We are pleased to announce that the Skinner Fine Wines department will now host three to four wine auctions each year. These added sales will provide a continuum throughout the year for both buying and consigning wine at auction. Online auctions will alternate with live auctions at the Skinner Boston Gallery. Both styles of Skinner wine auctions will offer everything from single bottles for personal enjoyment to high-end investment-grade wines; the online auctions provide convenience and variety, while live auctions will celebrate the best that wine has to offer in focused, high-energy events. This Fine Wines Online auction invites discovery; from large format single bottles to entire cases of first growth Bordeaux, a broad spectrum of fine wines are detailed on the following pages. Horizontal and vertical lots as well as dinner lots crafted to provide a road map for those looking to explore terroir, vintages, and pairings. Napa is well represented by a matrix of vintages and vintners spanning the past several decades. The majority of these wines have been carefully cellared by New England collectors; maturing slowly in excellent storage conditions. Many are being offered at their peak. Being the first brick-and-mortar auction house to present beer live at auction, we expand our offerings as the beer marketplace undergoes a trend that has been called the wine-ification of beer. A market for fine beer worthy of ageing has emerged as public interest in microbreweries, beer bars, and beer tastings keeps on growing. Traditional wine buyers may be delighted reading the descriptions of the first thirty-one lots, detailing processes such as aged in Bordeaux barrels and young lambic aged in barriques. The virtual online catalog at www.skinnerinc.com lays out the entire auction by region and type, starting with Belgian lambic Cantillon 50N-4E and ending with Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Lots 1 to 832 cut a wide swath across the globe. An index of regions is listed opposite this page. A search feature on our website enables you to search for desired wines by keyword: producer, region, bottle, vintage, or bottle size. The online wine auction combines the convenience of an online platform with the confidence that each lot comes from carefully vetted cellars and is backed by expert knowledge. Bidders can participate easily from home, with the understanding that Skinner fine wine specialists are available to answer questions. We hope you enjoy perusing, studying, and bidding on the following lots on offer. Cheers! Marie Keep & Michael Moser

32 Bollinger RD 1996 Ay The 1996 R.D. from Bollinger is another superb wine from this vintage. An expressive bouquet of spices, acacia blossoms and perfumed fruit emerges from the wines silky-textured frame. This generous R.D. is drinking well today, but also has enough freshness to age well for years. It is a great version of one of Champagnes legendary wines. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 96 pts. 04/09 3 bottles (owc in oc) $375-600 33 Cristal 1999 Epernay 1 jeroboam (owc) $1,800-2,400 34 Cristal 2002 Epernay 2 bottles $350-500
44 Krug Brut 1996 Reims The 1996 Krug Vintage remains one of the greatest Champagnes ever made. It is also far less expensive than either the Clos du Mesnil or Clos dAmbonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layers of explosive fruit that ow effortlessly to the multi-dimensional, captivating nish. It is another eternal Champagne from Krug. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 98 pts. 07/11 6 bottles $1,500-2,100 45 Krug Grande Cuvee Reims 6 bottles $500-700 46 Krug Grande Cuvee Brut NV Reims 1 magnum $200-300 47 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 1999 Mareuil-sur-Ay A. 50 Salon Le Mesnil Brut Blanc des Blancs 1997 Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Salons 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancs is drop-dead gorgeous. There is a beautiful tension between the intense minerality of Mesnil and the warmth of the vintage. Textural depth, brilliance and expressive inner perfume are the hallmarks of this gorgeous Blanc de Blancs. Flowers, mint and crisp varietal fruit linger on the impeccable nish. This is a particularly youthful, vibrant disgorgement of the 1997 that can be enjoyed now or cellared. Disgorged First Trimester, 2010. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 95 pts. 12/10 6 bottles (owc) $1,000-1,500 51 Salon Les Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 1996 Le Mesnil sur Oger The 1996 Salon is yet another wine that is maturing splendidly. Once focused to the point of being painfully austere and angular, today the 1996 Salon has begun to soften and ll out. My latest bottles have been rich, generous and totally compelling in every way. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 97+ pts. 11/10 3 bottles $750-1,000 52 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1981 Reims u: into neck, wine stained label R. Parker, 94 pts. 09/10 1 bottle $250-400 53 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1998 Reims The 1998 Comtes de Champagne is a different story altogether. This is a sexy, up-front Comtes endowed with lovely richness in its fruit and open, expressive aromatics. It remains an impressive, inviting Comtes that should also continue to develop nicely in the bottle for at least another decade plus. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 95 pts. 10/10 3 bottles $250-400 54 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Reserve 1985 Reims u: high above foil, lightly bin-soiled label 1 bottle $60-80

