Festival Village Marketplace Opening Soon!

Community Association To Establish Neighborhood Representatives

The Board of Directors of Sun City Festival Community Association is soliciting applications from residents interested in being considered for appointments as Neighborhood Representatives. Neighborhood Representatives serve in advisory capacities as liaisons between the Board of Directors and residents of their respective neighborhoods in communicating issues of interest or concern. A total of two residents (a primary and alternate) from each neighborhood will be appointed by the board after being duly elected by majority vote of the homeowners in each neighborhood. The Neighborhood Representatives will form a body to be known as the Neighborhood Representatives Council, and will meet with the Board on a quarterly basis. Interested candidates should submit a letter of intent which acknowledges their interest in serving as a Neighborhood Representative and include any background information they wish to share with the Board to Bruce Friedman, the Community Manager, in the Sage Center. Formal elections and subsequent Board appointments are planned for March/April 2011.

We are pleased to announce that PulteGroup has repurchased the commercial property at the entrance of Sun City Festival and Festival Foothills communities. This purchase has involved a considerable effort by PulteGroup to complete the acquisition from the former owner of the propery , Buckeye AZ LLC. The process has involved the completion of required financial details related to the prior operators lenders, as well as assessing environmental testing and regulatory compliance issues. While PulteGroup now owns the site, they have also been aggressively pursuing an experienced and highly reputable convenience store and gas station operator to provide the oversight and management responsibilities for the facility. We look forward to providing more details on the selected operator once negotiations are finalized. PulteGroup understands the great importance of this commercial site and has dedicated substantial internal and external resources to encourage top commercial providers. As you may know, Pulte did not own the property when the prior tenant left, complicating efforts to solicit a quality tenant. Since June, PulteGroup has been aggressively pursuing repurchase of the property from the owner and other lenders with the help of several commercial property experts. These experts have also helped to identify reputable operators to manage the facility. We hope to have more details to share with residents in the coming weeks about the site, Festival Village Marketplace, and new tenant plans for a convenience store and gas station opening.

Wood Shop and Crafts Studio

Construction continues on the Wood Shop and Crafts Studio. The framing inspections have been completed and the electrical wiring, plumbing, etc. are underway. The Community Association, with much help from the officers of the Chartered Clubs who will be the primary users of the facility have begun fine tuning the equipment and furnishings lists for the building. We currently anticipate a late April 2011 opening of the facility.

Sun City Festival Lending Library Now Open!

Sun City Festivals NEW Lending Library is now open and located in the Sage Centers ASU Lifelong Learning Academy Office. We hope that you will enjoy the facility and the improved book access. The library is maintained on a daily basis by volunteers who sort, label and return books to their proper place. Please come in, browse and select the books of your choice, then return them at your leisure. Returned books as well as donations of either hardback or paperback books may be dropped off at the Member Services Desk.

The Social Dance Club The Social Dance Club members learn and practice various dances in a fun and nonthreatening environment. Couples dance meets Sunday nights from 7-8:30 pm in Celebration Hall. Woodcrafters Club Our club caters to all facets of wood crafting. Learn wood working skills and work on various projects with us! The primary purpose of the Woodcrafters Club is to promote the craft of woodworking as a hobby and assist in the improvement of member skills and abilities. The Heart Of The Matter

With February being American Heart Month, we should all take time to learn a few things about the importance of heart health. The heart is the most important muscle in the body and works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week without any rest. We all have many risk factors for heart disease. Some we cannot control are age, gender and family history. Risk factors we can control are obesity, being sedentary, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Below are some statistics about heart disease: Y An estimated 82.6 million American adults (>1 in 3) have 1 or more types of cardiovascular disease. Of these, 40.4 million are estimated to be 60 years of age. Y Average age of first heart attack is 64.5 years for men and 70.3 years for women. Y One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure. Y In adults, total cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher are considered high risk. Levels from 200 to 239 mg/dL are considered borderline-high risk.) Y Among Americans ages 5564, the following have total blood cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher: 16.0 percent of men 30.5 percent of women Y For ages 6574: 10.9 percent of men 24.2 percent of women Y Among people ages 5564, the following are overweight and obese, defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 25.0 kg/m2 and higher: 79.7 percent of men 69.6 percent of women Y In 2007, cardiovascular disease caused the deaths of 391,886 males, while cancer killed 292,857 males. Y Coronary heart disease is the single major cause of death of American males, killing 216,050 in 2007. This represents 53.2% of deaths from coronary heart disease. Y Since 1984, the number of cardiovascular disease deaths for females has exceeded those for males. Y In 2007, cardiovascular disease was the cause of death in 421,918 females. Females represent 51.8 percent of deaths from cardiovascular disease. To improve cardiovascular health and control heart disease risk factors, follow a low-fat diet and get plenty of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise includes brisk walking, swimming, cycling and running. To maintain current heart health, aerobic exercise should be done three times per week and twenty minutes each time. To improve and maximize heart health, aim for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic exercise most days per week (5-6 days). Aerobic exercise should be done at an intensity in which a breathy conversation can be held. Breathing hard enough to prevent talking is too intense. Easy conversation means effort needs to be increased. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer. The Cooks are enthralled with all of the amenities offered by Sun City Festival...

Karen and Digby Cook

Digby retired from New York Life in 2009. He and his wife of 40 years, Karen, left Anchorage, Alaska in their motor home to explore the Canadian provinces and the lower 48 states. Their travels brought them to Phoenix to visit good friends who lived in Sun City Grand. This visit and their friends strong encouragement to check out the Sun City way of life led them eventually to take a look at Sun City Festival. Digby was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 1964 and was soon transferred to New York City by his U. S. employer to continue his career in corporate finance. Karen, an Oregon Duck and a fine arts graduate from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas accepted an invitation to dance with the Martha Graham Dance Company and arrived in Manhattan in 1969. They met the day she arrived and married a year later in downtown Manhattan. The Cooks were then transferred to Minnesota and then on to Brussels, Belgium where their two children were born. Their daughter lives in Anchorage with her husband and two children, and their son and his Phoenix born wife and their two children just moved to Peoria, Arizona. The Cooks are enthralled with all of the amenities Sun City Festival offers and look forward to increasing their participation as the dust settles from the move and unpacking. They moved into their new house just three months ago and are permanent residents. Digby much prefers shoveling sunshine to snow and they both are delighted with everything that Sun City Festival provides to enhance their retirement.
