On April 2, Crowfoot MP and Minister of State (Finance) Kevin Sorenson, who currently represents Strathmore and Wheatland County, announced he has led his nomination papers to become the rst MP of the new Battle River-Crowfoot riding. Strathmore, Wheatland County, Chestermere, part of Medicine Hat and High River will become part of the new Bow River riding. No one has ofcially announced their intent to run at this time, but it is the riding that George Canyon and a few other people have said publicly they were considering running in. Due to population growth across the province, six new constituencies have been added to Alberta, causing all the boundary lines to change. Sorenson has represented the Crowfoot constituency for 14 years. Im very disappointed to lose the south because you gain a lot of friends and you get to know councils and you work with people and then all of a sudden youre into a different riding. Part of it is disappointing and I guess in other ways you look forward to working with new people again, said Sorenson. The election, which will see the new constituencies come into effect, wont happen until October 2015. I continue to represent Strathmore (Wheatland County), and Chestermere until the election, which is in the fall of 15. Its a year and a half so its not like its a good-bye, but I think it is also important for them to know where my intentions are, where I would run, and I live in that northern part so its kind of an obvious t.

The Wheatland Athletics Association (WAA) officially capped off their 2013-2014 season by hosting the annual 3-on-3 hockey tournament April 5-6 at the Strathmore Family Centre. County budget approved

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor It was a wrap on March 25 for the Final 2014 Operating and Capital budget, developed for Wheatland County. Councillors approved the budget, with changes as presented by the General Manager of Corporate and Financial Service Pat Leitch. However, in discussion of the budget, Councillor Rex Harwood had some questions about the overall process of reviewing the budget. With this being my rst budget, I guess I thought there might be a bit more of a review. The staff does go through great lengths to prepare this budget, but for some things I wasnt sure when I could give my input, said Harwood. We are fortunate in this county that we can afford to meet department requests. I have got three years to get this right and by that time, I am going to know the ins and outs of the entire budget. I am not just going to accept what is in the budget; I want to know why it is there. Harwood has accounting background and he felt he would like more information and review. He recognised the onus is on him to get the information he requires, but he would to like to see a wants-and-needs list from each department and have at least one meeting that would evaluate the budget, to collectively look at areas that can generate savings. He said he would see if that might be possible for next years budget. There was also discussion about hiring another peace ofcer, which was included in the 2014 budget. The action was defended in a business case presented by Sgt. Jeff Cyr, explaining an additional ofcer would help with an increased police presence on the road for commercial and noncommercial trafc, monitoring and ticketing of overweight vehicles, to decrease the amount of overtime currently occurring, create better response to noise complaints, provide coverage when other ofcers are in court, and area coverage because the county has a large geographic area. The department changed to a 12 hour shift schedule to increase efciency, and an extra ofcer would ensure adequate staff was available to cover when staff were away on approved holidays, courses and leaves of absence. While the ofcer position isnt currently posted, the budget was anticipating the need later this year. Discussion also touched on equipment purchases and turnover times. Leitch said adjustments were needed to the interim budget, to include things like the cost of living index that was set at 2.13 per cent for 2014, and changes to provincial MSI Capital funding and school levies that were released this March from the province. The staff managed to save money and enhance the budget by securing several grants. A formal report on the grants will be presented to council at a later date. Harwood said he was surprised about how much money they did secure through the various grants. He complimented them on their achievement. The Reeve commended the staff on their presentation of the budget material, as well. Reeve Koester said he appreciated Harwoods fresh eyes on the subject, as it kept everyone vigilant to provide the best service to county ratepayers. The 2014 budget will be publically available on the county website. The draft tax rate bylaw will go to council on April 1.

Kaisers invade Playfair Lodge

Four generations of the Kaiser clan, and extended family and friends, braved spring weather and gathered in Bassano to celebrate the 87th birthday of Mary Kaiser on March 30. The Playfair Lodge, where Mary makes her home these days, was filled with childrens laughter and celebration, which spiced up the day. She was showered with spring bouquets, cards and gifts and the day ended with cake, ice cream and strawberries. The Kaisers have farmed in the Hussar area for over 100 years, and Marys children and grand/great grandchildren. are an integral part of the Hussar community to this day. Strathmore Lions hold another successful auction

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor The Strathmore Lions Club was founded on Dec. 12, 1938, and just recently celebrated their 75th Charter Night. The Lions hold their major auction once a year to help fund community projects and enhancements in Strathmore. This year was their 28th Annual Ladies and Gentlemen Community Auction. To serve the community, the members have spearheaded numerous ventures through the years including the existing Civic/Aquatic Centre, the skateboard park and the water park to name a few. (Strathmore Lions) Auctioneer Mason Cockx did a fantastic job keeping the show running smoothly, and with the help of spotters like Brad Walls and John Bland, you couldnt miss a beat. Easter market returns

SHANNON LeClAIR Times Reporter The Easter Eggstravaganza Market is coming back for a second year on April 19 at the Legion. Danielle Stahl and a friend, Christine Jones, had been talking one day about the town and how, since it was growing, there is not always enough room at the markets with vendor spots often selling out fast. We decided to do a spring market and make it kind of a family day. We try and do it on the same day as Remax puts on their Easter egg hunt, said Stahl. Its something to support Strathmore, and we choose the Legion to support the Legion and to hopefully bring people through downtown to kind of support the downtown businesses too. The day promises to be a fun family day. We have a few good things going on. We have photos with the Easter Bunny ... face painting, we also have a lunch special that the Legion puts on for us, its $1 hotdogs so that was a huge hit last year, said Stahl. There will be a kids Easter bonnet contest, where the kids get to craft their own bonnets and then at 2:30 p.m. they will go up on the stage where there will be friendly judging of the best bonnet. There will also be door prizes which will be rafed off at 3:30 p.m. Stahl said you dont have to be there to win. The market will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the vendors include Avon, Epicure, Fairy Dust Creations, Flower Tot accessories, Grace Adele, It Works and much more. Town discusses draft nancial statement