55 Chateau Haut Brion 1988 Pessac-Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: 1.0cm or better 4 bottles $1,200-1,600 56 Chateau Haut Brion 1990 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe u: less than 2.0cm 1990: In terms of the brilliant complexity and nobility of the aromatics, scorched earth, black currants, plums, charcoal, cedar, and spices, the 1990 offers an aromatic explosion that is unparalleled. It is always fascinating to taste this wine next to the 1989, which is a monumental effort, but much more backward and denser, without the aromatic complexity of the 1990. The 1990 put on weight after bottling, and is currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even amboyant by Haut Brions standards. It is an incredible expression of a noble terroir in a top vintage. While it has been fully mature for a number of years, it does not reveal any bricking at the edge, and I suspect it will stay at this level for another 10-15 years... but why wait? It is irresistible now. R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/09 3 bottles $1,200-1,800 57 Chateau Haut Brion 2000 Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint of graphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodied Haut-Brion, but one with extraordinary complexity. This wine seems more evolved and approachable than I had expected it to be at age 10. My window of maturity seven years ago was 2012-2040, but I would change that to 2010-2050. R. Parker, 99 pts. 06/10 6 bottles $2,400-3,500 58 Chateau Late Rothschild 1952 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder, scuffed and lightly torn label, Etablissments Nicolas stamped label 1 bottle $700-1,000
59 Chateau Late Rothschild 1955 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: low shoulder, nicked capsule, stained, nicked and bin-soiled label 1 bottle $200-300 60 Chateau Late Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder, very lightly corroded capsule 1 bottle $1,800-2,400 61 Chateau Late Rothschild 1986 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: into neck The 1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Late has immense potential. Patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 20002030. Last tasted 11/94. R. Parker, 100 pts. 01/98 1 bottle $800-1,200
62 Chateau Late Rothschild 1996 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Late-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estates greatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the nal blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Late I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the rst Late-Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, owers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Late is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years. R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/99 7 bottles $5,000-7,000 63 Chateau Late Rothschild 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe R. Parker, 98+ pts. 06/10 10 bottles $12,000-18,000 64 Chateau Late Rothschild 2001 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe 1 magnum $1000-1500 65 Chateau Latour 1947 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: mid shoulder, lightly corroded capsule, slight signs of old seepage, tissue and water stained label, binsoiled label 1 bottle $600-900
66 Chateau Latour 1966 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: top shoulder, slight signs of old seepage 1 demi bottle $200-300 67 Chateau Latour 1972 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one very top shoulder, two top shoulder, oxidized capsules, lightly binsoiled labels 3 bottles $400-600 68 Chateau Latour 1990 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: into neck, lightly scuffed label L. Perrotti-Brown for R. Parker, 94 pts. 11/12 1 bottle $500-700 69 Chateau Margaux 1982 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder, light oxidation and capsule wear, slight nick to label, light bin soil and label staining Consistently scoring between 98100, the superb 1982 Margaux may be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintages produced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis and oral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a Chateau Margaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/09 1 bottle $500-700 70 Chateau Margaux 1983 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: two very top shoulder, one top shoulder, nicked capsule, lightly corroded capsules R. Parker, 96 pts. 01/03 3 bottles $900-1,400 71 Chateau Margaux 1986 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: one bottom neck, one very top shoulder, one top shoulder; light capsule corrosion and bin soil 3 bottles $1,000-1,400
72 Chateau Margaux 1989 Margaux, 1er Cru Classe u: bottom neck, very lightly scuffed label 1 bottle $300-450 73 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: bottom neck, some label loss and staining R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/09 1 bottle $800-1,200 74 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one high shoulder, three top shoulder, four very top shoulder or better, capsule corrosion, bin scuffs and nicking to all labels, one label mostly missing, three labels partially unafxed and torn, wine staining to all, bin soil R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/09 8 bottles $4,250-6,000 75 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: one into neck, three bottom neck, six very top shoulder, one top shoulder, one high shoulder, six with signs of old seepage, three wine stained labels, nicked labels, wrinkled labels R. Parker, 100 pts. 06/09 12 bottles (owc) $9,000-12,000 76 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1985 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder, one very slightly protruding cork 3 bottles $750-1,000 77 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1989 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: bottom neck 1 bottle $250-350 78 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1990 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: very top shoulder 1 bottle $250-400
79 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1990 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe u: ve into neck, one bottom neck 6 bottles $1,400-2,000 80 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe R. Parker, 96+ pts. 06/10 6 bottles $6,000-9,000
Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 1995 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe 3 bottles $300-450 86 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 1996 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe 2 bottles $250-400 87 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2005 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring owers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Fullbodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. It may be the nest wine produced at this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. R. Parker, 97 pts. 04/08 1 bottle $125-200 88 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2008 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe One of the stars of the vintage, and a remarkable achievement in 2008, with impressive richness, this dense purple colored wine is almost as opaque as the 2010. Spring owers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis and some subtle oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine that transcends the vintage character in its power, richness, and aging potential. It also exhibits tremendous precision, purity, and depth of character. It is more forward than the 2010 is likely to be, but probably not as sumptuous as the 2009 will turn out to be. This is a wine to buy. R. Parker, 95+ pts. 05/11 12 bottles (owc) $800-1,200 89 Chateau Gruaud Larose 1982 St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe u: bottom neck, badly nicked label, lightly bin-soiled label R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/09 1 bottle $250-400 90

Atop a hillside, Chateau Cos dEstournel is a beacon of St. Estephe. The exoticism of Asia, from the Taj style of its architectural pagodas to the elephants anking the Chateaus wine archive hints at the perfume of its wines. Cos was in the vanguard of the continuing Bordeaux modernization of cellar design and vinicultural methods, using a gravity driven process to allow Cos terroir to unfold, drawing out its signature heady exotic spice, in wines of incredible nesse and supple balance. A soaring bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, graphite and spring owers is followed by a super-concentrated wine with silky tannins, stunning amounts of glycerin, a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeel and nearly 14% natural alcohol. Displaying fabulous denition for such a big, plump, massive, concentrated effort, I suspect the tannin levels are high even though they are largely concealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. R. Parker, 100 pts. 02/12 12 bottles (owc) $2,200-3,250
Montrose is a majestic estate. Further up the Gironde, St. Estephe being just past Pauillac, visitors seem fewer up here. One gets the sense that perhaps being undisturbed, the team diligently pursues their mission without interruption PhM
101 Chateau Montrose 2009 St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe A colossal effort, the 2009 Montrose represents a hypothetical blend of the monumental duo of 1989 and 1990 combined with the phenomenal 2003. With 13.7% alcohol (an all-time high at Montrose), it is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Some structure and minerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massive blackberry, black currant and mulberry fruit intermixed with forest oor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring owers. Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin, Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is the greatest wine he has made during his short tenure at Montrose since retiring from Haut-Brion. This wine will undoubtedly shut down for a decade, then unleash its power, glory and potential perfection. R. Leoville Las Cases (LLC) is a St. Julien in name onlynot that there is anything wrong with that. This wine is generally quite well-endowed and possessing dramatic depth. LLC is quite a large property on the river side of the northsouth road from the city of Bordeaux. Leoville Barton and Leoville Poyferre were cleaved off at various times in history further validation that this is a most special site (terroir in French). PhM

