Remember to dress yourself and your equipment
properly for the winter months

inter is finally here. Is everyone

jumping for joy? I didnt think so.
Its that time of year when
those working in the Bakken and Marcellus
Shale plays and the oil sands of Canada
need to start thinking about their winterweather safety tips. Winter especially
in these regions can bring bitterly cold
temperatures as low as negative 60 degrees
Fahrenheit (negative 51 Celsius).
Cold weather, harsh wind and

working outside in the wet and frozen stuff
is not for the faint of heart, says Harvey
Markiewicz, a Bakken oilfield worker.
According to the American Society
of Safety Engineers and the American
Petroleum Institute, its important to keep
moisture management in mind when
working in cold weather. Whatever is worn
should be adjustable so it doesnt get soaked
either from sliding off the road in a blinding

blizzard or just plain drifting snow.
Some things to keep in mind when you
are traveling:
Keep your fuel tank full at all times
Carry a case of bottled water with
you
Carry extra blankets in the vehicle,
along with flares, tire chains and
food

Wool, neoprene and
gortex are all good things.
One example of an outfit for
the cold weather could be a
neoprene cold weather face
mask, fur-lined leather gloves,
a good pair of leather boots
and a pair of waterproof boots
for when you are walking in
8-inch deep freezing water.
Dont forget those long
johns; theyll keep you nice
and warm.
Dressing for the cold
weather isnt the only
precaution you should take.
Making sure you are ready
for vehicle emergencies is a
must as well, according to
Markiewicz. There is a very
real risk of being snowed into
your vehicle while traveling,
dress for the weather and how to care for

their equipment in the weather.
C Company keeps all of the hoses on
its hydroexcavators wrapped and heated,
and also heats the debris tanks to prevent
materials from freezing and damaging the
equipment.
There are several folks living in the
Bakken Shale play who need help getting
that winter weather clothing, especially
if they are just moving into the area and
are low on funds. In our Bakken Extra
this month, we tell you about a couple
living in western North Dakota who have
started a thrift shop to help oilfield workers
in that area. One of the biggest needs for
the Bakken Oil Rush Ministry is winter
clothing, and the husband-and-wife duo
can be found distributing that clothing
several times a year.

C Company proves its value to Bakken clientele by providing year-round
services and unwavering safety practices

eth Church, his family and partners all

decided to use the experience of working in
the cold weather to expand their company
and start up operations in the Bakken Shale
play in North Dakota.
C Company, up until 2011, had only
been operating in the Alaskan play, but Church decided it was time
to take advantage of the Bakken oil boom and expand into the region.
He saw big opportunities and a lack of competition in the regions
hydroexcavation services.
I thought they really needed a dedicated provider so we
committed ourselves to being that solution and providing quality
hydroexcavation service in the Bakken, Church says.
Church, along with his family and business partners Kevin
Karella and Andrew Rossow, opened C Companys Williston
operations in 2011. What began as a one-truck operation has now
turned into 30 employees providing 24/7 service throughout the
Bakken with nine trucks.
For a company like ours to come to this area with one truck and
only one customer, and today here we sit with nine trucks and master
service agreements with over 65 percent of the producers here in the
Bakken, is astounding, says Darrin Kittelson, director of operations
for C Company. The proof is in the pudding. We went from the little
guy on the block to one of the bigger hydroexcavation firms here.
The company does everything from potholing and exposing
underground utilities all the way to cleaning rigs and oil spills.
Anything you can do with a hydroexcavator, were currently
doing, Kittelson says. Hydroexcavators are very versatile pieces of
equipment and we cover a lot of different types of work.
PREPARING FOR THE WEATHER

Cold-weather experience has helped fuel C Companys success
in North Dakota, allowing the company to pick up jobs that others
arent equipped to handle.
In winter, the supply side of service changes in the Bakken,
says Dave Long, general manager for C Company. There are a lot
of companies that either arent prepared or just arent willing to face
winter conditions so theyll head out and come back in the summer.

C Company vehicles are equipped for the cold

weather that North Dakota sees each winter.
Every truck owned by C Company has its hoses
wrapped and heated and the water inside the
tanks is constantly recirculating to keep it from
freezing. There are hot-water heaters on the
trucks as well.
As a result, C Company picks up more oil spill jobs in the winter months
when the number of responders decreases. Long says they take pride in those
jobs because they allow them to show clients the thoroughness of their work.
They make sure the scene is always cleaner when they leave than it was before
the spill.
We realized early on that this is a dangerous work

environment; we need to be leaders in the field of safety
from the very top level of management to the guys
sweeping the floors and weve put a premium on safety.

Dealing with cold temperatures can be tough on employees and
equipment, so the company has set up training seminars for dealing with the
extreme elements. Kittelson says supervisors in the field are training employees
on a daily basis in addition to the training
that takes place at the companys facilities.
Youre training your operators to
protect themselves and the equipment
in the cold, Kittelson says. We are
constantly implementing new training
and awareness about how we operate
in subzero temperatures and how it can
affect our day.
Personnel are taught how to dress for
winter, Kittelson says. Employees have
to pay more attention to what they wear
to work, making sure they are layered
up, but not dressed so heavily that
they overheat.