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Darren Adamson from Young Parkyn McNabb spoke to town council at the April 2 meeting and gave highlights on the towns 2013 nancial statements. The towns nancial assets at the end of December were approximately $24.5 million, which is close to previous years of $25 million said Adamson. Liabilities came in around $20.4 million, which is down slightly from the previous years $22.9 million, which is mainly due to the repayment of long-term debt. The long-term debt has now decreased from $16,930,609 to $15,460,695. Adamson said when you take the nancial assets minus the liabilities you get the net nancial assets, which is a positive $4.1 million, which is up from two years ago when the town was slightly in the red. For non-nancial assets the tangible capital assets is the most signicant one at about $178 million, which is up from the previous years $173 million. The accumulated surplus for 2013 was $182,845,411, up from the previous years $175,775,819. Under the consolidated statement of operations, which is the revenue and expenses for the year the town saw $21,828,211 in revenue. The expenses at the end of Dec. 31 were $22,718,487, which is a deciency of $890,276. The accumulated surplus at the beginning of 2013 was $175,775,819, and the year ended with an accumulated surplus of $182,845,411. Those were the main highlights that Adamson wanted to point out to council. A decision to accept the nancial reports was postponed until the next council meeting on April 16. The nancial reports are still in draft form and not ofcial until accepted by council.

It is a serious illness in infants where it can be life-threatening. Pertussis is also called whooping cough because of the whooping sound that is made when gasping for air after a fit of coughing. Manufacturers of tablet medication put a score line on the tablet if it is OK to cut the tablet in half. If there is no score line, it may not be good to cut it in half. When in doubt, check with your pharmacist. There is a good reason why some tablets should not be broken and breaking it could affect how it works in the body. Request to waive fees approved

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Both the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society and Strathmore High School (SHS) asked council if they would waive the development permit fee for the temporary signs lining the fence. Betty Ann Fountain, development ofcer for the town, gave a little history on the signs, which are advertising for local businesses. In January 2013 applications were received from both the Ag. Society and SHS requesting that the development permit fee for temporary signs be removed. The land is zoned P1, public service district, and under the land use bylaw, temporary signs are considered discretionary, which means they require an approved development permit and a fee of $75 per sign. The signs would then be allowed for a maximum of one year, and the matter must be brought back each year for approval. Fountain said in the last few weeks she had received new applications and requests to waive the fees. For the Ag. Societys 46 signs they would be required to pay $3,450, and the 25 signs at SHS would cost them $1,875. Fountain said that planning and development was requesting that the fee be waived. Councillor Pat Fule stated that the funds received by SHS for the signs is used to help lower registration fees, and other fees such as busing, for their sports teams. Councillor Brad Walls said the revenue generated by the Ag. Societys signs is used to help offset some of the costs for user groups, like the Air Cadets, who use the grounds and/or some of its buildings free of cost. Councillor Bob Sobols only concern is the aesthetics. He wants to make sure the signs continue to look newish, no damage or grafti, which Fountain said is included in an agreement with the two groups. The only cost to the town for waiving the fee is the time of the development ofcer with the applications. Council unanimously approved the motion to waive the fees. MAILBOX GARBAGE Councillor Denise Peterson told council she has received calls from concerned residents about the litter and mess being left around mailboxes - yers being left to blow around, and dog feces. Peterson said it is causing concern and distress to the residents. She also said after having researched it she found that its a common problem in other communities, and in some of them there are people contracted to do the work. Councillor Bob Sobol said walking by the mailboxes on Thomas Drive it seems like every person leaves their mail behind. He agrees some action needs to be taken to alleviate the situation, and he knows garbage cans wont eliminate the problem, but it would be a good place to start. We have to do something, were talking about a lot of paper, said Sobol Canada Post has stated that in severe cases where customers are discarding a variety of items at or around a site there is a letter that can be sent requesting that people respect their neighbours and their community by disposing of unwanted mail at home. I think thats a very good place to start, I think it is a very good place to start and just talking about being good neighbours, just bringing that awareness, maybe putting a little notication in our utility bills as well, would just encourage people to be just a little more mindful, said Peterson. Potential solutions will be looked into and brought back to council. DEVELOPmENT AGREEmENT The standard long form development agreement was brought to council for approval at the April 2 meeting. Its the standards that the town wants to have in place if a developer wants to come in to undertake a new subdivision, install municipal infrastructure and expand it into their subdivision area, said Harry Salm, safety codes ofcer and building/development ofcer for the town. So as theyre impacting our infrastructure, theres certain things we want in place to ensure that the town is protected, that the infrastructure is done correctly, and that there is a process that is in place for this. Council approved the suggested changes to the agreement. LANd USE RE-dESIGNATION The proposed re-designation for a section of downtown north was brought back to council on the April 2 meeting. The le had been brought forward previously to see the land zoned from R1 to an R3 district. Residents in the area were concerned about the designation and wanted to see it changed to R2X, which would put some satisfactory restrictions on the development in terms of height and other factors. Council approved the request to change the designation to R2X.

