The document provides information about the Lab-Volt Model 8060 Synchro-Servo Training System, which is a portable educational system used to teach fundamental components of servo systems and electronic circuits.

The main components of the Synchro-Servo Training System are the power supply, potentiometers, error detectors, modulator/demodulator, phase shifter/power amplifier, and signal amplifiers. Each of these modules serves a specific purpose in building and analyzing synchro-servo systems.

Potentiometers are used to inject system control signals. The Potentiometers module contains two independent 1-kΩ potentiometers that have built-in current limiting protection and can manually inject a step input signal.

SYNCHRO-SERVO TRAINING SYSTEM, MODEL 8060

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Lab-Volt Model 8060 Synchro-Servo Training System is a portable, self-contained, educational system. Its modular design allows the student to observe and analyze the fundamental components of the servo system and associated electronic circuits. The Model 8060 allows students to build synchro-servo systems of their own by interconnecting components. This ability increases their working knowledge of components and circuitry, and reinforces their comprehension of block diagrams. The Model 8060 provides a basic understanding of operational theory, as well as the ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and demonstrate open- and closed-loop synchro-servo systems. System interconnections, operating signal states, trouble symptoms, and zeroing errors are easily conveyed and identified through the use of front panel interconnection jacks and stacking leads. The front panels are clearly silk-screened with standard electrical and servo-mechanism symbols, representing each module's function. The Synchro-Servo Training System is primarily an analog positional control device. It operates on low voltages from the power supply, which is built into the system en closure. When the control modules are inserted into the enclosure, they are automatically energized (provided that the main power switch is on). Solid state amplifier modules provide signal amplification, phase shift, and power gain typically required in practical systems. The system enclosure, with built-in back-panel connectors, accepts control modules and synchro-servo modules. Both have fault-insertion capabilities that introduce common system or component malfunctions. The synchro-servo modules can be mechanically coupled to a load by a timing belt. Auxiliary coupling can also be accomplished via a circular section belt.

SYNCHRO-SERVO TRAINING SYSTEM MODEL 8060

Model 8846 Power Supply Model 9037 Error Detectors

The Power Supply, Model 8846, is an integral part of the system enclosure. It features both short circuit and overvoltage protection. Model 9036 Potentiometers

The Error Detectors module, Model 9037, enables the servomechanism systems to have either two feedback loops or two command inputs. It consists of a pair of independent summing amplifiers, each of which has two inverting inputs and one non-inverting input. Model 9038 Modulator / Demodulator

The Potentiometers module, Model 9036, is designed to facilitate the injection of system control signals. It contains two independent 1-k potentiometers, which have built-in current-limiting protection. Each potentiometer wiper is switch-controlled so that a step input can be manually injected.

The Modulator / Demodulator, Model 9038, is designed to interface AC and DC systems. The modulator and demodulator portions are entirely independent of each other, and the output of each section is directly proportional to the signal applied. The modulator section is used for DC to AC conversion while the demodulator section is used for converting AC to DC.

Model 9039 Phase Shifter / Power Amplifier

Model 9047 Capacitor

The Phase Shifter / Power Amplifier, Model 9039, consists of two completely independent sections: the phase shifter portion and the power amplifier. The phase shifter provides the second phase required to create torque in the two-phase AC motor. The power amplifier will operate in either the AC or DC mode, thus providing power for both types of loads. An LED indicator lights up when the power amplifier becomes saturated. Model 9041 Signal Amplifiers

The Capacitor module, Model 9047, is used to increase the torque output of the Synchro Receiver (TR), Model 9316. The torque output of the Receiver decreases when operated at power supply frequencies below its nominal frequency of 400 Hz. The module consists of a 175-F capacitor, to be connected in series with the rotor winding of the Synchro Receiver (TR), and which optimizes torque output at frequencies of 50 and 60 Hz. Model 9313 Synchro Transmitter (TX)

The Signal Amplifiers, Model 9041, is used to control the signal level of each feedback loop. It includes two variable gain amplifiers which are completely independent of each other.

The Synchro Transmitter (TX), Model 9313, is used to provide positioning control of the Model 9316 Synchro Receiver (TR) module. It can also be coupled with the Synchro Differential Transmitter (TDX), Model 9315, thus permitting differential positioning control of the receiver. The transmitter is equipped with an adjustable zeroing feature.

SYNCHRO-SERVO TRAINING SYSTEM MODEL 8060

Model 9314 Synchro Control Transmitter (CX) Model 9316 Synchro Receiver (TR)

The Synchro Control Transmitter (CX), Model 9314, provides positioning control. The control transmitter is equipped with an adjustable zeroing feature. Model 9315 Synchro Differential Transmitter (TDX)

The Synchro Receiver (TR), Model 9316, is used to output the positioning control signals. The module has an adjustable zeroing feature. Model 9318 DC Servo Motor / DC Tacho-Generator

The Synchro Differential Transmitter (TDX), Model 9315, is used to perform the algebraic subtraction of two positioning control signals. This module has an adjustable zeroing feature.

The DC Servo Motor / DC Tacho-Generator, Model 9318, supplies mechanical power to the load. A DC tachometer generates a signal proportional to the speed of the motor.

Model 9319 AC Servo Motor / Asynchronous Tacho-Generator

Model 9320 Inertia/Friction Load

The AC Servo Motor / Asynchronous Tacho-Generator, Model 9319, supplies mechanical power to the load. An AC tachometer generates a signal proportional to the speed of the two-phase motor.

The Inertia/Friction Load, Model 9320, is designed to provide varying loads, common to real-world conditions. Friction is obtained by means of an eddy current brake, while variable inertia is achieved through the use of a flywheel. Accurate positioning of the load is accomplished with a precision potentiometer or a control transformer, which has an adjustable zeroing feature. A shaft encoder gives the relative position of the load, and a spring loaded belt tensioner assures constant tension for repetitive loading.

ADDITIONAL AND OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

The following modules are not covered by Lab-Volt regular courseware but may, at the instructor's discretion, be used to enhance the laboratory program. Model 9040 Tachometer Buffers

The Tachometer Buffers, Model 9040, provides impedance matching between the tachometer output and the rest of the circuit. The 9040 filters unwanted noise superimposed on the tachometer signal. A front panel output jack provides the speed signal for the Speed Sensor / Tachometer (Model 8931, optional).
