The roman army led a difficult battle against the German army in the winter of A.D 180.

Maximus was the commander of the Army of the North of Rome and in the final, Rome won the war and the old emperor Marcus Aurelius congratulated him for his great job. Marcus Aurelius was old and sick, so he had to nominate a new emperor. He had a son, Commodus, however, he thought that Commodus wasn't a good choice (because he was a corrupt man), so he chose Maximus to become the emperor of Rome. When Marcus Aurelius said to his son that he wouldnt replace him as protector of Rome, but that person would be Maximus, Commodus got very angry and killed his own father. Commodus declared himself Emperor of Rome and he ordered his soldiers to kill Maximus and his family. The soldiers tried to catch Maximus, but they werent able to, so they lied to the new emperor, saying that Maximus was death. After Maximus' escape, he wanted to save his son and his wife, so he returned to his house, but by the way, he faced a lot of difficulties, like hunger and thirst. Unfortunately, when he arrived to his home, his son and wife were already death. Afterwards, some men found Maximus and made him a prisoner. Then they sold him to Proximo, the owner of a gladiator school at Morocco. In that school, Maximus refused to fight with the other gladiators, but he began to do it when he was required to fight in a real arena, where he needed to defeat the others for survive. In Rome, Commodus was spending a lot of money in his new idea to make him popular and loved by the people: the return of games. Lucilla (his sister), didnt agree with this idea, because it didnt solve the problems of Rome, so she decided to meet Gracchus and Gaius, two members of the senate. The objective was to find a way of diminishing emperors power and give it to the senate. One day, after the beginning of the games, Proximo took his gladiators to the Coliseum. In the balconies, the crowd was shouting and screaming, and they loved to see the gladiators death and blood. There would be also the Emperor there, so Maximus put a helmet to hide his face, because he didnt want to be recognized. Proximos gladiators moved into the center of the huge Romas arena. At the same time, three other teams of gladiators appeared from different entrances and, finally, entered Commodus, Lucilla and Lucius (Lucillas son). Then, the gladiators saluted the Caesar, all of them except Maximus. After this, six chariots came and the battle began! If you want to know what will happen next, you must read the book!