La Mission lies just across the road from Haut Brion. The descendants of American banker Clarence Dillon now run both properties (previously owning just Haut Brion). Given this fact, there exists an inevitable xation to contrast the properties. Still, the arrangement between them is not really one of sibling rivalry at all. What is striking is how these wine estates and adjacent vineyards exist so close to the city center of Bordeaux (4 miles). Mercifully the unusually deep gravel soils so ideal for viticulture were never paved over! PhM

108 Chateau Malescot Saint Exupery 2009 Margaux, 3eme Cru Classe An inky/purple color is followed by notes of Asian plum sauce, forest oor, creme de cassis, black raspberries and a oral component that is unusual for a Margaux. A wine of exceptional intensity and purity with a full-bodied, sumptuous texture, lots of fresh vibrancy and excellent denition, this beautiful 2009 exhibits high but sweet tannin. It is more sexy than the 2005 was at a similar age, although their level of extract and concentration is relatively equal. Something about the 2009 reminds me of a Margaux version of St.-Juliens Leoville Poyferre...if that makes any sense. R. Parker, 96 pts. 02/12 12 bottles (owc) $800-1,200

120 Chateau Lynch Bages 2000 Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe Beginning to open magnicently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Fullbodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years. R. According to the chateau, the 2009 has the highest level of polyphenols ever measured as well as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest largely Merlot with touches of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is an expressive, voluptuously textured effort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and black currant avors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense of heaviness or fatigue. This exquisite Lynch Bages should drink well for 30+ years. R. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laserlike precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more. R. Chateau Cheval Blanc doesnt scream out for attention, rather it is passionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionably worthy of First Growth stature. PetrusIn the renowned village of Pomerol, pack-leader Chateau Petrus is unassumingly modest. Close by the road, lacking some formal alley, it is easy to overlook when contrasted with some architecturally grander neighbors. The robins-egg-blue shutters against the limestone creates a hushed and dignied exterior to the chai. Of course the hedonistic treasures crafted within are anything but reserved On average, only about 4,000 cases are made each vintage. PhM

This wine also possesses lots of elegance and nesse. The wines medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with gorgeously refreshing acidity as well as massive concentration and unctuosity. Everything is uplifted and given laserlike focus by refreshing acidity. Burghound, 94 pts. 01/11 2 bottles $500-800 212 Dujac Bonnes Mares 2009 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A remarkably fresh and expressive nose displays high-toned red berry fruit, earth and mineral aromas that give way to rm, serious and equally mineral-driven big-bodied avors that offer excellent verve on the well-muscled and especially structured nish that seems to go on without end. This positively dazzling effort is not quite old school in basic character though it knocks on the door of it and like several of these grands crus, will need 15 to 20+ years to reach its full prime. A wow and potentially one of the greatest vintages ever for the Dujac Bonnes Mares, which is saying something given this wines superb track record. Burghound, 96 pts. 01/12 1 bottle $400-600
213 Dujac Clos de la Roche 2005 Cote De Nuits Tasting note: Sweet black cherry fruit, warm earth, spice and a hint of the sauvage leads to focused, intense, vibrant and well-muscled full-bodied avors that carry ample authority and punch on the complex, broad and superbly long nish. There is real depth of material here and the intensity builds from the mid-palate on back to the explosive if slightly austere nish. There is so much dry extract here that this is a dramatic and powerful wine. A stunner with simply amazing persistence. Burghound, 95 pts. 01/08 2 bottles $800-1,200 214 Dujac Clos de la Roche 2006 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: Here there is terric aromatic depth with a gorgeous mix of red and dark berry fruit, spice, earth, game, underbrush and a subtle minerality that can also be found on the rich, full, sweet and intense bigbodied avors brimming with buckets of dry extract on the mouth coating, long, powerful and utterly stunning nish. This is a big 2006 yet the focus, balance and sense of harmony are riveting. Burghound, 93 pts. 01/09 2 bottles $400-600 215 Dujac Gevrey Chambertin Aux Combottes 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A wonderfully expressive and high-toned nose of cool red berry fruits and hints of spice, earth and minerals serve to introduce sweet and impeccably well-balanced avors that are sweet, delicious, rich, detailed and altogether serious, packing good punch and energy into a nish that is all grace and harmony. This is a really lovely effort that will age well yet be accessible early on. Burghound, (9193) pts. 01/07 2 bottles $250-400
216 Dujac Romanee St. Vivant 2008 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: An ultra elegant nose of pure red currant, violets and an impressive array of beguiling spices leads to equally pure, intense and lightly mineral suffused middle weight avors that possess a velvety and delicate mouth feel, all wrapped in a seductive, seriously long and palate staining nish. This is already quite good but in time it should be spectacular. Burghound, 95 pts. 01/11 1 bottle $500-700 217 Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze 2006 Cote de Nuits Burghound, (95-97) pts. 01/07 6 bottles (owc) $600-900 218 Faiveley Mazis Chambertin 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: An interesting if slightly odd nose of reduction and menthol notes added to wild, ripe and layered red berry fruit aromas that complement the gamy and completely backward avors that are highly complex and possess a rm and mouth coating texture. This isnt necessarily a wine of nesse or elegance but there is character to burn and as usual, I quite like this. In a word, stunning. Burghound, (93-95) pts. 01/07 12 demi bottles (owc) $600-900 219 Forey Pere et Fils Echezeaux 2002 Cote de Nuits 3 bottles $275-375 220 Domaine Fourrier GevreyChambertin Vieille Vigne 2010 (1 bt) 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 2010 (1 bt) 2 bottles $350-550 221 Vincent Girardin Grands Echezeaux 2000 Cote de Nuits 1 bottle $100-150

