button 8 times and the horn will sound.
Simple as that!
The best way to become confident with the tool is to plug into a few Rovers
and other systems. On finding the diagnostic socket, plug the harness
(normally OBD) attached to the AutoTEC into the vehicle. After power up,
select the model / system – ‘.5AS’ for Rover. Push the up and down buttons
to achieve this.
‘Erase Key Set’ and ‘Add Key’ allows the user to simply add a key.
However, if the vehicle was stolen-recovered or the maximum number of
keys the immobiliser can store reached, ‘Erase Key Set’ will remove all
keys from the system. Then add key can be selected to add the first key to
the system. The ‘Program Key Set’ option is more common and combines
erasing the key set with add key. It won’t leave the system without any
keys as the existing keys will only be erased once the new 1st one has been
added. The disadvantage is all keys must be present.
MYTH 1
I can re-use all keys or transponders chips. Some systems actually write
data to the transponder chip so don’t always rely on second hand keys or
transponders –even though we recommend keeping some spare avoid re-
use of Vauxhall/Opel keys from 1998 and Citroen and Peugeot keys from
approximately 2001.
MYTH 2
I can damage the vehicle somehow when coding a key or leave the vehicle
with no keys. The AutoTEC tool is been designed not to electrically
damage the car. It’s impossible to damage or virtually impossible to
immobilise a car unintentionally.
MYTH 3
The AutoTEC will communicate with a vehicle with a broken ECU and
diagnose its fault. No tool in the world can do this
MYTH 4
Can’t get hold of security pin codes. Some main-dealers are more difficult
to deal with than others. Its worth doing the odd job for them to ask for
favors in return. Its not ab`solutely necessary though with the wide range
of vehicles like Rover, Honda, Daewoo, Ford which don’t need codes.
Renault tend to be the worse.
MYTH 5
Key coding is difficult. Like anything in life –things improve with practice.
Getting known helps –its not what you know, its who you know!
FACT
The AutoTEC tool is one of few tools to have built in protection from
vehicle BUS faults or protection from internal faults should it be damaged
somehow.
TIP 1
When purchasing pre-crypto aftermarket keys (pre-1999 normally) make
sure you get the fixed code placed on them. If unsure then ask! Ford
doesn’t have this problem.
TIP 2
Keep some common spare transponder chips. For example, if the Ford your
working on requires two keys but the customer only wants to pay for one.
The transponder chip can be replaced with the space. Especially on
aftermarket keys where it’s deliberately made easy to remove the
embedded transponder chip. Saves money in the long run but refer to top
MYTH above.
TIP 3
Always carry a battery pack around with you. The AutoTEC will inform of a
low battery by a red LED on power up. A battery pack can solve this
problem. Never code a key on low power.
TIP 4
It’s not recommended to work on a damaged vehicle or known to have
serious problems (like missing ECU!). Ensure repairs are carried out first
and then the various possible fault codes read and cleared.
TIP 5
Always wait a minute after switching the ignition on. This gives the
electrical systems around the vehicle time to settle. Otherwise “NO
COMMUNICATION” can occur. New Alfa Romeo’s are known to suffer from
this.
TIP 6
With Rover and early Vauxhalls the system may work better with the
ignition off. If you experience communications problems then leave the
ignition off even when you get the “SWITCH IGNITION ON” prompt.
TIP 7
Use the right keyboard button to quickly jump through the vehicle list.
TIP 8
Don’t enter an incorrect access code more than 3 times. The car will go
into lockout mode. This means you will have to wait up to half an hour
before retrying again. With Mitsubishi the vehicle won’t start for this time.
Leave the ignition switched on for this half hour and will be ok. For
Daewoo momentarily disconnect the battery. Because of the way they
work both a Mitsubishi and Daewoo vehicle may become immobilised even
with an original working key but by carrying out the above solution the
vehicle will be sure to restart.
TIP 9
When coding a key set start with the original working key if exists. That
way it’s more obvious if the subsequent new key is the wrong type. The
first key should be accepted, the second rejected.
TIP 10
Some times the immobiliser kicks in to anti-theft mode after coding a
key(s). Lock and then unlock with working remote to reset the system.
Otherwise you may have to wait 5 or so minutes before being sure the
key(s) have or have not been programmed.
TIP 11
Always leave time for the immobiliser system to settle after an
unsuccessful key coding. This gives the system time to settle and reset
much like the above tip recommends.
4) Screens
Possible operation failed screens are below. Some may be fatal and you
may need to restart the AutoTEC tool or first fix the fault on the vehicle.

1. Incorrect key used. Note if an existing key works and you’re coding
a key set –just try to code this key and see if re-accepted when
coding. This will confirm the new key has a wrong transponder chip.
Instead of replacing the whole cut key, re-order only the transponder
chip to replace the one in the key. This saves money and cutting
another key!
2. Screen instructions not followed.
3. Too slow or fast. Follow the screen instructions at a sensible pace
and have the keys cut and ready beside you.
4. Battery Low
5. Wrong system. Look at component data (if exists) and see if ok, i.e.
Battery voltage etc. ok? Exit and re-try another system as some
times similar systems will communicate with no communications
error.
The older the vehicle, the more likely the latter causes occur. Check and
clean the wiring and maybe plug another diagnostic tool into the vehicle to
see if that has trouble communicating also.
The following section shows immobiliser system and key transponder used.
This can be useful when ordering aftermarket keys. Note the section
should not be used as a coverage guide. For a more accurate guide power
the AutoTEC tool up and browse through the menu.