A good comparison for the weather here would be watering your lawn
when its 60 below outside and windy. Thats what our operators face on a
daily basis, Kittelson says. Were dealing with water in some really poor
weather conditions.
Weather is also a big factor in equipment decisions. In the winter
months, North Dakota can be blasted with heavy snowfall and can experience
temperatures as cold as minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit. You just need extreme
technology and extreme weather protection, Church says.

FROM HOME
CONSTRUCTION
TO THE OILFIELDS
C Company didnt start off servicing the
oilfields of Alaska or North Dakota. The company
originally built homes in Alaska.
Nels Church, along with a business partner,
started a general residential contracting company
in 1968. During the following years they built
pre-cut and prefabricated homes throughout
Alaska. In 1984, Nels and another partner formed
C Company Inc. with the primary purpose of
performing public and private commercial
work, performing jobs in remote areas of Alaska
requiring precise and detailed planning and
oversight.
In 2000, Seth Church, with the assistance
of his father, Nels, started building speculation
homes. After five years they decided to once
again enter the commercial market. C Company
renovated and assembled a 200-capacity crew
camp for Pioneer Oil, and an office complex and
crew camp for ENI Petroleum on the North Slope.
I started with my family building houses
when I was 17, Church says. We were in the
construction field and moved into doing some oil
and gas services. There was a steep learning curve
transitioning from home construction to oilfield
services. However, we found the same principles
of customer service, quality of work and safe work
practices were true in both industries.
Through its Alaska division, C Company
offers a variety of oilfield services.
Our Alaska division offers hydroexcavation,
spill cleanups, trenching, daylighting and tank
cleans, Church says. We also offer freight and
equipment transport in Alaska and stateside.

C Company utilizes hydroexcavators from

two different manufacturers: Vactor and Super
Products. The company has both Guzzlers and
HXXs from Vactor, while on the Super Products
side they run Mud Dogs.
All of the trucks are equipped with large
freshwater tanks, Hotsy industrial pressure
washers and isolated debris tanks that allow
for proper disposal of hazardous waste.
Church says about 60 percent of their
trucks are Vactors and 40 percent are Super
Products. The newest Super Products hydroexcavator arrived at the shop in October.
Weve got some of the most cutting edge
technology as far as cold weather that Vactor has ever done, Church says.
Were talking directly with Vactor and Super Products on a regular basis and
communicating our needs. Weve had the president of Vactor in my pickup
truck with his product developer riding along for a couple of days just showing
them what our specific needs are, and theyre making changes so that they can
take care of us so we can take care of our customers.
C Company also wraps and heats the hoses on the trucks. There are hotwater heaters on the trucks and the water in the tanks is constantly recirculated
to keep it from freezing.
Were here to work. Were here to provide a service, and if you

need it at 3 a.m., we better be ready or we need to go home.

We obviously set up our equipment to operate and were going above
and beyond what most people have to do with their equipment, Kittelson
says. If we run out of water we may have just caused major damage to our
equipment, whereas people in fair weather dont have to deal with these types
of issues.
When the weather isnt so brutal, C Company is mainly cleaning rigs and
hydroexcavating for utilities, Long says.
BUSY CREWS
C Company has crews working in the oilfields 24 hours a day, every day
of the week in every season of the year.
Were here to work. Were here to provide a service, and if you need it at
3 a.m., we better be ready or we need to go home, Long says, adding that he
often tells his crews they can call at any time of night if they need him. Im the
general manager, but they can call me anytime to help them work.
Many jobs present tough safety challenges, including confined-space entries, hazardous chemicals and complicated equipment, and C Company puts
a big emphasis on work site safety.
We go all the way down to the job level. Job Safety Analysis [JSA] is
something we perform on each and every job, Long says. Our team on
the job is prepped before they ever leave the shop, when they get to the site
and after.
Before leaving for a job site, crews discuss potential safety hazards at the
site theyll be servicing. Once they are on site theyll meet again and take a

look at all the safety hazards and discuss those. Following the work, the crews
will meet again and talk over what hazards they saw, what they were able to
mitigate, what they were able to control and what they could eliminate.
They put that all down on paper and we talk about it when they come
back to the shop, Long says.
The company also holds weekly behavioral management safety meetings
where the safety officers review the JSAs and do spot checks on jobs to see how
employees are performing.
Were looking at whether theyre following the rules, whether things
could be done better, and we bring those back to the office and talk about
those in our regular meetings and try to change our safety culture for the better
every day and every week, Long says.
Church notes one particular job they handled in August took the
confined-space safety program to a whole new level they hadnt seen in
the Bakken.
It was a stretch for us, we had to bring up our game as far as safety, he
says. We realized early on that this is a dangerous work environment; we need
to be leaders in the field of safety from the very top level of management to the
guys sweeping the floors and weve put a premium on safety.
EXPANSION COMING UP
Church would like to see his company expand in the region, but that will
depend in large part on how long it takes the company to train employees.
First and foremost, our growth is predicated on the success of our performance and where were doing work, Church says. We would like to see continued work in the Bakken, the North Slope in Alaska, as well as Wyoming. We
would like to move into Wyoming and then perhaps Colorado; that would be
within the next three years. Wed like to see some solid but attainable growth.
Long says hed like to see the company grow, just like they have been,
adding trucks each year.