Property Assessment 101

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Sometimes understanding property assessments can be a confusing business, so Wheatland County Senior Assessment and IT Co-ordinator Dennis Klem gave an interesting and clear refresher course on property assessment as part of his report to council given in Wheatland Council chambers on March 25. Dont get bogged down in all the numbers, it really boils down to four types of assessment, said Klem. Keep in mind though that the numbers are a bit of a moving target. The provincial Municipal Government Act denes ratings that the assessors use in the formulas set to determine assessments. They are broken down in the county to Farmland, Residential properties, Non-residential and Commercial property (which includes Linear assessments), and Machinery and Equipment. Farm rates are based on land in use, to produce an agricultural product. This includes crop, forage, tree, shrubs, birds, bees, sh, livestock and sod farms. Klem said the residential rates are based in part on market values as of July 1, in the year prior to assessment. This is applied to any complete or progressive building of residential property, and includes any improvements or changes to the property as of Dec. 31. The assessment for residential parcels less than or equal to three acres, represents the average market value for land and improvements on any buildings or structures. For parcels greater than three acres, the assessment includes a minimum of three acres and the residential improvements assessed at market value, and any remaining land is assessed at market value unless it is deemed farmland. Some ratepayers complain the assessments are too low and dont accurately reect their house value. They need to keep in mind that property assessment market values will differ from current real estate market values. Assessment market value rates are based on the prior year, and it is an averaged value of surrounding assessment market values. Non-residential and commercial properties are those properties where commerce or industrial activity occurs on the property, which includes land, buildings, and structures (i.e., stores, mechanical repair, golf courses, gravel pits, land and structures situated at industrial plants-excluding machinery and equipment) and they are assessed at market value. Linear property, a subcategory of non-residential, includes cable distribution (television), electric transmission lines, telecommunication equipment, pipelines, oil, and gas wells, is assessed at a regulated value. The market value is also set by July 1 of the previous year and the type of linear property can alter the assessment rate. Some linear property has its assessment rate set by the province. Machinery and Equipment assessments are based on a formula for operational machinery that also takes into consideration the depreciation values of equipment. Any installation used in the processing or manufacturing of a product is classied under this category (i.e., separators or dehydrators or compressors at gas and oileld installations, certain components at the large grain elevators) and is assessed at a regulated value. Property assessments can be appealed, but there is a fee to register an appeal. Klem suggested that he can be contacted directly prior to ling an appeal, to discuss any concerns property owners have. There may be some actions that can be made prior to ling a formal appeal. He has the authorization to change property assessments, but not taxes owed. Taxpayers have a 60 day window to le a complaint or appeal. There have been few appeals launched in the past, but there is a process in place to appeal. See the county website or talk to Klem to get more details. I am still interested in hearing about it (ratepayer concerns), even if it is after the appeal deadline, it could be very benecial for the ratepayer to do that, said Klem. Skiing the day away

On March 24 students in Grades 3,4, 5 & 6 at Carseland School made their annual ski trip to Nakiska. It was an early start to a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed a great day of skiing and snowboarding. We had some very sleepy students and adults on the trip home. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to go along, without you this trip would not be possible, and also thank you to the awesome students and staff of Carseland School for once again making our school community proud.

Wheatland property assessment trends

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Wheatland County shouldnt expect any rollercoaster rides any time soon regarding assessment trends, according to Wheatland County Senior Assessment and IT Co-ordinator Dennis Klem. He gave council a picture of what was seen over the last ve years and what to expect for the coming year in council chambers on March 25. In 2013, there were 4.87 percent of assessments designated as farmland assessments in the county; 22.85 per cent were residential, and 9.95 nonresidential, which included 42.47 per cent linear assessments and 19.56 machinery assessments. If we didnt have the linear assessments, our residential properties would be bearing a lot of the tax burden from an assessment viewpoint, said Klem. Klem summarized that generally, farmland assessments in the county had gone down a bit in the last year and they showed a small steady decline over the last ve years, which was also reected in the machinery and equipment category. He suggested it might be due to farmland being reclassied for residential or non-residential uses, such as small acreages or business and commercial purposes. This was supported by the increased numbers for the residential and nonresidential categories that have increased with new growth in the county. Klem said the market value change for residential assessments was only about a one per cent increase over last year, with pockets of areas in the county higher than others. He cautioned council to not become too dependent on linear income, as development in this area can uctuate signicantly or disappear over the long term. Property assessments are divided by 1000 to get the mil rate that determines taxes paid. There are extra taxes added for needs within the community such as Wheatland Housing Management, Drumheller and District solid waste management, and the Gleichen debenture levy. The education mil rate (set by the province) is also added, which is all totaled to give the taxes owed by ratepayers. Tax (mill rates per 1000 of assessment) rates are as follows: Municipal Residential 4.1, Farm 11.5, Non-residential 7.7, Machinery and Equipment 7.7. The education rate (for both Public and Catholic) is 2.53 for Residential and Farmland and 3.85 for Non-residential assessment. Overall, Klem said, the rates have not changed too much from 2013. Spring break at the library

SHANNON LECLAIR Parliamentary Report The Easter break is almost here and parents will be looking for things for their kids to do while school is out. There are many options around town, and the Strathmore Municipal Library is adding another one to the table. One of the goals of the library is to provide fun, free programming for families every time the kids are off school. So whether its our Friday Fun Film programs or spring break, we love to plan these types of activities, said Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison. Last year the library had hosted a full day of events, and while it was successful, it was a lot to pack into one day. This year they decided to break it up into a little and instead have something a little unique happening every day. The rst day is Celebrate Earth Day on April 22, which will be all about recyclable crafts. So this one is all about saving the environment, recycling, up-cycling and we thought what a great way to celebrate Earth Day, to have an array of crafts made out of recycled items, said Erison. She said they are planning on making bird feeders, plants in eggshells and there are more crafts to be announced. The crafting will happen from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Get Your Game On will happen on April 23, and will be an all day event. That day the library will be a very loud place because we have an array of games spread throughout the entire library, said Erison. There will be twister, a Nintendo Wii set up and board games. There will also be a mini golf course set up throughout the library. April 24 is the Great Library Scavenger Hunt. Children and their families are encouraged to bring out their inner detective for the day and follow the clues that will be placed throughout the library. The scavenger hunt is another all-day event, and families are encouraged to drop in whenever they have a chance that day. To wrap up the week well have our popular Friday Fun Film program, said Erison about the nal event on April 25. The Friday Fun Film will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and anyone wishing to watch the lm is welcome to bring their own snack. As always, all of the events at the library are free, and no registration is required.
Dimes for dogs

