Bearing stress in connections

Bearing stress (b): The stress developed between a fastener and a
plate as shown in the fig.

t: plate thickness

Shear Stress

The

intensity

of

the

internal

forces

parallel

to

the

cut

is

called SHEAR STRESS, and is given by this relation:

V: component of the force

parallel to the surface

Important note:
Shear stress can be:

3Page

1- single shear as shown in the figure

2- Double shear as shown in the figure, here ( avg = V / A = F/2A)

Stress on an oblique plane under axial loadings

f we consider an oblique plane the stress given at the cut will not be the
maximum stress

First case:
not oblique cross section ( )
in this case the normal stress is maximum and the shear stress equals zero as
shown in the fig.

Second case:

The oblique cross section ()

Normal force (N = F = P cos ), shear force (V = P sin )

The not oblique cross section has area (A0) and the oblique cross sectional
area (A)

Very important note:

When = 45, we reach maximum normal stress and

maximum shear stress.
max = P / 2A0
