HP Instant Capacity product overview

This section describes the changes in the HP Instant Capacity product on OA Firmware. The basic features of iCAP are not modified by the introduction of iCAP on OA. However, there are some significant changes.

iCAP commands
All the iCAP commands can be executed from both operating system and OA command line interface. The only difference is While executing icapmodify command from OS, the partition ID parameter must not be mentioned, the current partition ID is taken as default ID. While executing icapmodify command from OA, the partition ID parameter must be mentioned explicitly.

All the commands continue to work from OA command line interface. For more information about commands, see Chapter titled iCAP HP-UX Manpages for HP Integrity Superdome 2 with Dynamic Cores in the HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide

TiCAP
For more information about TiCAP, see Chapter titled iCAP HP-UX Manpages for HP Integrity Superdome 2 with Dynamic Cores in the HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide

New features in Instant Capacity version 10.04.01 (OS version) and HP Instant Capacity Firmware

GiCAP
Setting up GiCAP environment
For more information, see Chapter titled iCAP HP-UX Manpages for HP Integrity Superdome 2 with Dynamic Cores in the HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide NOTE: Group Manager (GM) and OA of the member complexes in GiCAP group should be in the same network. Communication occurs only between GM and OA through SSL certificates, and the partition details are hidden from Group Manager. Communication occurs through Port 5989, 80, and 443 so these ports must be open on any firewalls between the GM and OA. The CIM Server configuration property enableHttpsConnection must be set to a value of true on all GiCAP Group Managers and on all OS instances of all member systems.

Known problems
Error generated during partition reboot
In HP Integrity Superdome 2 with Dynamic Cores, when partitions are managed with TiCAP turned ON, and if one or more of the partitions goes down, the RTUs associated with the partitions are freed up by iCAP and are available for use in other partitions. This may lead to errors while booting the partitions that are down. This problem can be solved by using TiCAP to boot up the partition.

Command timeout
When a command timeout occurs while executing icapmodify -a or -d, then there can be a mismatch between Intended Active and Actual Active values. You must execute icapmodify -s to correct this mismatch.
nl

Expiration time for TiCAP in warning message in syslog is not correct

If the warning period message appears in the syslog, the complex is in warning period. If the expiration time for TiCAP is not logged correctly in this message, refer to the icapstatus command output for TiCAP expiration time.

Low-level WBEM errors (HP-UX)

Occasionally, on a busy system, especially one with many partitions, you may see errors such as the following:
Location of Instant Capacity information 7

ERROR: The following low-level WBEM error occurred: Empty HTTP response message.

or:
ERROR: The following low-level WBEM error occurred: Locking or unlocking the target failed.

These errors result from contention for system resources from the various partitions in the complex. If you see these messages, retry the Instant Capacity operation.

GiCAP Known problems (HP-UX)

Resolving errors during addition of Standby GM
While adding Standby GM there is a possibility of certificate exchange failure for the Superdome 2 members. This can be resolved by re-adding the member to the GM.
nl

Handling errors while re-adding GiCAP member

Follow these steps if you get an error while re-adding a member to the GM from both Active GM and standby GM: 1. Execute the cimtrust -l command to view the list of certificates available in the GM (AGM and SGM). 2. Look for the certificate which contains the Common Name mentioned in the OA certificate on the member. You can obtain OA certificate information on the member, by executing Show OA certificate on the OA CLI. 3. Execute the cimtrust -r i <Issuer> -S <Subject> command to remove the certificate. Issuer and subject information should be taken from cimtrust -l output.

Negative Cores without Usage rights value in icapmanage -s output

If icapmanage -s reports a negative cores without usage rights value after a seize operation is performed on one of the members, execute icapmanage -s on the GM again after sometime.

Inconsistent values reported by icapmanage during rapid updating

If the command icapmanage -s is executed while the group is being rapidly updated (for example, during gWLM load balancing), the number of loans and borrows assigned to each member may not add up in a consistent manner. This is because the status reporting checks with each member in turn, and if resources are simultaneously being reassigned between group members, the reporting may reflect an intermediate state. If this occurs, reissue the status command when the group is in a quiescent state.

Invalid contact address corrupts the GiCAP database

If a GiCAP member sets the contact email address value of spaces (using the command icapmodify -c " "), the GiCAP database gets corrupted. If this happens, the GiCAP group must be re-created.

