The "S" Series Control Grip is our small
low cost grip that is designed for simple
applications. t is commonly used as a
replacement handle when installing a
new attachment or for OEM applications
in a variety of industries. t can be
supplied in combination with any of our
electronic joysticks.
The cases are molded from a high impact
ABS polymer into a comfortable shape for
a rugged, lightweight control handle for
extreme duty applications. The standard
Sure Grip switches are covered with our
tough flexible membrane overIay that
protects the switches from dirt and
moisture.
The Standard grip features a momentary
trigger and 2 momentary thumb switches.
We can also supply this grip with some
limited custom configurations such as
toggle switches and LED's.

The "J" Series ndustrial Control Grip is our
newest mid-size grip designed specifically
to be used with our JM/JL Joysticks . We
have designed a new look and feel for this
grip. t is just as comfortable and
ergonomically friendly when supplied with
the rounded blank faceplate or with a fully
switched faceplate.
t can be ordered as a blank grip, with 2 or
4 Sure Grip switches in the faceplate and
optional trigger switch. t is the standard
handle for the JM/JL series joysticks but
can also be supplied with a threaded male
stud for installation on customer s joysticks.
The groove at the bottom of the handle is
designed for a 1.5" (37mm) boot opening.
The standard Sure Grip switches are
covered with our tough flexible membrane
overIay that protects the switches from
dirt and moisture.
Our unique design also gives us the
flexibility to install a variety of customer-
specified toggles, push-buttons,
proportional modules, LED's and other
switch options in this grip.

Sure Grip "L" Series Control Grip is our Large
handle commonly found on forestry, mining
and construction machinery. The tough ABS
housing combined with a comfortable shape
creates a rugged lightweight control handle
that has become very popular for extreme
duty applications requiring up to 10 switches.
We also have a keypad that can be installed
on the left or right side of the grip for an
additional 10 switches.
The stock handle configurations come with
2, 4, 6 or 8 thumb switches and a single or
double acting trigger. The standard Sure Grip
switches are covered with a tough, flexible
membrane overIay that protects the
switches from dirt and moisture.
These grips are also very customizable and
can be supplied with a deadman lever , toggle
switches, push on-push off maintained
switches, proportional modules, LED's and
rocker switches. The "L" Series grips can
also be installed on all of our electronic
joysticks.

JM Series Hall Effect joystick has a compact
body but uses the same internal components
of the larger JL Series. The JM Series joystick
has an P-66 rating when supplied with the
handle as shown.
JM Joystick Description
A separate high current valve driver module
is available that installs within the joystick
housing to drive solenoid valves. High
reliability in extreme duty applications is the
product design goal for the JM/JL Series
joysticks. t is resistant to the levels of
temperature, shock, vibration and EM/RF
typically found in mobile machine operating
environments.
The switched output configuration uses two
(single axis) or four (dual axis) long life 5 amp
switches. The switches and wire harness
utilize spade connectors for easy servicing.

The JM/JL Series proportional joysticks
incorporate non-contact Hall Sensor
technology to detect and transmit handle
position. Two programmable, temperature-
compensated Hall Sensors are mounted 90
degrees from one another at the equator
of a magnetized ball located in the base of
the handle. The output of the Hall sensor
changes in proportion to changes in the
magnetic field caused by handle movement.
This electronic design yields a linear
relationship between handle position and
signal output, with no hysteresis and a
stable null.
JM/JL Series joysticks are designed to
function in control systems as a signal level
device. A regulated 5 VDC supply input
yields a 0.5 - 2.5 - 4.5 VDC signal output.

The JL Series is a simple, reliable and
"Operator Friendly" input device that will
change the way you look at electronic
joysticks. Our unique spherical metal
housing ensures a solid base that protects
the electronics from outside interference
and provides the foundation for a
revolutionary new concept, an operator
adjustable mounting system. The spherical
body of the joystick is mounted within a two
piece clamp that permits up to 20 degrees of
adjustment in any direction. This feature
allows an operator to quickly and easily
adjust the mounting angle of the joystick to
optimize ergonomics and reduce fatigue.

The Variable Voltage module is designed to be
used with our "Flex Buttons" or Proportional
Trigger actuators below. This simple module
incorporates a Hall Effect sensor that detects
magnetic fields. When a magnet is moved

closer to the sensor the output signal
changes relative to the distance to the
magnet. The closer the magnet, the higher
the output signal.
When the Variable Voltage modules are supplied in a faceplate, they are activated
using a FIexing Button. This is a special flexible dome shaped button that
houses a small magnet. As the button is depressed the magnet is simply moved
closer to the module which increases the output signal. The further the button is
depressed, the higher the output signal from the module and because there is no
contact or wear between the parts, the estimated life is more than 5 million cycles.
The Proportional Trigger works much the same as the flex buttons. There is a small
magnet embedded in the proportional trigger lever . As the trigger is depressed it is
simply moving the magnet closer to the Variable Voltage Module to increase the
output signal.