During the One School, One Book initiative at Brentwood School earlier this year the students were also asked to donate spare change, if they could, to the Dimes for Dogs fundraiser for Oops-A-Dazy. PAT FULE Fule for Thought Theres nothing like putting your life in perspective with simple and mundane house chores. Let me explain; Im not a big fan of people with big egos. If you have condence, thats one thing, but if you are overly proud and brag, or you BS to make yourself look good to others, thats where I get off the train. Ive coached basketball for about 30 years, and maybe thats a good thing, but it doesnt make me a big deal. Ive coached Sr. High Girls and Guys teams, to Jr. High, to club, and to our Youth JETS teams. Some of my teams have beaten other teams by 50 or 70 points, but Ive also lost in a Sr. Boys game by 100 points! Its actually hard to lose a game by 100 points, but one year my team did! So, I know that after over 350 games coaching, there are going to be ups and downs. You can easily go from the penthouse to the outhouse! So, speaking of outhouses, I went for a walk today and had the music blaring through my ear phones and it led to my chore. I found myself thinking here I am in my back yard, I have two University degrees, and Im shoveling up a lot of dog poo! Who knew that in one week, our little dog could create so much! Im cutting out anything with ber for him thats the last thing this mutt needs! The whole time Im doing it, hes been let out, and hes watching me! Not only am I his servant, hes my foreman! How did this happen how did he become the master? The dog looked at me and wagged his tail, he looked so happy, watching me take care of his poo! Most of you know that Ive been teaching a long time, and Id like to feel as if those years have all been worthwhile, and that I may have made a difference in someone, anyones life. And then you have a bad day. The kids arent as excited about your lesson as you thought, theyre hard to manage, or someone has one of the dumbest answers ever on a test! My Eng. 20-1s have been struggling through Shakespeares Macbeth and I always try to make it interesting. However, Ive learned that no matter what you do, someones going to tune out! In the play, King Duncan of Scotland (spoiler alert!), is murdered in his bedroom chamber by Macbeth. One of the ll in the blank questions asked which character is chiey responsible for killing the king? One student actually put in the name Duncan! So, when I discussed the test results, I asked the class generally, do any of you think that Duncan committed suicide?! Also, kids Tom is not the name of Norways king who attacked Scotland at the start of the play! Tom, Tom does that even sound like a Norwegian name?! Its here when I usually say something like: I should have gone into real estate. I couldve been a reman I like to watch things burn! But no, I wanted to be a teacher, to make a difference in someones life wow! One year, I had a curling quiz for my class and one of the questions asked the students to describe the delivery in curling. One guy wrote a very graphic and in-depth description of an actual birth delivery, using the hack! At that time I was absolutely abbergasted, I still cant believe that was his answer! He actually has gone on to become a teacher, so I really worry about his students! It has really made me question my career choice! I was trying to get some marking done in the PE Ofce this past Friday, and I foolishly left the door open. Twice in about 10 minutes, a Grade 10 girl scared the crap out of me! I was just trying to mark, and I thought Id be left alone, but thats not how high school kids work, is it? So after two near strokes, Id been shaken enough it was payback time! Her class was playing badminton, and I waited until a break in the game. I had to do this for us, for all of us who sometimes feel were spinning our wheels, or were being unfairly treated! I snuck onto the court behind her and yelled loudly. She screamed, jumped, and threw her badminton racquet right up in the air it was the best! I really had no sympathy for her, as it was a great scare, and she did have it coming. It actually made me feel better, as if I nally accomplished something this week.

Students experience hunger

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor The fourth annual Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) 25-Hour Famine was held at the school on April 4 and 5. Eighty-eight students participated in the event, raising over $2,200 for the Chalice, a Canadian Catholic charity that is one of the most well-respected and nancially responsible charities in the nation. Their work can be seen in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Haiti and the Ukraine through special projects and sponsorships. One of the great projects that Chalice has undertaken is eRoots Enough Food, For Everyone. Everywhere. The Chalice Canada website states, Chalice built the e-Roots initiative to empower the families and communities of their sponsored children in Africa. Working with small Community Development Groups (CDGs), the programme provides resources, education, training and formation so that they can grow their own food and develop sustainable agribusinesses. During the weekend, students in Grades 7 to 12 drank only juice or water from 9 a.m. on Friday, April 4 until 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 when they were treated to an amazing PostFamine Feast! After spending the morning in their regular Friday classes, the students kept busy during the famine with games, sports, prayer and reection as well as a morning Mass on Saturday. HCC is thankful to all the students for their participation, the teachers for their leadership and the parents who made monetary donations or donations of food, time and talents to give the students a wonderful breakfast at the end of their 25-hour experience. The HCC Famine has been very successful every year. Over the past four years students have raised more than $10,400 for those in need around the world. KAITY STEWART Crowfoot 4-H Multi The Crowfoot 4-H Multi club is getting ready for their Achievement Day at the Ag Grounds on Friday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. Set up will take place on Thursday, April 10. Projects will be judged Friday morning. Kendal reported that on March 21, Shawn Cull came and taught them about Macro-photography. They took close up pictures of their eyes, plants and rocks. It was really fun and they learned a lot. On March 28 they toured around the countryside taking pictures of old barns, some baby cows and the landscape. Riley reported that the archery kids are working hard on nishing up their leather work and having fun practicing shooting targets. On March 16, I had a rag quilt workshop with Dallas Stickel on how to assemble my rag quilt. Thank you Dallas for your time and knowledge. I am nished all my sewing projects, I am very happy with how everything turned out. Natasha reported that the dogs are working hard so that they will be ready for 4-H on Parade. We would like to thank Rylan Munchrath for the use of the projector. Also thank you to Fern for the dairy workshop. Highway clean up is Saturday, May 3. We will be cleaning the 561, east towards Hussar where we will meet up with the Hussar 4-H club for lunch. Good luck to Billi and Marshall this weekend at the Provincial Communication competition. There will be one more meeting on May 5 at the Crowfoot Hall.