im Konsor saw the ups and downs of

the Bakken oilfields every day.
I was living in a fifth wheel like
a lot of the other people are and heard a
lot of stories about people moving out here
and trying to get a fresh start, Konsor says.
Theres a lot of personal pain, some was

financial and some was relational.
Konsor remembers walking down
Watford City, N.D., streets after work and
seeing all the people who needed help.
I would just pray for the town and the
churches and said, Lord, is there some way
to help? Konsor says.
Konsor and his wife, Kathie, had
been involved in ministry work for much
of their lives. One day after church in their
hometown of Watertown, S.D., they were
talking with the pastor and expressed
interest in getting back into ministry.
The pastor did some checking with the
North and South Dakota United Methodist
Conference and found that they were

thrift store to serve the rapidly growing
population.

any money to go out and buy new stuff
because everything is real expensive here,
Konsor says.
Setting up the thrift store proved to be
a difficult task right from the start.
We couldnt find a building because
everything was so terribly expensive,
Konsor says. An old grocery store on Main
Street that sold out to a bigger company put
its old building up for sale. They wanted
a million dollars for that building, so that
wasnt going to work.
The Konsors decided it was time
to move in a different direction, so they

in motion.
We visited with them and said it
would be good to go up there and do an
assessment, talking to pastors and people
from the city to see what they feel the needs
are, Konsor says. So he and his wife traveled

purchased a 29-foot toy hauler, took out the

beds and dressers and installed shelves and
hanging rods. They were then able to get the
churches in the conference to collect items
for them.
We spoke to as many churches as we
could, Konsor says. We were setting up
when the food pantry was open. We were
setting up in church parking lots.
They began operation of the traveling
thrift store in August 2013 and had their
first coat giveaway in November. Konsor
says 90 coats were given away in that first
event, but overall during the winter months
a total of 265 coats along with snow pants,
boots, hoodies, blankets and heaters were given out to oilfield workers.
Were open on a weekly basis, not every day, but its my wife and I
basically, Konsor says. We have to sort and clean and go through the things
we can and cant use. We go out and speak at some of the churches in the
conference and locally to keep the people aware of what were doing.
Sorting and cleaning the items has proven to be a challenge due to the lack
of space available for the ministry. They use one end of a local church basement
to store items, but it isnt big enough to sort everything so the Konsors take it
out of the basement and bring it over to another church where they make a
donation and use their fellowship hall.
We sort the items there and then we have to
rebag everything and either take it back to the first
basement or now we have two storage sheds for
clothing and different things, Konsor says. Were
constantly moving things and everything we do is
extra work.
In winter, the main task is just trying to get the
travel trailer warm because they set it up in church
parking lots. With a furnace that isnt able to keep up,
Konsor has had to run extra heaters, including a fishhouse heater, to help get the temperature up so people
can come in and look for the things they need.
We dont specify that you have to be an oilfield
worker to get help, but a majority of them are oilfield
workers, Konsor says, adding that 65 percent of the
people who come through are first-timers. We have
people sign up when they come in and give ages and
addresses if they have them. Most dont have them
because theyre just living in RVs.
GATHERING PLACE
With no building to call their own, the Bakken
Oil Rush Ministry has found other ways to house
community gatherings, including using area parks and
the fellowship halls of other churches.
The Konsors have already held several events,
including a pre-Labor Day picnic in August. They also
sponsored a Sidewalk Sunday School for four days in
August that drew about a dozen kids.
Our heart is to help the people that are less
fortunate. Its easy to do stuff that is nice and easy
and say come to us, but its another thing to go out
there and hear peoples stories and be willing to get
involved, Konsor says. Theres a fulfillment in
knowing that were touching people and helping them
on the very basic human need side, which a lot of
times opens them up to share their story and what
they need help with and how theyre hurting.
Konsor, who is now an appointed local licensed
pastor, will also pray with people who just need
encouragement.
Most of them left their family somewhere else
and they dont have any kind of support system there
and to know that theres somebody that wants to hear
their story and will listen and will do what they can
helps, Konsor says.
UNCERTAIN FUTURE
Konsor has big plans for the future, but nothing is for certain. Finding a
building is still a top priority. He says they had drawings for a building even
before they went up to the Watford City area.
We would have four rooms that could be used short-term like hotel
rooms for three or four days while people are figuring out what they need to
do, Konsor says. The cheapest motel I know of is $169 a night and they run
up to $220 for a basic motel. People are coming into town and theyre broke.

