CHE 211 SPRING 2012 HW #6 Due: February 24, 2012

1. (30 Points). (a) (15 Points). Using a generalized correlation from the book SVA, determine the compressibility factor Z of water vapor at 250C and 20 atm. (b) (5 Points). How accurate is the value of part (a)?

(c) (10 Points). Show the isotherm of water at 250C, from low pressures to very high pressures (beyond condensation if applicable), using data from tables in your book; report the data in table form, and in a plot. 2. (20 Points). Calculate the enthalpy change H(J/mol) of the following chemical gas-phase reaction at T = 400K.

NOTE :

CH 4 2O 2 CO 2 2H 2 O. (1) Use constant heat capacities first (the values at 298K), for a first approximation. For a second approximation, use only the terms with A and B in the heat capacities Cp(T).
For the above reaction (1).

3.

(50 Points)

(a) (25 Points). Calculate the adiabatic reaction temperature when pure O2 is used. (b) (25 Points). Calculate the adiabatic reaction temperature when air is used, with 4 moles of N2 per mole of O2. NOTE : In both cases assume complete combustion of CH4. In both cases, use constant heat capacities first (the values at 298K), for a first approximation. For a second approximation, use only the terms with A and B in the heat capacities Cp(T).