Removing the standby group manager when it has a failure

If the standby Group Manager has a failure and you decide to remove it as a standby (by executing the command icapmanage -r -S on the active Group Manager), then if the failed system subsequently is booted, it still considers that it is a standby Group Manager. This occurs even though the rest of the group does not consider it to be a standby Manager. If you want to re-establish it as the standby, run the command icapmanage -a -S on the active Group Manager. However, if you have already established another standby Group Manager (for example), or just want to remove the leftover standby information, you need to stop the cimprovider and remove the GiCAP
8 Instant Capacity support for HP Integrity Superdome 2 with Dynamic Cores release notes

database from the previously failed system. Use commands similar to the following on the system where you want to remove the standby information: icapmanage -s # verify that this is the *obsolete* standby system cimprovider -d HP_GiCAPProviderModule rm /etc/opt/iCAP/GiCAP_db IMPORTANT: Do not run the above sequence of commands on any system that is the active Group Manager for the group, as it removes the GiCAP database entirely and leaves the group members in an orphaned state.

icapmanage hangs when specifying illegal standby group manager

When adding a standby Group Manager using the icapmanage -a -S command, you cannot specify a system to be a standby for itself. The icapmanage command does detect and displays an error in the case where you specify a hostname exactly equal to the hostname where you invoke the icapmanage command. However, if you specify an alternate hostname for the OS instance running the icapmanage command, the command hangs.

Split GiCAP groups

If the active Group Manager system is unavailable, an administrator can have a standby Group Manager take control of the group operations at any time using the icapmanage -Q command. While this can be done routinely (for example, to allow shutting down a functioning, active Group Manager for maintenance), normally, this command is executed either when the active Group Manager has failed, or when a network outage prevents it from communicating with the group members. When a standby manager takes control, it attempts to update all members and the current active Group Manager. However, in failure cases, it is possible that the icapmanage -Q command is unable to contact the active Group Manager and some members of the groups it manages. If this happens, the previously active Group Manager may remain active, unaware of the change in control. This is referred to as a bifurcated (or split) GiCAP group. For information on how to repair and manage split groups, see the section titled Group Manager Failover Considerations in either the icap(1M) manpage, or the HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x User Guide available at www.hp.com/go/hp-icap-docs.

icapstatus borrow/loan values

Under some circumstances, the borrow and loan values reported by the icapstatus command for a member of a GiCAP group do not reflect expected changes in values. This typically happens when the usage rights are released by a member system but are not yet assigned or reclaimed by another member system in the group. The icapmanage -s -v command shows which resources are held by the Group Manager. While RTUs count may seem wrong any actual icapmodify operations will result in the RTUs moving to the correct member.

Temporary capacity reporting in a group

Temporary capacity is sometimes held by the Group Manager for quick deployment to individual members. This can have unexpected results. For example, the total temporary capacity for a group reported by the icapmanage -s command may exceed the total obtained by adding the individual temporary capacity balances reported for the members of the group or temporary capacity might be shifted from one member system to another member system, even when an activation request gets an error. In general, however, temporary capacity for a group is pooled for use by all members of the group. Therefore, the true balance for the group is always represented by the group total reported by the icapmanage -s command, and that total is always available to all members of the group. Note that in version 8.02 or later, the verbose option (-v) is enhanced to display more information, most notably the TiCAP balance held by the Group Manager.

Known problems

Automatic multi-homing not supported

GiCAP does not support automatic multi-homing (multiple NICs and IPs for a host). A member is always contacted using the hostname (or a list of hostnames) provided when it is added to the group. A member always communicates with the Group Manager through its hostname. If the Group Manager is not reachable through that hostname by a given member, the member is unable to participate in the group.

Considerations when upgrading hardware on a Group Manager

If you upgrade the hardware on a Group Manager system, you must preserve and restore the UUID and the partition information on the system.

If AGM is unable to get status of SGM it shows that as Active GM

If AGM is unable to collect status of SGM due to any reason (network is not reachable or cimserver is down or cimserver is not responding within the given time), AGM assume that SGM is also an active GM. And this can be very well a case of split group. Verify if cimserver on SGM is working fine, and whether it is reachable from AGM, if this problem persists.
