What we are learning
In Reading-The story this week is called Sam and the Bag. The phonics skill is the short a sound. In Writing-We are working on using invented spelling to write anything that they can say. The writer stretches the sounds and writes the letters they hear to form a message. The kids write most mornings in their journals. In addition, we are reviewing handwriting. In Math-We will review some of the math concepts that they learned in kindergarten, then we will launch into first grade math. The new standards dictate that we work on fewer concepts, but we cover them more in depth. We also cover many skills every day when we have a calendar lesson. Help needed! *We will need a parent for each day of the week, on an ongoing basis, to come in at the beginning of the day to have the children read to you. You will then check out new books to them. I already have Mondays and Wednesdays covered. *We could use a push carpet sweeper for our area rug. *Dismissal is at 2:15 each day except for Wednesday which is 1:00. Please be on time picking up your child in the afternoon. Teachers and assistants use after school time for planning and preparing to make our instructional time as effective as can be. After school care is available for a fee.
