    GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a packet oriented mobile data service that was standardized by ETSI in response to i-mode and CDPD. It allows packet switching techniques to transfer data and information on 2G and 3G networks. GPRS supports internet access and multimedia messaging services. It uses protocols like IP, PPP, GTP, and security protocols like PAP, CHAP, and SSL. Implementation requires upgrading both the TDMA network hardware and subscriber handsets. Applications include internet browsing, automotive navigation, virtual radio, fingerprint attendance systems, and device connectivity. EDGE was later standardized as an evolution of GPRS, providing about 3 times the capacity and performance.