Konsor would like to see construction begin by next summer, but there is
one major obstacle to clear first.
The funding needs to come, he says. When we started this, the
conference challenged all of the churches, saying they wanted to start this
ministry in the oilfields and challenged them to bring an offering. They were
hoping to raise $100,000.
Instead, the call brought in $262,000, which surprised a lot of the
conference member churches.
It made them realize there is a need, but everything up there is so
expensive and the money is going fast because its not just our ministry, Konsor
says. They wanted to add a staff person in Williston and they were doing

some extra work in Dickinson. The money is being used and its not being
replenished. We go out to speak at churches and they take some offerings, but
its not keeping up with whats going out. We are getting concerned about how
this is going to be funded by next summer.
In the meantime, however, Konsor says the Bakken Oil Rush Ministry will
continue to do what theyve always done help those in need.
The community has been very supportive, Konsor says. People in the
community donate lots of things. We get a number of calls every week wanting
to bring things down. We try to be specific and we have a needs list on our
website that tells people the things were looking for. GOMC

Maintaining dewatering pumps goes a long way

SUBMERSIBLE DEWATERING PUMPS HAVE ONE CLEAR GOAL

to move water, whether its to another location for reuse or to simply remove
water from a low-lying area. For the most part they require minimal maintenance.
But before you set and forget your submersible dewatering pumps,
there are some preventive maintenance practices you should follow to keep
them operating day in and day out so productivity keeps flowing in the right
direction. And some of the most important practices start long before your
submersible pumps hit the job site.
A PUMP THAT SIZES UP
Electric submersible pumps are the most commonly used pumps for
dewatering aggregate mines. They are small and lightweight and when it comes
to maintaining the pumps, choosing the right one for the application is one
of the biggest decisions youll make. Using a pump that isnt sized for the
application can lead to issues down the road, like a broken shaft, dislodged
seal or thrown impeller. On aggregate mines where dewatering is often critical
to production, that means costly downtime.
To avoid this, there are three things to consider: the material you are
pumping, how far you need to pump it and the elevation to which it will be
pumped. If it will be moving water and aggregates rather than just water, youll
need a model that is rated for that application and is equipped with impellers
made of a durable material, like cast iron. Other materials, like polyurethane,
can handle water, but the abrasive materials like aggregates can cause them to
wear out quickly. Electric submersible pumps rated for these applications can
typically move aggregates as large as 1 inch in diameter with minimal wear
to components.
From there you will want to confirm the pump can move water as far
as you need it to go. Generally, the farther the pump is from the water site,
the greater the gallons per minute (gpm) it will need to move the water to
or from that location. And if the water has to move uphill, the pump will
also need more head capacity. In other words, how high the pump can raise
water. Electric submersible pumps operate with as much as 5,300 gpm and
can pump water as high as 275 feet. Outputs can be as wide as 10 inches in
diameter for even greater flow capacities.
GET IMMERSED IN THE DETAILS
Once youve determined the right size, make sure the pump is built
with durable materials and has features that will withstand long run times

and the harsh conditions of aggregate applications. The pumps wear plates
and seals play an important role in that since they help protect the internal
components. Choose pumps with double mechanical seals, which provide a
consistent, watertight interface. Some manufacturers offer stainless steel seals,
which last longer than rubber seals and are more durable, which makes them
great for aggregate applications. Also look for mechanisms that stop the unit if
it overheats or the electric current overloads the pump. On most models the
pump will automatically restart after it has cooled. This helps protect the motor
from damage and extends the life of the pump.
If your pump will be unattended, consider installing a float that
automatically shuts the pump off when the water level becomes too low, then
restarts it as the level rises. This prevents damage to the seal and premature
motor failure.
In addition to pump components that keep damage from occurring, there
are others that make maintenance faster and easier on the job site. For example,
some pumps offer access to their interiors with the removal of just three bolts
rather than several more on other models. Some pumps also dont require
users to remove additional components, like the seal, to access the interior. For
even faster maintenance on the job site, many manufacturers offer a complete
replacement package that includes a seal, shaft and impeller and everything
users need to install them. Also consider where you can get parts and how long
you might have to wait for them.
Now youre ready to get things moving. But once you have your pump in
place, dont forget to pay it a visit once in a while.
A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY
While every piece of equipment with moving parts needs regular
preventive maintenance, its particularly important for equipment used in
rugged applications like dewatering aggregate mines.
Electric submersible pumps have three main wear parts: the impeller, seal
and shaft. A drop of preventive maintenance goes a long way with all of them.
Since the seal is one of the most critical parts of a pump, its important to
check the seal oil as often as once a week in heavy-use applications and refill it
as needed. This will ensure the seal remains properly lubricated and watertight.
Inspecting hoses and cables for damage should be on your weekly checklist
too, especially if they are exposed to the elements or in areas where traffic could
cause damage. Typically a damaged pump hose is easy to spot as youll see
water flowing from the hose. A damaged cord, on the other hand, might not
be as noticeable, and if left unrepaired could be a danger to personnel or short

