1. To determine the volumetric efficiency.
2. To determine the overall efficiency.
Introduction
Reciprocating pump:- If the mechanical energy is converted into hydraulic energy by
sucking the liquid into a cylinder in which a piston is reciprocating, which exerts the thrust
on the liquid and increases its hydraulic energy is known as reciprocating pump. A
reciprocating pump is a positive plunger pump. It is often used where relatively small
quantity of liquid is to be handled and where delivery pressure is quite large. Reciprocating
pump consists of following parts.
1. A cylinder with a piston
5. Suction pipe
2. Piston rod
6. Delivery pipe
3. Connecting rod
7. Suction valve
4. Crank
8. Delivery valve

Conclusion
Volumetric efficiency in a hydraulic pump refers to the percentage of actual fluid flow out
of the pump compared to the flow out of the pump without leakage. In other words, if the
flow out of a 100cc pump is 92cc (per revolution), then the volumetric efficiency is 92%.
The volumetric efficiency will change with the pressure and speed a pump is operated at,
therefore when comparing volumetric efficiencies, the pressure and speed information
must be available. When a single number is given for volumetric efficiency, it will typically
be at the rated pressure and speed.