ON GODS TRAIL I recently had the privilege of going to the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Mountains in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. This place is really a complex of seven canyons covering an area four times the size of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and in some places is actually deeper. About 500 years ago the Spanish Conquistadors pressured the people living in the surrounding plains areas to ee into the recesses of the canyon. They have lived very primitive lives ever since. Most literally live in caves or crude huts. Life is hard there, especially for women and children. It is very difcult to grow food there, and modern society has largely forgotten them. For the past number of years our church has been helping some Mexican friends who have been serving these people, called the Tarahumara. You may have heard of their athletic exploits in a bestselling book called Born To Run by Christopher McDougall. They can run for days on these trails wearing crude sandals made from old tires and leather straps. Their endurance and speed matches the Kenyans. On the day we were set to pass out

Curves feeds the need

JANA KOPP Curves of Strathmore For the past three weeks, Curves Strathmore invited both non-members and members to take part in the March Food Drive by bringing in a bag of non-perishable food or a monetary contribution of at least $30 to be donated to the Wheatland County Food Bank. All new members who made a food or monetary donation received a $0 service fee when joining Curves as either a Fitness or Curves Complete member. Once again we were honored to offer the Curves Food Drive as a unique way for the community to come together and feed the need of local food banks while simultaneously feeding the need for womens health and tness, said Jana Kopp of Curves of Strathmore. This year, donations topped 600 pounds of food and over $140 in cash donation which will benet Wheatland County Food Bank. Curves Complete Coach Brenda Graff happily handed over the food to the food bank volunteers. Now in its 16th year, the Curves Food Drive has gathered and donated more than 75 million lbs. of food to benet local community food banks. Over the past 14 years, Curves members have proudly participated in the annual Curves Food Drive for Strathmore and area residents. food, they began to appear wearing very bright colorful clothing, at the least the women did. They still wear the traditional dress. The men wear jeans, button down shirts, and sandals. The mothers carry their babies in wraps in their backs. Most have walked for hours to get there. Even young children can travel on foot at speeds that would challenge even the best conditioned of us. I saw a very small, elderly man put a 100-pound bag of beans on his back and go straight up a steep trail and out of site. On my last day there I hiked out down to the river and up the other side of the canyon. It was about a 3,000-foot elevation gain. As I doggedly worked my way up that trail, I thought of these dear people who travel weekly for miles and miles in that environment, seeking survival. I hoped that they would know there are some who have not forgotten them, that there are people who care, who even love them. SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Strathmore Musical Arts Society is once again bringing a top-notch act to our community. PEAR, a Calgary based country music duo, will be coming to Strathmore on April 26. There is also once again an early bird draw: anyone who buys their tickets before April 19 will have their name entered into a draw for a $250 gift certicate for the Rocking R Ranch and two tickets to Rosebud Theatre. They opened for Johnny Reid at his Christmas concert that was here, said Linda Storkson, president of the Musical Arts Society. It should be good fun. Husband and wife Lynae and Denis Dufresne make up the PEAR band, and they are excited to be coming to Strathmore. We always like playing close to home. Thats one of the hard parts about touring is just not being home, its going to be great to be out in Strathmore because were close to Calgary and we get to reach out to a new community. We always enjoys building our audiences, especially close to home, said Denis Dufresne. Lynae and I are doing an acoustic show that night. We have travelled around the world and we tell stories about our travels and our music is pretty upbeat and energetic and its kind of a family show so it is good for all ages and we have our storytelling songs but then we also have high energy instrumentals and things like that so it is a good time. The couple had met in 1997 when they joined Barrage, one of the most successful ddle shows in the world. Denis had come from Medicine Hat and Lynae from Sandpoint, Idaho. Within the rst nine months the two had started dating and it wasnt long before they married. The duo eventually decided to take some time off from touring the world, and start a family. About six months after their son was born they both began getting calls about gigs, and off they went again. We just werent seeing each other anymore so we formed PEAR in about 2006 and we didnt really get serious about it until about 2001, once we put our time into it, now the family gets to stay together which is pretty awesome, said Denis.

Rosebud School of the Arts sings at spring concert

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor Rosebud never disappoints in their performances as was seen and heard again on the evening of April 6as four choirs sang in spring. The Rosebud Chorale, made up of students from the arts school, began their performance with a Carly Simon song Let the River Run followed by two other numbers Do You Feel the Rhythm? by Greg Gilpin, and Come Away, with words and music by Janis Pierson, all under the direction of Director Bill Hamm. The Rosebud Younger Company has been performing for a number of years now and they presented Adventures in Camping The Good, The Bad and The Hilarious under the direction of Anita Winters and David Snider. The campers brought the audience back to memories of old camp songs and youth experiences including such rivalries of boys versus girls. Anita Winters has also been working hard at expanding the range of music with some of the younger members. Keziah Berg (descant soloist), Brogan Ohlhauser, Eleanor Ohlhauser and Katie Winters sang Seek Ye First by Karen Lafferty and Alleluia by Mozart. The Rosebud Chorale came back to sing three more numbers before Rosa Cantorum took the stage. The Cantorum graced the audience with Mass No.6 of the Kyrie and Sanctus by Gyorgi Orban, Psalm 23 by Srul Irving Glick, Gamelan by R. Murray Schafer and Eric Claptons Tears in Heaven. The Rosebuds Masterworks choir performed If With All Your Hearts (Mendelssohn), Thou Must Leave Thy Holy Dwelling (Berlioz), Bogoroditse Devo (Rachmaninoff), and lastly, one of Brahms How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place from a German Requiem. The combined choirs of the Rosebud Chorale, Rosa Cantorum and Masterworks concluded the evening singing en mass George Frederick Handels Hallelujah, Amen from Judas Maccabeus. A time of fellowship and visiting with the performers followed the evenings performance.

