The

World
of
Emulsions

Exactly your chemistry.

Welcome to the
world of emulsions.
Our emulsions are waterbased and to a large extent
require no solvents. For this
reason they are particularly
suitable for the manufacture
of environment-friendly
products.

The world of emulsions is an extremely varied one. After all,

today emulsions are essential for numerous applications, and
thats why we encounter them everywhere in our day-to-day
lives. They make it easier for us to carry out various tasks,
improve the properties of many products and are important
components in everyday items. In addition, emulsions are

water-based and to a large extent require no solvents. For this

reason they are also particularly suitable for the manufacture
of environment-friendly products.
Whether its for packaging food or for leather clothing,
emulsions often play an essential role. In road surfaces for
example, they help to bring about a significant reduction in disturbance from traffic noise, or they provide concrete floors
with a high degree of impermeability, thereby helping to protect
ground water from hazardous substances. We also encounter
them in our homes as components in paints for indoor and outdoor use, wood varnishes, and varnishes for parquet-floors and

Wood gluing
Gluing is the predominant method for
joining pieces of wood and high
demands are placed on the adhesives
used. These demands are met extremely
well by adhesives based on polyvinyl
acetate emulsions such as Mowilith
DHS with polyvinyl alcohol as protective
colloid. The most important applications
for these adhesives include: assembly
glue, veneer and surface glues, glues for
edges or laminating adhesives for laminate sheets, and parquet-flooring adhesives. The final strength of gluing is
greater than the material strength of all
the important woods used.

The gluing of wood in a broader sense

also includes the finishing of chipboard,
when paper films impregnated with PVC
or resin are applied as a laminate.

For many applications, water-based

wood glues also need to form a waterproof film. This is where Clariant products such as Mowilith DHWR, LDL 2555
W and Mowilith LDL 2510 W, which are
used as a one-pack or two-pack formulation, can provide the answer. With adhesives based on these emulsions its no
problem to meet the stress requirements
of DIN EN 204 D 3 and 4.

important use is the laying of floor coverings. As far as the formulation of adhesives specifically for floor coverings is
concerned, the trend goes towards

Flexible mineral sealing slurries

Flexible mineral sealing slurries are
used to seal outside walls against
damp. Or, under tile and slab
coverings on terraces and
balconies, in bathrooms or
in other rooms where
there is dampness.
After
drying, a
polymer matrix
forms inside the mineral structure, giving the
system its flexible properties.
Sealing slurries made with Mowilith
LDM 1355 or Mowilith LDM 6480 have a
very good low-temperature flexibility
down to 0 C owing to their low glass
transition temperature. Low temperature
elasticity down to 20 C can be
achieved with sealing slurry based on
Mowilith VDM 785. Thus cracks can

LDM 1355
LDM 6480

be bridged even at temperatures below

0 C.
Sealing slurries prevent water from
entering the subsoil, though they do not
prevent diffusion of water vapour from
the subsoil. Furthermore, there is virtually no further carbonating of concrete
and the penetration of chlorides or other
salts which cause damage to concrete is
slowed down considerably.
Paste-type tile adhesives
Paste-type tile adhesives based on
water-based Mowilith emulsions are
used to fix ceramic and stoneware tiles
on various substrates such as concrete,
foamed concrete, cement facing,
gypsum plaster, chipboard and other
wallboards in the thin-bed method.
Mowilith DM 611 is a binder which
is excellent for formulating conventional
paste-type tile adhesives. Binders
Mowilith VDM 628 and Mowilith LDM
6636 are used for high-quality tile adhesives where higher demands are placed
on wet adhesion.

Concrete modification
The increasingly strict requirements with
regard to the environment above all
with respect to groundwater protection
can in many cases not be met by conventional concrete. Problems also arise
in places where aggressive substances
of the types occurring in waste water
and acid rain attack the concrete.
Modifying concrete with Mowilith
LDM 6880 offers an effective solution to
these problems. The addition of
Mowilith LDM 6880 reduces considerably the depth of penetration and depth
of damage in relation to substances
which pose a danger to ground water
and attack concrete.
The sealing effect is also improved
by the swelling of the polymer particles
with the chemicals which have penetrated near the surface. The main applications for concrete with Mowilith LDM
6880 are:

LDM 6880

concrete collecting basins in industry

bunds (track and tanks)
modified reinforced-concrete pipes
concrete components for the wastewater sector
floors of storage and production buildings
Building material emulsions for screeds,
industrial floors and mortar modification
Screeds and industrial floors are
exposed in practice to high loads and it
is for this reason that the building material emulsions Mowilith VDM 618, LDM
1355 and Mowilith DM 778 are used to
improve almost all cement-based
systems.
Mowilith building material emulsions have a liquifying effect and give
these cement systems a high degree of
plasticity, so work can be carried out

with a lower water/cement ratio, but with

the same working consistency. This has
a beneficial effect particularly on the
mechanical characteristics such as
compressive strength and tensile bonding strength. Furthermore, polymer modification improves the cohesive strength
of the mixture. Thus the tendency for
water to be separated out from cement
paste (bleeding) is reduced or even prevented. The result is a very dense structure with a high degree of impermeability
and high resistance to substances which
are damaging to hardened cement paste.
Mowilith building material emulsions
are also suitable for the formulation of
bond bridges for bonding under force.