The Single Axis Driver Board is designed to proportionally drive two
solenoids from proportional signal devices such as Variable Voltage
Modules or a Joystick. The SDB-P1 driver board can be configured
to accept one 0.5 - 2.5 - 4.5 VDC signal or two 0-5 VDC input signals
(Variable Voltage Modules).
The SDB-P1 has two proportional high current PWM outputs and one
switched "auxiliary" output that is turned on when either of the PWM
outputs are activated. This "auxiliary" function is often used to divert
hydraulic oil to an auxiliary valve for the attachment. The PWM
outputs are also "current compensated" to correct for changes in coil
resistance as the solenoid coils heat up and cool down.
All the outputs include protection against inductive kick back and are short circuit protected. f any of the outputs are accidentally shorted to ground,
the board will automatically shut down to protect itself until the problem is corrected.
The SDB-P1 driver board can be supplied with special software that allows up to three different settings to be stored in the memory for three different
attachments. When an attachment is changed, the operator moves the toggle switch to the new position corresponding to the new attachment and
restarts the machine to activate the new flow setting. This feature allows the operation of up to three attachments using one valve.
Calibration of the board is performed using onboard potentiometers to set the minimum and maximum flow for each solenoid. There are also LED's
that show when the board is in "Run" or "Calibrate" mode.

Joystick Driver Board (Part#: JDB-P2) is designed to work with our
JM and JL Hall Effect joysticks when a direct joystick to solenoid
valve solution is desired.
The JDB-P2 boards are equipped with four current compensated PWM proportional outputs and two "of f neutral" switched output. The board also
includes a 50ma 5 volt supply to power the JM or JLHall Effect joysticks.
All the outputs include protection against inducitive kick back and are short circuit protected. f any of the outputs are accidentally shorted to ground,
the board will automatically shut down to protect itself until the problem is corrected.
The board fits inside the lower joystick housing and is easily programmed by plugging in a serial cable and using the standard Windows "T erminal"
program. The minimum flow, maximum flow and ramp rate can all be individually adjusted for each proportional output.

The DB-L17 Logic Driver Board can read up to 10 switched inputs and control
up to 17 high current switched outputs to allow complex control of a machine' s
functions from a simple, easy to use control handle. The DB-L17 is factory
programmed to the customer's specifications and is designed for easy
installation and reliable operation in mobile equipment. The DB-L17 can be
used to replace relays, timers, diode logic circuits and programmable logic
controllers (PLCs) in many applications.

The DFA-01/02 provides direct from handle to valve, proportional control for the
operation of industry-standard ratio metric proportional valves. You can now use

series proportional valves.

nductive kick (surge) occurs any time an
electrically generated field collapses. A
voltage, opposite in polarity to the original
applied voltage is generated by the collapsing
magnetic field.
The effect happens whenever a solenoid on
a hydraulic valve is shut off. The voltage
surge can reach several hundred volts which
will arc across the switch contacts and
quickly destroy them. Switch life can be
reduced to one-tenth of normal.

switches that have proven to give the longest life
and greatest reliability of any switch on the
market.
Wire Routing Tips
Wire breakage inside the cable can be one
of the most difficult and frustrating problems
to find. Almost all wire breakage problems
can be traced to two common installation
errors:
1. Crushing the wire:
Nylon tie wraps are very useful in giving the
wiring harness a neat and finished
appearance, but applying them too tightly
can crush the wire insulation and pinch the
wires. When the cable is pinched, it doesn't
allow the wire to slide inside the cable jacket
and creates a stress point (See Fig.3).
2. Forcing the wire to fIex at one point :
f the wire from the control handle is routed
down the joystick shaft with little slack, the
wire will tend to flex over a small area.
Eventually, the repeated flexing will cause
the wire strands to break. The solution is to
provide enough slack in the cable so that
the flexing motion is distributed over a
longer section of wire.
deally, a loop should be left around the
mounting stud to spread the flexing point
over a larger area. The loop can be
created either inside or outside the
rubber boot.
While the switches are rated for up to 10 million
cycles, switch life is dependent on the load
(in amps) and proper diode protection.
f the handles will be switching computer signals
(under 20 ma), the best performance will be
obtained using switches with gold plated contacts.

nstallation Tips
Diodes should be installed as close as
possible to the solenoid. Soldering a diode
directly across the 2 solenoid terminals is ideal.
Diodes rates at 200 volts and 1 amp are readily
available for a few cents and are appropriate
for most applications.
Diodes have a strip on one end of the case.
On equipment wired with negative grounds,
the end with the stripe should be installed on
the most positive side of the solenoid. (This is
usually the side that has the wire from the
switch.) (See Fig. 1)