the motor.
For pumps in permanent applications, youll also want to take them out
of service about every four months to thoroughly inspect internal components
like the impeller and shaft. Damage to these areas can allow water to leak into
the pump and damage components. This is also a good time to change the
seal oil as it can become thick and gummy over time and cause the pump to
burn out. Dont forget to shut down the power supply before performing any
maintenance to eliminate the risk of injuries.
Finally, keep a backup pump on hand to keep water flowing if your pump
needs maintenance or when you take it out of service.

The longevity and performance of your pump all trickles down from the
preventive maintenance practices you perform. From the time you purchase a
pump to the last day its on site, a clear preventive maintenance plan will keep
water moving and productivity flowing in the right direction. GOMC

he Caterpillar Yellow CV-100T tandem-axle hydrovac

of eyes at the 2014 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental
Expo. Well-known in the oil and gas industry, the show is a great
opportunity for Premier to gain exposure in the private industrial
pumping and excavation market, as well as the municipal market,
according to Warren Lindgren, Premiers chief marketing officer.
This show gives us new exposure to clients and potential
clients that we wouldnt normally reach, says Lindgren. It
also gives us an opportunity to highlight our partnership with
Caterpillar, with full Cat service at the front and rear of the
machine. We received a tremendous amount of excitement on
our CV-Series, especially the CV-100T. Its a unit that will take
care of the needs of anyone in the hydroexcavation field.
This trucks power comes from its Caterpillar CT13
vocational engine, along with a CX31 six-speed automatic
transmission coupled with a Caterpillar-built transfer case to
drive its water pumps and blower unit. The unit has freshwater
capacity of 1,683 gallons, and a separate debris tank with a
capacity of 13.5 cubic yards. It utilizes a Robuschi RBS/DV-Series
6,250 cfm at 27 inches Hg blower complete with heated valves
for winter operation, dig tubes and wands, a 700,000 Btu boiler,
and an Omnex wireless remote control for boom operation. The

Hydroexcavation clears the earth around utility pipelines,

and can remove sludge, slurries, mud, gravel and other waste
from a work site. However, when the job calls for the removal
of large amounts of material, tried-and-true excavators and
loaders are ideal. Whether you need traditional excavating,
loading, hydroexcavation equipment or tanks, here are
options to consider.

TANK FARM ENABLES BULK FUEL STORAGE AT REMOTE SITE
Problem
Mega Precious Metals Monument Bay project in Manitoba, Canada, had an inefficient fuel management system
where fuel was moved one barrel at a time. The companys CEO, Glen Kuntz, sought to turn the site into a modern and
efficient camp that supplied comfort while also reducing its environmental footprint. One of the critical components
in the plan was to utilize bulk fuel, brought in by aircraft, and then transferred to collapsible fuel storage bladders.
Solution
The company set up a tank farm using Arctic King collapsible fuel bladders from SEI Industries. The pillow-style
tanks are designed especially for Arctic conditions. We bought five one for Jet A fuel, two for diesel, one for gasoline and a spare, says Kuntz. With the tank
farm, we can fly in bulk fuel and fill the bladders once a year. Collapsible fuel bladders can be folded up to a fraction of their deployable size, making them easy
and cost-effective for transportation to difficult locations. Theyre durable, typically require almost no site preparation and are more environmentally friendly to the
ground beneath them.
Result
Using the Arctic King tank farm, Kuntz says the fuel savings have amounted to between 50 to 60 percent compared to the way the camp was operating.
Thats a significant savings and the environmental benefits go all the way down the line, from less consumption of diesel to the reduced transportation of it, he

TANKS PROVIDE SECONDARY CONTAINMENT AT FRAC SAND FACILITY

Problem
An oil and gas operation in West Virginia sought a turnkey storage solution for over 4 million gallons of water
pumped from a local river. The site location was restricted in size. They also required containment in order to meet
local environmental regulations.
Solution
Tank Connection designed, manufactured and installed tanks designed to store water, which would then be
pumped to different well sites to aid in drilling. Tank Connection provided both primary and secondary containment
tanks. The two primary (inner) tanks were 80.21 feet in diameter and 54.52 feet tall, and the secondary containment tanks were 89.13 feet in diameter and 52.85
feet tall. The primary tanks were constructed with flat steel floors and aluminum domes, and the secondary containment consisted of tanks with embedded base
rings with concrete floors.
Result
All tanks were built from grade level utilizing a jacking process to ensure crew safety and maintain quality control. In addition, the company designed and
installed the tank foundations and provided all accessories and piping between the tanks to meet the customers requirements. The tanks have performed according

