project management

Students are encouraged to prepare their draft answer before class, as this will help
them to discuss the questions and answers during the tutorial session.
1. What is a project, and what are its main attributes?
How is a project different from what most people do in their daytoday jobs?
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product,
service or results
In addition to being temporary and unique, other attributes of projects are that
they are developed using progressive elaboration, require resources from
various areas, should have a primary customer or sponsor, and involve
uncertainty.
Projects are different from daytoday activates primarily because they have
focused goals and definite beginning and ending dates. Operation is work
done to sustain the business while projects end when their objectives have
been reached or when the project has been terminated.
2. Describe the relationship among scope, schedule and budget.
IT prokects require resources such as time, money, people and technology.
If the scop of work increases, there are 2 possible scenarios:

Cost increases more people are needed to work on the project
Time increases – the same number of people will take longer to finish the
job
In other words, if the scope increases, the schedule and budget must increase
accordingly.
If the schedule and resources are fixed, the only way to decrease cost and time
is to reduce the project scope.
Scope, schedule and budget must remain in a sort of equilibirum to support the
project goal. This relationship is referred to as the Triple Constraint.
3. In 1995, the Standish Group published an oftenquoted study titled “The
CHAOS Report” or simply “CHAOS”. This prestigious consulting firm
surveyed 365 information technology executive managers in the United States
who managed more than 8,380 information technology application projects.
The Standish Group also did a study in 2001 on why some IT projects succeed
and others fail.
Based on the information found in the report Extreme Chaos 2001, what are the