This is almost as serious as the Clos de Vougeot and will likely require just as much patience for it to arrive at its majority. This is a rst class knockout. Burghound, 94 pts. 01/08 2 bottles $350-500 225 R. Grofer Bonnes Mares 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: I was frankly shocked to nd that the aromatic prole here was even more elegant and arguably ner than that of the Amoureuses with its bright red and blue pinot fruit, minerals and spice notes, particularly anise that complement to perfection the sleek, taut, brooding and focused avors that explode on the hugely long and deep nish. This is an impressive wine that has that wow factor. Burghound, (92-94) pts. 01/07 1 bottle $200-300
226 Hudelot-Noellat Clos Vougeot 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A moderately oaked nose of red and black pinot fruit nuanced by ample earth and sauvage notes that continue onto the notably sweet, full and concentrated avors supported by rm and dusty tannin on the youthfully austere nish. This is a classically styled and quite ripe Clos de Vougeot with excellent dry extract levels. Burghound, (91-94) pts. 01/07 3 bottles $400-600 227 Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A deep and brooding nose of subtle wood spice, Asian spice and ripe black pinot and plum aromas merges into big, robust and powerful avors that are at once silky yet punchy with even more dry extract than the RSV and, at least today, even more nishing persistence. This is well muscled but taut and rened, like a world class gymnast. One to buy and forget if you can as this wine will make you very popular amongst your friends! Burghound, (94-96) pts. 01/07 3 bottles $1,500-2,000 228 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles St. Jacques 2002 Cote de Nuits 3 bottles $200-300 229 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 2009 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: There is lovely ripeness and a clear sense of renement to the ripe yet cool red berry liqueur and stone aromas. The delicious and mineral-inected medium weight avors display ample verve and good mid-palate density that mostly buffers the rm but well-integrated tannic spine, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent and ever-so-mildly austere nish. This should be a classic Clos St. Jacques with 12 to 15 years of bottle age though have the advantage of being accessible after only 6 to 8 years, which is unusual for this wine. 237 JF Mugnier Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses 1988 Cote de Nuits u: 2.5cm Tasting note: An elegant if restrained nose that is now fully mature and redolent of the hallmark spice and dried rose petal aromas of a ne Amoureuses leads to rich, round and velvety medium-full avors supported by still rm but well-integrated tannins and outstanding length. This is a lovely wine that has reached its peak but one that will hold for another several decades if well-stored and unlike some 88s today, there is no excess of tannins. Impressive. Burghound, 91 pts. 07/07 1 bottle $200-300 238 JF Mugnier Musigny 1999 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: (opened from personal storage; also with thanks to Geddy Lee). A highly expressive, indeed even explosive nose offers up wonderfully pure spice and menthol-infused black cherry fruit aromas that complement elegant, sexy and beautifully rened medium-weight avors that are underpinned by velvet wrapped tannins and stunning persistence. Though this is not what I would call a dense wine, it has a nish that lasts for minutes and exudes energy and vibrancy plus the impeccable balance should permit the 99 Musigny to drink well for a long, long time. A terric wine that clearly is still on its way up so assuming that you have well-stored bottles, there should be no concern about missing the prime drinking window. All of that said, this could be enjoyed now with 30 minutes or so of air and the right food. I have multiple, and consistent, notes. Burghound, 95 pts. 10/12 1 bottle $700-1,000
239 JF Mugnier Nuits Saint Georges Clos de la Marechale 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: In contrast to the expressiveness of the rst two 05s, here there is a completely different aromatic prole and one that is brooding with more deeply pitched and quite ripe blue and violet aromas combining with pungent earth and game hints that continue onto the sweet, rich and sappy avors wrapped around a rm tannic spine. This is impressive as it is clearly Nuits in character yet with rened and sophisticated structural elements. Also recommended. Burghound, 92 pts. 01/08 1 magnum $125-200 240 Perrot-Minot Chambolle Musigny Combe dOrveau 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A beautiful mix of spicy red and black pinot fruit aromas trimmed in a deft touch of oak introduces extremely rich and fullbodied avors that offer a beguiling sweetness on the textured and mouth coating nish that is complex, rened and intense. This is a really pretty wine that reminds me more than a little of a more modestly-scaled Musigny as its both opulent and silky. Burghound, 92 pts. 01/08 2 bottles $400-600 241 Perrot-Minot Mazoyeres Chambertin 2002 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: Strong reduction effectively conceals the nose. As is often the case, this is less elegant than the Charmes but its a bigger, richer, more powerful wine of terric intensity, in fact this is breathtaking in its power and intensity. A very masculine wine that offers a very spicy nish. A choice of expressions. Roumier Bonnes Mares 1996 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: Christophe Roumier fashioned some seriously impressive 96s and this has nally begun to open on the spicy, pure, airy and elegant nose while displaying really lovely aromatic complexity that continues on the relatively round sappy and sweet avors that unlike many 96s, possesses excellent acid/fruit/tannin balance on the gorgeously persistent nish. While one can discern some initial development, this is still a baby and will denitely be a long-distance runner so if you own it, additional patience is denitely required. The extremely pure and utterly delicious nish is shaped by the dense but ne tannins that are given added energy by the perfectly integrated acid spine. This is a seriously lovely effort. 260 Comte de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2002 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: Brilliant ruby. Expansive and very open on the nose with a fantastic array of spices, owers and fruit aromas leading to very serious, exuberantly fresh and impressively deep avors that also have a wonderfully tactile texture to them. But as it usually is, its not the raw power that impresses but rather the incredible combination of mind boggling complexity coupled with perfect balance and this just dances across the palate yet stains it with notably ripe pinot extract. The nish is all silk and velvet but with a deeply buried, very rm and chewy backbone of tannins that lasts for minutes. This is greatness in the making. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. Burghound, 96 pts. 03/07 2 bottles $1,000-1,400 261 Comte de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2008 Cote de Nuits This is also quite reserved at present with an elegant, airy, cool and pure nose that is kaleidoscopically complex as it offers red currant, plum, black cherry and a panoply of oral and spice notes, in particular violet and anise, before marrying seamlessly into mineral-driven and alluring bigbodied avors that explode on the powerful and almost painfully intense nish that delivers genuinely stunning length. I love the way Musigny can so effortlessly combine a silky palate impression with serious muscle. This should be quite impressive in time though note that it will need a minimum of 18 to 25 years of cellar time. Burghound, 96 pts. 01/11 6 bottles $2,000-3,000
262 Domaine de la Vougeraie Bonnes Mares 2005 Cote de Nuits Tasting note: A brooding and very reserved yet impressively elegant and rened nose featuring very fresh notes of red, blue and violet aromas introduces big-boned, rich and distinctly robust and sleekly muscled avors that do a slow build from the mid-palate to an explosive nish. This has huge underlying reserves and while this is very rmly structured, the tannic spine is well buffered. I very much like this as its fashioned in a classic Bonnes Mares vin de garde style that will last for 30 years or more. A great effort. Burghound, (92-95) pts. 01/07 6 bottles $700-1,000

