Multiplying and Dividing Composite Functions Functions Benchmark- Ch.7.1 Find the product and quotient of functions. Benchmark Ch. 7.1 Find the composition of functions

Type of Lesson: Investigative Objective(s): SWBAT

Benchmark Ch.7.1 Find the Sum and Difference of Functions

Investigative Students will begin planning their final project and presentation in their groups

Evaluate the sum and difference of functions at given values.

Evaluate the product and quotient of functions at given values Graph the product and quotient of functions Teacher will introduce topic with buying a ranch example. Students will be given a description of a plot of land and they are asked to find the dimensions

Evaluate the composition of functions at given values

Graph the sum and difference of functions. Engage Teacher will introduce the unit and the final project. Teacher will stress what the final product is; a presentation about two basketball players, their statistics for a select number of games, and any correlation between the stats. Teacher will create two scenarios with two basketball players point totals to introduce adding functions.

Graph the composition of functions Teacher will introduce the need for composite functions using shopping as a backdrop. Teacher will remind students of the format of the final product (can be a Power point or Poster Board)

Explore

Students will

Students will work on handout with other examples of how to multiply. Handout will introduce dividing functions

Worksheet with the information from the engage. Students will find and evaluate composite functions.

Explain

Teacher will explain to students that they are acting as NBA scouts, presenting information to coaches about certain players. The presentation will be in a group

Teacher will lead discussion on the group work the students did in the explore

Teacher will discuss with Teacher will lead the class their results on discussion on the explore the explore worksheet. work the students did in groups.

Elaborate

Allow work time for the Graphing the sum and students to begin difference of functions planning their project and presentation

Teacher will discuss graphing the product and quotient of functions and compare them to the parent functions.

Teacher will lead the class in discussion on how to graph the composition of functions and how they compare to the original functions. Teacher will collect explore worksheet and handout exit slip with new scenario.

Evaluate

Exit slip question about multiplying functions Given three functions f(x) together and graphing g(x) h(x) the result Exit slip with question: Find f(x) g(x) + h(2)

Week 2
Monday Topic: Finding inverses of functions Tuesday Graphing inverses of functions Wednesday Student Work day Thursday Square roots and inequalities Friday Class Field Trip to the University of Florida, the OConnell center, and practice facility

Type of Lesson: Objective(s): SWBAT

Benchmark- Ch.7.2 Students will be able to identify the independent and dependent variables in a function.

Benchmark- Ch.7.2 Students will be able to graph the original function and the inverse of the function.

Investigative Students will be given time to work on their presentation and projects

Benchmark- Ch.7.3 Graph and analyze square root functions This field trip is supposed to show students that research exists in almost every field, even sports. The use of functions is

Graph Square root inequalities Students will be able to tell if one function is the inverse of another algebraically.

Students will be able to evaluate functions given different values Students will be able to find the inverse of a function. Engage Watch video on Florida basketball team

Three corners

Introduce square root functions by talking about numbers that have a square root ( 64 = 8; 49 = 7; 36 = 6; 25 =

5, etc.)