PetroFeed app helps industry officials locate and track Canadian drill rigs and wells

he oil and gas market is huge business in Canada, but sometimes it

can be tough keeping track of which companies are moving rigs or
who is drilling where.
Ashley Dunfields PetroFeed mobile application for iOS and Android
devices as well as desktop and laptop computers can help track all of that
information.
Rig location information and activity information is just fundamental to
basically everything thats happening in the oil and gas industry. Thats where
all the money is being spent, says Dunfield, CEO and founder of PetroFeed.
Really, the rig represents just the primary service among many services that
go into actually doing that job and getting that well built and on stream.
Dunfield says by offering the app, which went live in February 2013, his
company is building a network for industry professionals that allows them to
do their jobs in the oilfields easier.

to well sites, Dunfield says. It gives you directions and gives you visibility
into what is happening around you. You can follow a rig and get status
notifications automatically pushed to you when something changes.
The app, which is available in both the iTunes app store and Google
Play store, shows the user the location and status of every drilling rig in
western Canada. By clicking on the rig, users can see all the related historical
information, including its previous drilling locations and activities. Users can
also receive directions to the site or connect to that rig, Dunfield says.
You press the connect button and itll ask you what your position is on
that rig, whether it be rig manager, tool push or whatever, Dunfield says.
Then we go through a verification process to confirm you are who you say
you are and once we verify that, youll actually see a private social group
around that rig.

Those users who are able to connect to the rig can then post messages
and exchange information about the activities and operations on site, but its
only visible to people who are securely connected.
[PetroFeed] is also extremely useful to anyone in sales and business
development in the service sector, so theyre trying to track where potential
job opportunities are opening up or where to drive sales, Dunfield says.
The app allows users to follow several different rigs or one specific company
and provides a level of transparency to well pad activities, Dunfield says.
THE IDEA
Dunfield grew up in the oil and gas industry and got the idea for the app
while being mentored to take over his fathers oil company.
Social networks were really just catching on at that time and I was
looking at what does a social network do to make it so efficient for one person
to communicate with so many, Dunfield says. What I ended up creating
was this other company called Life Socket that actually uses principles of
social networking technology as not just a relationship between people,
but relationships between other things like a house to determine contacts
and relevance.

Life Socket drew interest from different government agencies and Dunfield
was able to connect with some engineers from Google and Facebook and gain
exposure to modern software technologies, techniques and concepts.
I did that for a few years before realizing I never want to sell to government
again and the best place I could actually apply what I knew was back in the oil
and gas industry, he says. Using all that technology, I came back into the oil
and gas industry where I have very unique domain experience, knowledge and
connections. Thats essentially where PetroFeed came from.
Dunfield says it has taken about a year to really get the app to the point
where he could market it, which includes 10 months of development before the
first version was released publicly in 2013.
PetroFeed uses a variety of sources to gather its rig-site information oil
and gas companies, the government and industry associations. The app then
stitches it together to create the most accurate, real-time information possible,
Dunfield says.
GETTING EXPOSURE
In late August and early September, local and national media attention
pushed the app to No. 1 in the Canada App Stores business category on iTunes.
Dunfield says the popularity of the app shows how important the industry
is not only to those in it but the general public as well.
Traditionally, this information has only been available via an expensive
subscription and even then it mostly wasnt mobile, it was mostly desktopbased applications that had it, Dunfield says.
Dunfield adds that the free services offered on the app and website now
will always be free, but the company is looking at adding more sophisticated
features and functionalities that eventually will be rolled into a fee-based
premium category.
I think part of the reason for our success is not just the availability of the
data and making it free, but also making it extremely easy to access, Dunfield
says. The information is just so simple. A lot of the feedback weve had is that
people just love how easy it is.

Dunfield has seen his company grow and doesnt expect it to stop anytime
soon. When the app launched in February 2013 they had six employees, in
mid-August they had nine and by the end of September they had 15.
Dunfield expects to have 21 employees by January.
Weve had explosive growth. Theres no way we would have ever
committed to the kind of user numbers that we have already achieved,
Dunfield says. Its the kind of user numbers that we would have dreamed for
and theyve come in very, very rapidly for us.
PetroFeed added well locations to its database in mid-September and now
the company is looking to expand into the United States. Dunfield says the
company is looking at five different areas in the U.S., but hasnt picked which
ones to push out first. U.S. oil and gas industry officials and the general
public can already download and access the app, but currently it only shows