Cadaver plant blooms in Wheatland County

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A botanists dream plant is here in Wheatland County. Viggo Sorensen, a plant enthusiast, owns an amorphophallus konjac, and this year it has bloomed, which is a rare event. Amorphophallus konjac is native to warm regions such as Malaysia and Indonesia, and can even be found growing in ditches in China. There are two breeds of the amorphophallus, the konjac and the titanum.The konjac, when it owers, is a single bloom on a stalk, no leaves surrounding it. Its one of those plants you can grow it normally in your house forever and it never blooms, but it says on the internet somewhere that if it blooms then you have done something annoyingly right, either the water was warmer or the light was different or the soil was different, said Sorensen. We dont know what was done right when you nally get one that blooms, but this bloom here will just knock you off your feet. The konjac rst came to his family in the late 1940s, early 50s. His aunt had met a sailor, whom she befriended. Before he was to set sail again he gave Sorensens aunt an amorphophallus konjac bulb to remember him by. Each year the bulb would sprout up into a single leaf tree, lled with numerous leaets, but would never ower. Now, something Sorensen is doing right has made his plant ower for the past two years, and while it is unbelievable and a sight to behold, it comes at a cost. The plant smells strongly of rotting meat, a smell that can permeate an entire household. Fortunately, when the plant does bloom into a ower is only lasts for a week or less. It smells so bad this plant, it stinks. As beautiful and rare as this thing is it is the most stinking thing you ever smelled, thank God it only lasts three days with that smell, said Sorensen. The konjac stalk was 28 inches, and the bloom measured at another 24 inches, and Sorensen said while it was growing the plant would gain three inches a day in height. One of the most interesting things about the plant is it grows from just a fairly small in comparison to the plant size- bulb. Approximately 10 years ago the Sorensens had donated a bulb to the Calgary Zoo botanical garden. They are waiting to hear if the plant was lost in the ood and if so they do plan to donate another bulb. Seeing, and smelling, the strangely beautiful ower can be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Oops-a-Dazy looking for community support

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Oops-a-Dazy pet Rescue and Sanctuary Society is celebrating 10 years this August and is also looking for community support. The sanctuary has been struggling to get back in the red since the June ood. They nished the year with a $26,000 loss, and in January alone the vet bills were $50,000. One of the fundraisers happening now is the sale of Coco Brooks pizza and goodies. A product form and order form can be found at www.oopsadazy.com. Orders can be placed until April 20 and pick up is for May 5. We had a really tough year in 2013, we had just unprecedented numbers. We have a safekeeping program that has been historically used for very short-term crisis situations, often people eeing domestic abuse, maybe short-term emergencies like a house re, that sort of thing, temporary periods of homelessness, said Christine Campbell, chairperson on the board of directors for the society. Back in June, as everyone knows, there was massive, catastrophic ooding throughout the province and that led to over 100,000 people being evacuated and a lot of those people ended up not being able to go back to those homes. We had a very large inux of animals come in, in the rst two days of the ood, we placed 75 dogs into foster homes. To date (March 28) we still have nine animals in safekeeping and several dozen more have just gone home over the last month or two. So we have had a very long term issue with our safekeeping program being completely full and then some. Campbell said typically theres room for up to ve animals in safekeeping and most of last year there were a couple dozen. Oops-aDazy doesnt have an actual shelter at this point; they are foster home-based, which has its pluses and minuses. The advantages of being in foster homes is each animal gets to know what it is like to be in a home and to know what a family is like and they end up getting better adoptability out of it, they learn better manners out of living in a home and that kind of thing, said Campbell. A shelter, particularly older ones, can be depressing places, lots of concrete and metal, bars and almost prison-like. Campbell said that is often what some people think of when their rst thought is about rescuing an animal and not all shelters are like that. Because of the increased number of animals needing help, and the amount of animals with injuries or illnesses, Oops-a-Dazy has not been able to get ahead yet, and while the scope of the problems are changing and the sanctuary is back to helping mainly abused and abandoned animals, Campbell said there is no sign of things slowing down anytime soon. It set us back so far that were really trying to fundraise to get caught up and to get a little bit ahead so that we know what funds we have available for those animals, said Campbell. She said when they take in an animal they make a lifetime commitment to them and they want to be sure they can sustain that. The sanctuary charges an adoption fee for a number of reasons; one is quality of ownership because people do seem to value what they pay for, but they also include all of the basic care, spaying, neutering, micro-chipping, vaccinating, de-worming and they also get one month free pet insurance. Those basic costs are involved with every single animal that we rescue and our adoption fee essentially just covers those costs. So anytime we have an additional veterinary bill, as well as some of the administrative costs involved in keeping the rescue going, all of those have to come above and beyond, said Campbell. All administrative costs are published to the Oops-a-Dazy website and they try to keep it as low as they can. All of their staff are volunteers, no one holds a paid position, and they have great partnerships with their vets who give the biggest discounts that they can. ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore High School Spartans hosted badminton counties against Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) and Standard High School on April 2. Roughly 50-60 students participated in the event, with approximately 90 per cent of Spartan players advancing to zones. Strathmore denitely had the most players going into it, Spartans coach Kenton Zandee said. It looked good but I was very impressed with some of the teams from HCC and Standard. They beat our guys out for spots and they deserved to. They came up big that day. For counties and zones, students declare either singles, doubles, or mixed, and can only play that one event. Zandee says some of his players may have played potential zones opponents before in tournaments this season, but he will have to examine some of his competition rst hand come April 12 in Olds. Its always a bit of an enigma because you dont know whos going to be there, because a lot of the teams dont necessarily play tournaments, but they could be very good players. We just dont see them, Zandee said. You have to go into zones thinking that everyone is going to be good, and not underestimate your opponent. The Spartans traveled to Lethbridge from April 4-5 for an exhibition tournament, as preparation for zones. Coincidentally, should his players advance at zones, they will return to Lethbridge for provincials from May 2-3.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Wheatland Athletic Association hosted their awards night from this years hockey season on April 4, honouring the peewee Braves, the bantam Warriors, and midget Chiefs, with many multiple winners. The Braves Tarun Fizer was named team MVP. He was also awarded top scorer after earning 52 points in 36 games, nishing in the leagues Top 20. Fizers coach Keith Klemmensen mentioned he was one of his most consistent players. Amongst the forwards, he would have been the highest level guy we had at that position, Klemmensen said. Cole Clayton, bantam MVP, was also named top defenseman. Coach Mark Laycock spoke of his ability to do a little bit of everything on the ice: Hes a strong defender and has an ability offensively thats pretty tough to teach it just comes natural to him. Hes good at being able to take over a game from the back end sometimes, which is a big key. Claytons teammate Ryan Bell was given the Kletzel Memorial Award for the Warriors for the second year in a row. It goes to a guy thats a leader, and is a good sport the guy on your team that everybody looks to lead by example, Laycock said. Hes the type of kid that coaches just love to have on their team. Hes the denition of a leader and a good quality kid. For the peewee Braves, Connor Bertamini received the Kletzel Award, for being an on-ice and off-ice leader, al-
ways delivering his best. He takes constructive criticism as it is met, which is to help with mistakes, Klemmensen said of Bertamini. He understands that patience runs short sometimes with people if news isnt delivered in a sugar-coated way, he gets it, hes a tough kid. I dont think I can recall a time in two years when he was lazy he was maybe nervous, but he was never lazy. Coltyn Herman, top scorer for the midget Chiefs with 47 points in 32 games, was also named Most Sportsmanlike. Teammate Cody Willis took home the Exemplary Player Award. An award means a lot to a kid, Laycock said. I remember winning a few awards when I was younger, and it makes you feel pretty good that you had a successful season.