291 Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac 2005 Southern Rhone The blockbuster 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac shows classic garrigue notes intermixed with ground pepper, lavender, and sweet black currant and black cherry notes with hints of raspberry and olive. The wine is full-bodied has a boatload of tannin, fabulous concentration, and a nish of close to 50 seconds. This is a brilliant Barbe Rac that should be at its best between 2010 and 2025. R. Still beautifully put together and aging gracefully, with a core of sweet fruit, it is certainly drinking well now, yet should continue to hold and drink nicely through 2020. Jeb Dunnuck for R. Stylistically, it probably comes closest to resembling the legendary 1990. Notes of roasted meats and smoked duck, with Provencal herbs, trufe, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all there, plus enormous quantities of red and black fruits. This is one heck of a complex wine, with a bouquet that is the essence of southern France, in particular Provence. Full-bodied, powerful, with the glycerin and level of richness covering some lofty tannins, this wine is already accessible and nearly impossible to resist, but my instincts suggest it will be absolutely glorious in another 4-5 years and keep for 15-20. It represents an awesome naked/ virginal expression of Grenache from three vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tasting this wine on ve separate occasions, I can state with certainty, it has the most saturated color of any Mon Aieul produced to date. Moreover, its perfume of blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, licorice, roasted meat juices, and lavender is incredible. Full-bodied power, a multilayered mouthfeel, tremendous purity, and awesome concentration put this wine in a class by itself. This sensational Chateauneuf du Pape is still very young, and 3-4 years of cellaring is required. It should be a modern day legend and last for nearly two decades. R. 307 Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 1998 Piedmonte The 1998 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a monumental effort. A deep dark red, it opens with a huge nose of licorice, roses and cocoa, then ows onto the palate with masses of sweet, concentrated dark fruit that go on forever. Notes of mineral and leather gradually develop in the glass, adding further complexity as this great wine begins to reveal its expansive and profound personality. The 1998 is unusually open right now. As was the case with the 1997 at this stage, it should offer a brief drinking window over the next 6 months or so before shutting down for what is likely to be an extended period prior to awakening in the glorious prime of its life. Internationally renowned sweet wine producer Alois Kracher produced just 320 of these boxed, 13-bottle collections which include a demi bottle of each of their numbered wines. Each wine receives individual treatment: a single variety produced either in the traditional method (labeled Zwischen den Seen and aged in large oak vats) or in the bold style of the late Alois Kracher, Jr. (labeled Nouvelle Vague and aged in new oak barriques), with the exception of No. 10, the Grande Cuvee of the vintage which is a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Welschriesling treated in the Nouvelle Vague style. Yields are kept absurdly low with each vine limited to just three bunches of botrytis-ravaged grapes, sulfur levels are kept in check and acidity is maximized by eschewing malolactic fermentation. These pure expressions of terroir and technique are among the nest dessert wines crafted 306 Kracher Collection #1 - #13 1998 Austria 13 demi bottles (owc) $700-1,000

332 Sassicaia 2006 Tuscany The 2006 Sassicaia may very well go down as one of the all-time great recent vintages for this Tuscan thoroughbred. The year started off very warm but by August evening temperatures had moderated, leaving the fruit with a stunning combination of ripeness, perfume, acidity and tannin. The wine is simply glorious, thats all there is to it. Layers of dark fruit meld into smoke, leather, violets, menthol, earthiness and tar as this profound wine opens up in the glass. The creamy, silky nish lasts an eternity, as waves of fruit caress the tannins with breathtaking elegance. Everything is in the right place in this magical Sassicaia. This is one for the ages. The 1996 Unico has a very pure, pastille-like bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry, crushed stone and a touch of Chinese tea. It has impressive delineation and linearity. The palate is medium-bodied with ligree tannins. The fruit prole is shimmering in the glass with black cherries, cassis and blueberry notes. It is very feminine and powerful towards the poised, tensile nish that is long and seductive. One of the nest recent vintages, suffused with sensuality and opulence, the 1996 Unico is destined to be a great wine, one that might unfairly be over-shadowed by the 1994. N. Martin for R. I would not disagree one bit. At 11 years young, it remains beautifully dened and fresh on the nose, with vibrant red berry fruit, slate and a hint of brine. The palate is medium-bodied with a wonderful entry: blackberry, black pepper, a touch of cumin and sea salt. It is blessed with outstanding denition and precision, with a gentle grip on the nish and dried blood on the aftertaste. This is a profound Priorat that has barely started to show what it can do! N. 364 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard 1995 Napa one lightly nicked capsule I believe the 1995 is the nest produced under the Araujo regime. It is close to perfection. The wine combines extraordinary power and richness with remarkable complexity and nesse. The saturated purple/ black color is followed by aromas of sweet vanillin intermixed with riveting scents of black currants, minerals, exotic spices, coffee, and toast. There is nothing garish about this subtle yet powerful giant of a wine. A Napa Valley classic, it is full-bodied and extremely rich, yet retains its sense of balance and symmetry. A wine of great intensity, exceptional power, and admirable grace as well as equilibrium, this full-bodied 2006 offers beautifully sweet creme de cassis, licorice, spice box, and toasty oak characteristics. 407 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2001 Napa Caymus has been around for so long there is a tendency to underestimate their wines. However, they have a brilliant track record as evidenced by the decade old 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection. Abundant chocolaty, black currant, licorice and coffee aromas soar from the glass of this perfumed wine. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, wonderful opulence, a deep, fullbodied mouthfeel, fabulous depth and not a hard edge to be found. On the hillside of Oakville is the lovely and humble estate of Dalla Valle. Up at this quiet aspect one feels a world away from self-referential wine trends as the focus here is so clearly on the grapes on the vine. Naoko Dalla Valle has held the reins for the past 18 years and continues to produce glorious single varietal and proprietary red wines. MK