Mats provide pathway, platforms
for heavy equipment

GeoTerra GTO construction mats from Presto Geosystems are
designed for temporary access roads, work platforms, tracking pads, and
temporary and long-term storage. Made from 100 percent virgin highdensity polyethylene, the mats can be installed and moved on site.
It doesnt take a bucket crane or a backhoe to swing around to lift
these up and walk them in, says Bill Handlos, business director at Presto
Geosystems. They can be laid by two to four guys and a skid-steer.
The custom-built mats handle pickup trucks, as well as heavy
equipment, including 35-ton cranes, bulldozers and tracked backhoes.
Weve put 80,000-pound concrete trucks across ours on a
California Bearing Ratio of 2, he says of soil conditions that range from
soft mud to topsoil to wet clay. At 70 degrees F, the mats have a crush
strength of 550 psi.
Whats more important than the weight of the vehicle is the function
of the soil type beneath, the weight of the vehicle, the number of axles
or the contact area of tracks and the contact pressure, Handlos says. A
bulldozer might exert 12 psi, even though it is very heavy, while a pickup
truck might load 40 to 50 psi. So a pickup truck is harder to get in and out
of wet spots than a bulldozer.
The 17.5- by 36.5- by 2-inch mats weigh 11.8 pounds and are held
together by polyethylene bolts.
You can put them right over grass, he says. If theyre going to be on
softer ground, then you would put a geosynthetic layer down first, which
passes water but doesnt pass earth.

Depending on the application, several types of anchors can be used

to secure the oil-, chemical- and fire-resistant mat system. Auger anchors
can be rotated into the ground and retightened or easily removed, while
earth anchors are permanently driven into the ground.
A mining operator might use the mats as a work platform or clean
surface where trailers and equipment are staged, Handlos says.
Presto has used the mats in South American rain forests where they
were preassembled in 10- by 8-foot pads and flown in by helicopter.
The preassembled mats can be used for other remote sites to simplify
on-site labor.
A 2-acre work pad would typically require 4 acres of rain forest to
be cut down. So were able to reduce the impact on the rain forest, he
says. The mats also are reusable. Down there its so wet the degradation
of wood timber systems is pretty quick, about a year. Ours can be there

throughout the country every
day either by pipelines or trains,
emergency responders are trying to find
ways to keep up with the booming industry.
Im not sure many fire departments
are prepared to handle a major rail incident
in the center of their community, says
Bruce Roed, a specialist with the Minnesota
State Fire Marshals office.
Between 2008 and 2013, the number
of railcars carrying oil increased from 9,500
to 434,000, nearly doubling just from 2012
to 2013, according to the Association of
American Railroads.

more, training more and looking at what
additional items of equipment will be
needed should an incident happen in a
community where you live, said Greg Wilz,
director of the North Dakota Department of
Emergency Services in an interview with the
Associated Press.
INDUSTRY STEPPING UP
One way first responders can prepare
for incidents in the oil and gas industry is by
help from those in the industry.
The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy
Education Program (OOGEEP) has focused
on training and educating emergency
responders on the unique oilfield situations

since 2001. Over the course of the last 13

years, nearly 1,000 firefighters from across
Ohio and seven other states have undergone
this training, according to Charlie Dixon,
training administrator for OOGEEP.
While these types of oilfield events
are indeed rare, the preparation for such
occurrences has proven invaluable,
Dixon says.
Dixon notes that OOGEEP recently
received a letter from Carrollton (Ohio) Fire
Chief Tom Mesler regarding a fire involving
a tank truck loading condensate on a
production pad.
Upon arrival, Chief Mesler, along
with his department and mutual aid
departments, other agencies and industry
representatives encountered a fully involved
tank truck with exposures to the storage
tank battery, Dixon says.
Chief Mesler established a unified
command for the fire and with 19 members
of his fire department having undergone
OOGEEP training, he says the department
was able to respond with proper education
and safety.
The BNSF Railway, which owns
most of the railroads in North Dakota
and throughout much of Minnesota, is
also helping first responders by paying for
training for local firefighters in the two states
and elsewhere on how to deal with oil train
accidents. BNSF had its own derailment in
2013 near Casselton, N.D.
Casselton Fire Chief Tim McLean
says he plans to send as many of his crew
of volunteer firefighters to the training
as he can. The day of the derailment near
Casselton, McLean drove to within half
a mile of the fire and could go no closer,
seeing no chance to fight it.
STATES TAKING NOTICE

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee says that
state and federal governments need to take
quick action to prevent and respond to oil
spills as he cites deadly risks associated with
the increased amount of crude oil shipments
through his state.
Inslee compares an oil train explosion
to a bomb going off and notes that he was
concerned that local emergency responders,
especially in small communities along the
railroad lines, werent adequately prepared
to respond to incidents.
The study done by the state
recommends more railroad inspectors, more
money for the states oil spill response and
prevention program, boosting firefighting
and oil spill equipment and ensuring that
those who transport oil can pay for cleanup.
We think its appropriate that the
industry buck up and be responsible for
additional safety requirements, Inslee says.
Washington collects an oil spill
response tax when crude oil and petroleum
is received at a marine terminal from a vessel
or barge, but that tax isnt collected when
oil is moved by rail or pipeline. Lawmakers
have tried unsuccessfully to change that in
previous sessions.
BNSF Railway notes that it has taken
significant steps to improve safety, including
training thousands of local emergency
responders each year 600 in Washington
alone. It has also staged specialized
equipment across its network.
TRAINING TAKING PLACE
Washington isnt the only state where
first responders are already being trained. In
October, nearly 100 emergency responders
from federal, state and local agencies in
three states spent three days training for
a potential large-scale train incident with
crude oil spilling from tank cars into the
Mississippi River.
On-water drills included the placement
of deflection booms designed to divert or
contain an oil spill along with mock oiled-

wildlife collection and rehabilitation efforts by natural resource managers.

