LUBRICATION The engine is lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. On KOHLER engines, use Premium Grade gasoline and an approved Snowmobile Oil mixed at a ratio of 40:1. On other engines, use Regular gasoline and Snowmobile Oil mixed at 20:1. A quality Air-Cooled, Two-Stroke Engine Oil can be substituted for Snowmobile Oil; do not use Outboard Motor Oil or Automotive Motor Oil as a substitute except for a short time in extreme emergency. The enclosed chaincase should be lubricated at the end of each use season with low temperature, semifluid pressure gun grease as follows: Remove chaincase cover and gasket and wipe out excess grease using clean towels or rags. Thoroughly wash grease and dirt from chain and sprockets using a suitable solvent and air dry. Recoat chain and sprocket with new grease and place an additional pound of grease in housing and cover; then reinstall cover and gasket.

Rear track idler bearings, drive clutch hub, secondary shaft bearings, ski legs and speedometer cables contain pressure gun fittings on some models. Those points should be lubricated with Lithium type low temperature grease about once a week. Do not overlubricate.

ADJUSTMENT STEERING SKIS. Steering skis should toe in 1/8-V4 inch when handlebar is in a normal straight driving position. Tie rods must be disconnected at one end to change tie rod length. Equalize the adjustment between the two tie rod ends and adjust both tie rods an equal amount. DRIVE CHAIN. To adjust drive chain on Mk I and Mk II units, refer to Fig. 1. Chain tension can be considered satisfactory when backlash measured at driven sheave rim is 3/16-V2 inch. If adjustment is required, loosen adjusting screw (A), clamp screw (B) and the two brake caliper mounting screws (X). Push screw (A) counter-clockwise in slotted hole until backlash is satisfactory, then tighten screws (A and B). Fully apply hand brake lever to realign caliper with pulley rim. then retighten caliper mounting screws (X). On SS Models, refer to Fig. 2. The roller drive chain should have all

measureable slack removed but should not be pre-loaded. To adjust the tension, remove case cover and loosen chain idler clamp screw (A), then turn tensioner screw (B) until tension is correct. Retighten clamp screw (A) and reinstall cover after adding lubricant as required. Chaincase is located on right side of engine compartment. Drive chain adjustment does not affect brake adjustment on these models. BRAKE. On Mk I and Mk II units, the mechanical caliper type brake uses the fixed face of driven sheave as a friction surface. Caliper must properly align, with friction surface and alignment is altered whenever drive chain is adjusted. To properly align caliper unit, refer to Fig. 1. Slightly loosen the two caliper retaining cap screws (X), fully apply the brake; then retighten cap screws (X) with brake applied. Check to see that caliper actuating lever contacts stop pin when operating lever is released and starts to move away from pin when operating lever is depressed. Adjust if necessary at brake cable housing anchor nuts. Brake wear adjustment is made by turning castellated nut on actuating lever stud. SS models use brake disc mounted on cross shaft and a handlebar mounted hydraulic master cylinder. No adjustment is required. Keep master cylinder filled to within Vi-inch of top with automotive type brake fluid.

VEHICLES
On slide rail suspension models only, adjustments are provided for ride and load control; refer to Fig. 6. Tightening upper eyebolt nuts (C) removes weight from skis and increases the percentage of load borne by the track. This results in increased traction at the expense of better steering control with the skis. Tightening lower eyebolt nuts (L) stiffens the suspension and prevents "bottoming" under heavy loads. The nuts should be tightened for heavier loads or loosened for lighter loads. Equal adjustment MUST be made at (C) and (L) for BOTH sides of machine.

TRACK. With rear of machine raised until track is clear, approximately V2-inch of clearance should exist beOVERHAUL tween track and center bogie, or track and center of slide. On all models, track alignment MUST be checked after tension is adjusted, as outlined in TRACK & SUSPENSION Section elsewhere in this manual.