441 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1995 Napa chipped wax capsules The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is similar in all respects to the Napa Valley, but somewhat heavier in the mouth, with an aggressive tannic bite, and more length. It possesses mineral-tinged blackberry and cassis fruit, massive body, and extraordinary purity and length. It should not be touched for 12-15 years. It will undoubtedly live through the rst half of the next century. R. Parker, 96 pts. 12/98 6 bottles $350-550 442 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1996 Napa wine stained labels R. The wine is super-pure and super-rich, an extraordinarily full-bodied powerhouse of a Cabernet Sauvignon that should evolve for 15 or more years. It possesses extraordinary concentration, intensity, purity, and ripeness, yet retains an elegant style. With a spectacular perfume of blackberry liqueur, cassis, acacia owers, graphite, espresso roast, and chocolate as well as a 60-second nish, this long, dense 2001 is still primary, but already fun to drink. 472 Harlan Estate 1994 Napa 1 bottle $700-1,100 473 Harlan Estate 1994 Napa What can I say about the 1994? I have tasted the wine for three consecutive years, and each time it satised all of my requirements for perfection. The opaque purple color is followed by spectacular aromatics that soar from the glass, offering up celestial levels of black currants, minerals, smoked herbs, cedar wood, coffee, and pain grille. In the mouth, this seamless legend reveals full body, and exquisite layers of phenomenally pure and rich fruit, followed by a 40+ second nish. While accessible, the 1994 begs for another 5-7 years of cellaring. It should easily last for 30+ years. Every possible jagged edge - acidity, alcohol, tannin, and wood - is brilliantly intertwined in what seems like a diaphanous format. What is so extraordinary about this large-scaled wine, with its dazzling display of aromatics and prodigious avors and depth, is that it offers no hint of heaviness or coarseness. Harlans 1994 comes close to immortality in the glass. R. Parker, 100 pts. 12/97 2 bottles $1,500-2,000 474 Harlan Estate 1998 Napa R. 477 Harlan Estate 2004 Napa Very deep garnet-black colour with a purple rim. Though still very youthful and muted, this vintage is already subtly revealing a wide array of aromas including blackberry tart, cedar, violets, trufes, liquorice and all spice. In the mouth however this is no shrinking violet the 04 is a big, concentrated and highly structured wine with somewhat impenetrable, tightly grained tannins and medium to high acid supporting its rich weight. Very, very long nish displaying hints of savoury earthiness and that signature minerality that appears to surface in better years. L. Perrotti-Brown for R. Parker, 98 pts. 01/09 1 magnum $750-950 478 Harlan Estate 2005 Napa Not unexpectedly, the 2005 Harlan Estate performed slightly better than it did last year. As these wines often do, it continues to put on weight as it is bottled very late by Napa standards, and there is no ning or ltration. The 2005 exhibits a gorgeous thicklooking, ruby/purple color in addition to a beautiful nose of burning embers interwoven with creme de cassis, roasted meats, sweet black trufes, and spring owers. A hint of lead pencil shavings also emerges from this cuvee, which seems to want to be both a Pauillac and a ripe vintage of La Mission Haut Brion. Full-bodied, dense, pure, and revealing sweeter tannin than I remember, it can be drunk now, but it will no doubt display even greater complexity in 10, 20, and 30 years. R. Parker, 97 pts. 12/08 6 bottles $2,100-3,000 479 Harlan Estate 1990 (1 bt) 1991 (1 bt) 1992 (1 bt) 1993 (1 bt) 1994 (1 bt) 1995 (1 bt) Napa 6 bottles (owc) $2,400-3,250 480 Harlan Estate The Maiden 1996 Napa 2 bottles $150-250
The thrill of entering the gates of Harlan quickly transmutes into quiet awe of its beauty. Every single detail of the estate is purposeful and rened. The wines are a glorious composition of similar but more extroverted qualities - high among them, harnessed power and elegance. MK
471 Harlan Estate 1993 Napa The 1993 should be as prodigious as the 1992. It is an opaque purplecolored wine with spectacular ripeness, purity, and potential. Dense, full-bodied, with a chocolatey, toasty, mineral, and blackcurrant-scented nose, this wine has a rich, full-bodied, chewy texture nicely buttressed by ripe tannin. In addition, the wine reveals more noticeable tannin in the nish, particularly when it is compared to the 1992 or 1994. This is another 20-25 year wine. R. Parker, 95 pts. 12/96 2 bottles $550-750