The energy boom has brought a lot of crude oil in regular proximity
to high-value natural resources and refuge areas, says David Morrison,
exercise director of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. One of our
tasks as emergency responders is to prepare for the worst by practicing rapid
containment and recovery, wildlife protection and habitat preservation.
The training, conducted near La Crosse, Wis., was organized by the Upper
Mississippi Hazardous Spills Coordination Group, a coalition of state and
federal agencies with emergency response responsibilities, with support from
local governments, private-sector partners and the Upper Mississippi River
Basin Association.
According to Dave Hokanson, water-quality program director for
the association, about seven unit trains pass through La Crosse County
each day carrying up to 21 million gallons of volatile crude oil from the
Bakken formation.
While a train derailment could result in an explosion or other urban
disaster, this exercise was focused on responding to an environmental disaster.
Not that those arent important things, Hokanson says. But we wanted
to see what would happen if we had product in the water. We wanted to test
our ability to form a unified command, test our ability to deploy booms on the
water, evaluate impacts to wildlife and habitat, and test communications.
In another training exercise held in North Dakota in June, the Department
of Emergency Services held a session for emergency responders focused on
Bakken oil trains as well.
The reality is every community really needs to assess what is their level
of risk and what the potential hazard could be of something that could be, at
some level, catastrophic, Wilz says. And ask themselves: If that happens in
our community, what can we do, what should be done and should we ask for

The proper work-specific gloves are a key part of staying safe on the job

OSHA lists several criteria to guide

you, as well:
Type of chemicals handled
Nature of contact (total immersion,
splash, etc.)
Duration of contact
Area requiring protection (hand
only, forearm, arm)
Grip requirements (dry, wet, oily)
Thermal protection
Size and comfort
Abrasion/resistance requirements
ANSI has a voluntary standard
(ANSI/ISEA 105-2000) to help measure
performance of different gloves. The
numerical scale measures such things as
resistance to cuts, punctures and several
other criteria.
That will help, but working in the oil
and gas industry poses a unique hazard, in
that a cut glove can also expose a worker
to any number of diseases like tetanus and
injuries such as burns. Waterproof gloves
may not be enough; it may be necessary
to wear multiple gloves, or one with
several layers, to protect against multiple
hazards such as oil and gas,
electricity, punctures and
abrasions from equipment.

be enough. The National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health says there
are about 25 hand injuries per 10,000
workers every year. According to OSHA,
70 percent of hand injuries happen to
workers who are not wearing gloves;
the rest happen when the wrong gloves
are used.
The onus is on the employer to make
sure workers are using the right gloves
for the right situations, along with other
appropriate safety equipment. OSHA has
no specific regulations pertaining to gloves,
but they are required PPE: Employers
shall select and require employees to
use appropriate hand protection when
employees hands are exposed to hazards
such as those from skin absorption
of harmful substances; severe cuts or
lacerations; severe abrasions; punctures;
chemical burns; thermal burns; and
harmful temperature extremes (29 CFR
1910.138).

conditions. Its outer shell is 100 percent
cowhide leather. Inside are a layer of Nomex insulation, a breathable membrane
that is waterproof and windproof, and a
layer of cut-resistant Kevlar for flame resistance and cut protection. It is just one
line of gloves made with Kevlar marketed
by Youngstown; many others offer Kevlar
gloves as well.
US Jetting is now marketing a
glove made of a relatively new material,
according to President Nick Woodhead.
From TST-Sweden, it is designed for jetting,
high-pressure painting and working with
hydraulics. You look at some of the injuries
that occur, a lot of people lose limbs, says
Woodhead. These gloves can take a direct
straight jet of about 3,000 psi and a rotary
jet of 7,500 psi.
Marketed under the ProOperator
name, the gloves are made of an ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene called
Dyneema. Used in body armor, climbing
equipment, parachutes, joint implants and
other areas where high strength and light
weight is needed, Dyneema is said to be,
weight-for-weight, up to 15 times stronger
than steel and four times stronger than
Kevlar. You wouldnt dream of walking
through a plant without safety glasses
today, says Woodhead. Up to now, there
hasnt been a glove that could withstand a
water jet injury. Now there is one.
As the technology of protective
gear continues to grow, expectations of
employers will grow right along with it. Its
a good idea to keep up with the changes
so you can offer employees the latest in
equipment on the job so they can go home
to their families safely every night. GOMC
