This document provides a worksheet to calculate the methanol injection rate required to inhibit hydrate formation in a natural gas pipeline. It considers factors like inlet/outlet temperatures, gas/water flow rates, hydrate temperature and safety factors.

The calculation considers factors like inlet/outlet temperatures, gas/water flow rates, hydrate temperature, safety factors, depression required, change in water content, water of condensation and methanol content in water, gas and condensate.

The sources of water considered are water already present in the gas stream, water that condenses out of the gas stream due to Joule-Thomson cooling, and any free water present from condensate.

A Guide for Engineers", Gulf Professional Publishers, Amsterdam, Holland, (2003) Disclaimer: The author has made every effort to ensure that the spreadsheet, if used unaltered, contains no errors. The method presented is a simplified one, suitable for many applications. However, the user assumes all liability when using this spreadsheet. Warning: This sheet is unprotected. Changes can be made to the calculation cells and these changes will affect the result. Green Cells Blue Cells: Yellow Cells Purple Cells: User must input these values from process data. User gets these values from the methods presented in the accompanying book. Chapter numbers and figure numbers refer to the above book. These cells are automatically calculated. Do not enter values in them. Calculated injection rates based on information provided by user. The sheet is probably more complicated than need be because it shows all of the intermediate steps in the calculation. Lines 5 through 9 Line 21 The user inputs his own information to identify the sheet.

It is recommended that a safety factor of at least 5 Fahrenheit degrees or 3 Celsius degrees be included in the calculation. The policy of your company may specify a different safety factor.