Thunder-storming back
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Having made it all the way to Western Canadian Finals last season, the U18 Strathmore Thunder are moving up to Alevel this year, and have been preparing for this springs rst pitch. Thats the top level. The goal this year is to go to Nationals, coach Lanky Johnson said. The Thunder girls have three other competitive squads U16, U14, and U12 alongside two community U12 teams. All play out of Calgary. The competitive ones are the ones that look at going to Provincials. The community ones are more of training its more of a stepping stone, Johnson said. As for the U18s, six are returning to the 14-girl roster. Many of the players are active athletes, playing other sports competitively, with all-around skill. Right now, our strength probably comes from the overall athletic ability of the team, Johnson said. It makes it a lot easier. Its one of the biggest advantages. The team has been training since September a few times a month, and continued throughout the winter. In February, the girls began training once a week for their rst game in the CWFA Womens Division 1 on April 29. Following their season opener,

Strathmore will be hosting their annual Mothers Day Weekend Tournament, featuring 20 teams including their U16 counterpart. The U18s will play in the open division bracket with the senior women, and their own age groups. Following the summer, many of Johnsons girls will be looking at schools for their fast-pitch futures. We have a few that in this age group now are looking at scholarship opportunities, he said. Given that competitive edge for the groups that we go with, for them, if they do nd that real passion for the game, this is hopefully a stepping stone to continue on their education.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Numbers are consistent from last year for Strathmore Minor Baseball roughly 225 for the Strathmore Reds boys, and 90 for the Strathmore Thunder girls. However, President Daren Kennett says that Strathmore is doing much stronger than the larger city centres. Strathmores got about 12,000 people, roughly. About 315 kids play ball here, he said. If you took that on a per capita basis and compared it to Calgary, a city of 1.2 million people, theyre basically 100 times larger than Strathmore, and should have about 31,500 kids playing. Instead, Calgary has roughly 3,000 kids enrolled in fastpitch and baseball. This makes ball in Strathmore about 10 times larger. I think its a bigger part of culture in Strathmore. Its good skill and good organization, Kennett said. Under the Strathmore Minor Baseball umbrella, there are house-league teams, Baseball Alberta AA teams, and a boys midget AAA team that will be playing strictly tournaments. The AAAs will be traveling to Alaska and Montana this summer. Some of the teams have been training in the gym since January girls and boys, Kennett said. Theyve been doing various basic skill developments elding, pitching, hitting. The mosquito Reds won Tier 2 Provincials last year. The league begins mid-April for most teams the midget AAA boys have their rst tournament in Medicine Hat on April 6 and nishes in July.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter STARS Volleyball is back for another year, teaching kids the fundamentals of the sport, while having a good time on the court. Coach Pat Fules spring season began on March 17 at Wheatland Elementary School, and will continue into May for three groups: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-5, and Grades 6-9. They have similar drills, but you can expand them in the third (oldest) session, Fule said. There are some drills in the third session that the younger ones couldnt do its a little bit different. All three sessions are taught to hit the same way; however, the younger kids use a bigger, softer ball, and a lower net, typically for badminton. The older kids practice more of the positions within the sport. The younger ones, we keep it really simple, but they still learn how to set, and bump, serve, hit and block, Fule said. We still keep the badminton courts, so that they can cover the court easier and cover the ball more. Once a week, the groups have their hour session half hour of skills and fun games, followed by the second half hour of 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 games. The idea is that theyll get better the more they handle the ball. Sometimes if youre on a team of six, you may not touch the ball very much at all, Fule said. Helping coach the 20 kids in each group, are students from Strathmore High School and Holy Cross Collegiate. They really help to keep the game going along. Theyre able to set the kids up to jump for a hit, Fule said.
Roughly 60 kids are taking part in the spring session of STARS Volleyball. Grades 1-3, 4-5, and 6-9 practice fundamentals once a week at Wheatland Elementary with the help of Strathmore High School volunteer coaches. Fule is also running a spring break camp beginning April 21, playing two different sports each morning. Its not as much skill its more along the lines of showing them how to play the sport. Theyll do things like kickball, oor hockey, and indoor soccer, he said. As for STARS, Fule hopes to inspire his students to gain a love for the sport at a young age. I really want them to go away and have enjoyed themselves so much, that they cant wait for the next session to start up, he said.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Wheatland Athletic Association (WAA) hosted their annual 3-on-3 Tournament for peewees and bantams from April 5-6 at the Family Centre, keeping it competitive but enjoyable on the ice. Its a bit of a scrambley game, because its a big ice and theres not many kids out there. But this gives kids the opportunity to have fun at the end of the year, WAA President Sandy Henry said. Were not there trying to recruit kids or evaluate. Its just so they know were there. It gives them some familiarity with who we are were here, and think about us next fall when its time to come and try out. The WAA took several entries from their draw area, randomized them, and built six teams of bantams and four teams of peewees with roughly eight players per squad. Some of these players may have already been playing for the Wheatland Braves or Warriors. One team might have kids from the AA level right down to Tier 5, and theyll be all mixed together on a team, Henry said. It gives kids the opportunity to see what some of those other guys look like. More so, it expands their social group, and maybe in the future they might be teammates as well. The winners for each age group took home customized jerseys, while the runner-ups were awarded medallions.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Robin Navin and her family in Strathmore will be rst timers for the Canadian Cancer Societys Relay for Life on June 6 at Wheatland Elementary School. Navin, team captain of For Petes Sake, is heading up her team of 14 for her late brother-in-law Peter, who was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 30. During his ten-year battle, Peter went through ve surgeries, only to be told in January 2013 that nothing more could be done. At that time, my husband and I, we decided that we had to be really honest with our two young children about what was going on. We didnt want them to resent us in the future for not having time to prepare, Navin said. We told them. My son was eight. He said to me Is there anything we can do for Uncle Peter? and I said No, theres nothing more anybody can do. He responded, Well, is there anything else we can do for other peoples uncles? Navin began to search through different fundraising events for cancer research but ones that her kids could help with for their uncle, too. Peter himself participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer for four years before he passed. The last year he was alive, he actually had to go in a car, and then wheel himself across the nish line his whole left side was paralyzed, Navin said. My kids have always known Uncle Peter did that, so its good that were trying to make up for what he cant do. That also is the teams motto: we walk because Peter cant anymore. Peter passed in October 2013. For Petes Sake has reached $4,000 of their original $5,000 goal. However, Navin is now considering Peters last contribution to the Ride to Conquer Cancer, of roughly $8,000. It would be really good if we could raise the amount that he did last year, she said. So much crappy stuff is associated with cancer. Its just really important for us to have a good day raise