481 Harlan The Maiden 2005 Napa Harlans second wine, The Maiden, is marvelous in 2005. Ripe, opulent fruit and notes of unsmoked high class cigar tobacco intermixed with creme de cassis, coffee, and asphalt are present in this round, superbly textured, rich, full-bodied, silky, beautifully wrought wine. It possesses terric underlying acidity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a youthfulness and freshness that suggest this wine has two decades of life ahead of it. This majestic Chardonnay seems more French than Californian, but again, this reects the signicance of the labor of these two overachieving, push-theenvelope visionaries. What California viticulture and high-class, minimalist winemaking can achieve is exhibited in bold fashion by this 2007. It will hit its prime in 5-7 years, and appears to be a replay of the 2002 stylistically as well as for its overall potential. R. A wine of extraordinary sublimity, intensity, authority and palate presence, it offers wonderfully ripe (but not overripe) blue and red fruits intermixed with notions of forest oor, spring owers, camphor, plum sauce and a smoky character that I identify with Peking duck. The wine possesses staggering intensity and richness but it is neither heavy nor overbearing. This is an exquisite Pinot Noir the likes of which Marcassin has never before made. It should continue to evolve for two decades. R. Parker, 99+ pts. 02/11 3 bottles $750-1,200

595 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 1994 (1 bt) nicked capsule 1998 (5 bts) Napa 1994 Tasting Notes: The proprietary red wine made by Pahlmeyer is usually a blend of 75%-80% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a tiny quantity of Malbec. The 1994 Proprietary Red Wine exhibits a purple/black color, as well as sweet, integrated tannin, a gorgeous blackcurrant, toast, tar, and licorice-scented nose, fabulous texture, and a 35-45 second nish. The 1994 may be slightly sweeter in the mid-palate than the 1995, but the differences are negligible. The abundant tannin is mostly concealed by the wines wealth of fruit, glycerin, and alcohol. This wine should drink well from the late nineties through the rst two decades of the next century. Very impressive! R. Parker, 96 pts. 12/96 6 bottles $425-600 596 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 1997 Napa The nest proprietary red produced by Pahlmeyer to date is their 1997 (a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the rest PetitVerdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec). Production is 3,300 cases, and the wine tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. A super-rich, blockbuster effort, it exhibits an opaque purple color in addition to a fabulous bouquet of black fruits, espresso, cocoa, mocha, and owers. A prodigious red, with low acidity, spectacular concentration, and fabulous purity as well as overall symmetry, it can be drunk now, but promises to last for 20-25 years. R. 606 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1995 Napa 4 bottles $500-800 607 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1997 Napa one capsule cut at top While only microscopic quantities were produced of this wine, It is an immense wine of extraordinary concentration and depth. Amazing, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve pushes richness to unreal levels. Despite its intense, full-bodied, ultra-concentrated style, it possesses a sense of balance and denition. The color is a saturated inky purple. The aromatics consist of lead pencil shavings, minerals, blackberries, cassis, and owers. Extremely full-bodied, with amazing purity, mouth-coating richness, sweet tannin, and low acidity, it offers profound drinking even though it has not yet begun to develop secondary nuances. R. 618 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2003 (9 bts) Reserve Claret 2003 (3 bts) R. Parker, 97 pts. 06/13 Napa Note on Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve: In contrast, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (14.7% natural alcohol) is an equal part blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. There is no doubting the Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine! Classic notes of cedarwood, underbrush, licorice, black currants and tobacco leaf are textbook denitions of this varietal. The color is even denser than the Reserve Clarets, and the bouquet offers additional notes of Chinese black tea. Elegant with great acid as well as stunning concentration, richness and a full-bodied mouthfeel, this is another world-class effort that pushes the envelope toward perfection. It is a remarkable success for the vintage, partly due to the fact that the extremes of weather experienced on the valley oor were less problematic for these high altitude sites. R. It offers a dense purple color, an extraordinary bouquet of spring owers, blueberries, creme de cassis, black fruits, and a hint of oak. It also has an unctuous texture. As with all rich wines, the oak component plays a complementary role in the wines nuances. A seamless integration of acidity, wood, tannin, and alcohol is found in this rich, elegant, pure, dense beauty. There is a certain accessibility to the 2005 that is unusual by Monte Bellos standards, and it will age effortlessly for 25+a years. R. Screaming Eagle could only be a California story.Over the span of a decade a tiny winery progresses from inception to becoming one of the most valuable and coveted bottles in the world.Gorgeously lush and hedonistic, the miniscule production adds to the wines tantalizing allure.Screaming Eagle represents the founders unrelenting belief that the estates soils are distinct from the rest of the Napa Valley. This opaque purple-colored wine exhibits a sensational purity of black currant fruit, intermixed with a notion of raspberries, violets, and welldisguised sweet vanillin. Full-bodied, with remarkable intensity, exquisite symmetry, and a mid-palate and nish to die for, this is a compelling, astonishingly seductive Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk now, or cellared for 20-25 years. I may have done this wine a disservice by not giving it the big 3-digit score. R. Parker, 99 pts. 12/98 1 bottle $1,500-2,000

Representing the essence of cassis liqueur intermixed with blackberries, minerals, licorice, and toast, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional classic is fabulous, with extraordinary purity, symmetry, and a nish that lasts for nearly a minute. 641 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Napa The last time I had this wine, it seemed much more developed, youthful and approachable. This particular bottle, which was pulled from my cellar, was super-powerful, dense and concentrated, as well as structured and backward. Aeration helped somewhat, but this looks like a very long-lived wine, and my initial suggestion of an anticipated maturity date (2010-2025) should be changed to 2015-2035. Only 450 cases were made of this blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from former proprietor Jean Phillips vineyards just south of the Oakville crossroads. The spectacular dense blue/purple color remains opaque. The wine displays the hallmark creme de cassis, oral and licorice notes that are so pure, vivid and intense, and which have always been part of this vineyards classic trademark. With great purity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and even more thickness, power and density than I remember, this wine has put on weight, developed more structure, and looks like a candidate for 30 more years of aging potential. This is a brilliant wine, much in keeping with the legendary status of this producer. R. Parker, 99 pts. 11/11 1 bottle $1,400-2,000 642 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Napa This 2003 was showing spectacularly well, and based on my recollection, I think I may have liked it even more than the 2002, which is the reverse of how I felt a decade ago. One of the biggest (14.6% alcohol) wines made by Screaming Eagle during this period, it boasts an opaque ruby/ purple color as well as classic, pure, creme de cassis, cedarwood and hints of Asian soy sauce and forest oor notes. The multidimensional aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, silkytextured, opulent, rich, atypically big wine that is impeccably well-balanced. It is just starting to come into its own. Four to ve more years in the cellar will prove magical, and this 2003 is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. It should last another 20+ years. R. 658 Sine Qua Non B 20 Syrah 2008 Central Coast The 2008 Syrah B-20 is a cool, inward wine graced with layers of beautifully delineated, chiseled fruit. This is a distinctly mineral, precise style relative to the more outgoing 2009, but both are striking. Floral notes add lift as the nish turns explosive with a burst of dark fruit, tar, licorice and crushed rocks. This is one of the more understated wines readers are likely to come across from Sine Qua Non. It is gorgeous when given the time to open up. The B-20 is predominantly Syrah, with 6% Grenache and 2% Viognier. About half of the Grenache was fermented with whole clusters and the wine was aged in French oak (60% new) for 26 months. The vineyard sources are 52% Eleven Confessions, 18% Cumulus, 18% Bien Nacido and 12% White Hawk. A. Galloni for R. A sensational effort, it is performing even better out of bottle than it did from barrel. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful notes of charcoal, acacia owers, blueberries, blackberries, graphite, and subtle smoke. With great fruit, tremendous texture, and full-bodied power, it is locked and loaded. This cuvee should provide great drinking in addition to some provocative discussions over the next 10-15 years. There is an inner sweetness and sheer depth that make the 2009 compelling. The 11% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre make themselves heard clearly in adding layers of depth and pure richness. Tar, anise and graphite meld together on the rich, dramatic nish. This is a striking wine endowed with tons of pure textural dimension. A compelling wine in all senses, it reveals a haunting bouquet of acacia owers, raspberries, blueberries, black currants, graphite and pen ink. The sweetness of the tannins and medium to full-bodied, extraordinarily poised and breathtaking mouthfeel that builds incrementally is all about nobility and balance. It is an honor to taste this special wine. Drink it over the next 20-25 years. R. Parker, 99 pts. 06/12 1 bottle $100-150 671 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Napa Retasting the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon was a treat as I believe it is the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon Spottswoode has ever produced. Wonderful aromas of black raspberries, blueberries, black currants and owers jump from the glass of this dark ruby/ purple-tinged Cabernet. As I have stated before, if Chateau Margaux were in Napa Valley, it would be Spottswoode. The purity, balance and delicacy of this wine are impressive. Perhaps slightly less dense and powerful than the 2008, the 2007 is awlessly put together with nothing out of place. It, too, should age effortlessly for 20-30+ years. R. Given its quality, the price is surprisingly realistic, considering how many California North Coast mediocrities fetch three digit prices. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet exhibits wonderfully sweet aromas of melted licorice intermixed with cedar wood, black currant liqueur, chocolate, and spice box. This fullthrottle, unctuously-textured, dense, broad, pure, impeccably balanced, expansive 2001 is mouth-coating in its richness and intensity. It can be drunk with great pleasure, or cellared for 15-20 years. Wow! R. Parker, 98 pts. 12/03 12 bottles $800-1,200

684 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 1994 Napa As is the practice at this winery, they hold back 50 or so cases of their nest vintages for release after a decade. The current release of their library selection is the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, a magnicent effort that, for me, is one of Tognis six or seven nest wines. Its deep plum/purple color reveals only a touch of lightening at the edge. A glorious perfume offers up aromas of plums, gs, creme de cassis, smoke, hickory spice, and high quality cigar tobacco. In a blind tasting, this California Cabernet could easily be mistaken for a great Pauillac given its structure, density, richness, and perfume. This 1994 is just beginning to move into its adolescence. Even though it has 20-25 years of life remaining, it is approachable. It is a monumental Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the valleys legacy producers. R. Parker, 95+ pts. 06/13 12 bottles $500-700 693 Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Napa Readers looking for more ripeness, opulence, and an extroverted character should check out the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, which is actually a larger crop than 2005. This sensational dense purple-colored effort boasts delicious blueberry, black raspberry, cassis, licorice, and olive-like notes. In the mouth, there is more creme de cassis as well as background toasty oak, structure, and tannin. I dont think there has ever been a vintage where Philip Togni has cheated anybody on avor intensity or tannic structure as his wines always last, even in lighter vintages, for twenty or more years. The 2004 will benet from 4-5 years of bottle age, and should last for 25-30 years. It is, atypically for the vintage, front-end loaded. R. Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted. Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potential bidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 20 years. Bidders with specific condition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots. Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1er Cru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottled unless otherwise stated. It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening of banded cases will be determined on an individual basis. For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimeters from cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm. Bottle Sizes bottle (750 ml) magnum (2xbt) marie jeanne (3xbt) double magnum (4xbt) jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux imperiale (8xbt); Bordeaux methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy demi bottle (demi) split (1/4 bottle) Champagne
Buyers Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occur during storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of sale and no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine. Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions. Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottle conditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the following lots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on. Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful), until the flight concludes. Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules to cover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how you dispose of it.