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra Gail Barnett, after losing a lengthy battle to Leukemia, with her family by her side. Sandra is survived by her husband Bill Barnett of Strathmore; her three children Christine (Shane) Pallesen of Strathmore, Kevin (Yuki Sato) Barnett of Calgary, and Dale (Robyn) Barnett of Strathmore; numerous grandchildren Kaley (David Hofer) Sokolik, Wace Pallesen, Jaron and Kyan Barnett, Tate, Cohen, Makaela, and Reeve Barnett; great grandchild Adam Hofer; two sisters Carolyn (Frank) Siebert of Strathmore, and Judy (Brian) Rohl of Qualicum Bay, B.C.; sister in laws Marian (Eddie) Haskayne of Calgary and Ethel Barnett of Rockyview; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sandra was born to the late Clifford and Clara Isom of Lyalta, She graduated from Samuel Crowther High School where she met the love of her life Bill Barnett. Sandra and Bill were married on March 22, 1968. They settled in the Crowfoot community were they continued the family farming tradition and later started the family feedlot. You could nd Sandra nursing a sick calf back to health or working in one of her numerous ower beds usually with at least one grandchild at her side. Sandra was an active member of the church and Crowfoot community and will be remembered for her kind and loving nature. It was Sandras wish that a funeral service not be held, instead a donation be made to the University of Calgary, Hematology Research and Education Fund- Account RT69452300000 (Michelle Hubbs-Felder, Division of Hematology, Foothills Medical Centre, Rm C210 Main Building, 1403 - 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB., T2N 2T9) A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Richard James (RJ)

On April 2, 2014 Richard James Donald passed away at the age of 64 years in Strathmore, Alberta. He was predeceased by his father James Donald, and mother Margaret Gazloff. RJ is survived by his loving spouse Brenda Salik; two children Shawn and Jeff Donald, both of Brooks, Alberta; and his grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Ron (Maureen) Donald of Medicine Hat, Alberta; Jean Donald of Brooks, Alberta; Larry (Tina) Donald of Brooks, Alberta; Keith (Kim) Donald of Medicine Hat, Alberta; Brenda Bourgeult (Rick) of Edmonton, Alberta; Michele Chelsberg (Perry) of Edmonton, Alberta; Dwayne Gazloff (Denise) of Edmonton, Alberta; and Earl (Tatjana) Donald of Calgary, Alberta. RJ will also be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and many friends. Some things I know or have heard about in the last 100 years, by Myrna Phillips/Szakaly/Gehrke
My Grandfather, C.A Phillips arrived from Michigan in 1908 with daughter Jessie, her husband Fred Dalton and two carpenters. A two storey, ve bedroom house was built on the farmstead three miles west of Carseland, just north of where the C.P.R. railroad line is now. My Grandmother Nettie arrived by train in Langdon in the spring of 1909 with four of their seven children in tow. My dad Max Phillips the youngest was two years old. While travelling from the east, six year old Wilbur Phillips wandered away, when the train stopped in Regina. The train left and had to back up to get him on board again. Jessie & Fred Dalton remained in the area for several years as did Alicia who became Mrs. Hugh Hebbes. Leland & Catherine Phillips bought the land that later belonged to Bill & Eleanor Taylor. Leland owned and operated Phillips Motors in Strathmore for some years. Duane and Wilbur took up farming in Eckville and Onaway. Wendell became a school teacher. He studied at Prairie Bible Institute and spent thirteen years as a missionary in China. Max married Grace Ostrom in March 1935. Now we had two sets of grandparents within four miles. At both farms we learned to milk cows, ride horses and drive trucks. Max & Grace lived with my Grandma & Grandpa Phillips until their passing in 1938 and 1944, respectively. By this time the family consisted of Myrna, born in 1936, Elva in 1937, Donna in 1940, Lee in 1944 and Terry in 1954. During these years we truly enjoyed time with close cousins such as the Daltons, Garnetts, Ostroms, Masons & Gilberts. Margaret Gilbert and Lily Mason were Moms sisters and of course Paul their only brother.

You may not be the only one moving on any given day especially when you live in a larger building. There are also preparations needing to be made to the interior of the elevator to prevent damage. When you purchased your condo, you most likely had a review done of the existing documents, and probably have received further documents from your Board. The Board sends out copies of the Annual General Meetings along with Budgets and Insurance Certificates. Some also provide the Monthly Meeting Minutes. These need to be kept for the whole time you own your condo. Keep them organized in a file/binder so as when you go to sell, they can easily be provided to your buyer. If you need to contact management for replacement documents, as it is a requirement of the Seller to provide the information to the Buyer, it may cost you upwards of $300.