Raw materials
for a wide range
of end-products.
Clariants Business Unit Emulsions also
manufactures a series of emulsions for
the leather, textile, paper, and food sectors which serve as valuable raw materials for the various end-products.
In the leather and textile field we
work very closely with the Process and
Performance Products Division. The joint
developments are brought to the production stage in the Emulsions Business Unit
and manufactured in the plants of the
Cellulose Ethers and Polymerisates Division.

A variety of emulsions.
Leather fibre
In the manufacture of leather fibre
emulsions with different properties are
used according to the required area of
use. The properties of our products
range from very soft to relatively hard,
from high water resistance to the ability
to absorb 30% water. One of the major
applications for leather fibre is the manufacture of insoles, counters, and groundcontact soles in shoe production. Fibre
leathers are however also used to make
belts and bags. The treatment and finishing of leather is an important activity of
the Process and Performance Products
Division.

18

Exactly your chemistry.

Paper
The variety of uses for
our Mowilith emulsions
in the paper industry ranges
from the coating of wallpapers, cartons
and special papers to the finishing of
filter papers.
One particular area of use is the
manufacture of decorative papers
impregnated with melamine resin.
Here the emulsion ensures that the endproduct is elastic. That is very important
if these decorative papers are being
used as edging material in the
covering of chipboard.
Food
In order that our emulsions can
be used in the food sector they must
comply with strict food-law regulations.
Used as a covering for salami-type
sausages, for example, emulsions provide mechanical and hygienic protection,
assist the maturing process and prevent
the product from drying out.
Textiles
In the textile sector too,
our emulsions perform
important tasks in many
areas. Thus for example
finishes which above all
guarantee wash-fastness and firm handling properties are required for collars

and cuffs. Another example is the treatment of curtains. The curtains are
treated with a suitable emulsion after normal washing. In this way
the fibre is surrounded by a protective
film which, amongst other things, is
impermeable to the tar generated by
smoking and thereby prevents yellowing
of the fibre.
The non-wovens sector opens up a
broad spectrum of uses for emulsions,
ranging from fabric for filters to sanitary
and household items such as serviettes,
tablecloths, disposable linen and nappy
material. The main requirements here
include wet tear resistance and absorption capacity. But for non-wovens in
industrial applications, for civil engineering and for transportation, it is hydrophobic properties and dimensional stability,
even at high temperatures, which are
required above all.
The emulsions used here are based
predominantly on vinyl acetate/ethylene
and acrylic esters which develop their
special properties through internal
crosslinking.

Research
and development.

release no volatile organic compounds

(VOC) other than water during application and drying. Emulsions with emulsifiers, which are toxic to fish and suspected of having a mutagenic effect, are
being replaced systematically.
The financial resources for research
and development at Clariant are
employed specifically for certain areas
of application and product groups. Basic
questions are dealt with in conjunction
with outside partners, including universities and large research organisations.
One example of an interesting topic is
the investigation into the processes
which take place during film formation
with emulsions.

Everything started with the discovery of

the polymerisation of vinyl acetate by
Klathe in 1913. Today Clariant offers the
most extensive range of products not
only in terms of polymer emulsions which
contain vinyl acetate, but also for styrene
acrylate and pure acrylate emulsions for
a wide variety of applications.
It is through our great commitment to
research and development that we have
been able to build up and consolidate
this lead. Today Clariant determines the
state of the art in many areas of work.
Thus for example, emulsions with very
fine particles are able to penetrate into
the substrate, e.g. wood or plaster,
strengthen it and thereby lay the foundation for a perfect coating. Self-curing

emulsions give masonry paints a high

degree of elasticity even at sub-zero
temperatures. Wood glues containing a
new curing system retain their strength
even in boiling water.
It is not only quality which is of crucial importance in the development and
manufacture of new products, but also a
rational and economical production
process. However, environment and consumer protection are the most important
factors nowadays. Clariant takes its ecological leadership role seriously and is
the first company to have developed corresponding products and launched them
on the market. Apart from water, modern
interior paints basically contain only
polymers, pigments and fillers and

geographically speaking, in Frankfurt. In
addition Clariant has research centres in
England, Sweden and Japan. The prime
concern in all our work is a consistent
focus on the customer, the application
and the particular market. What is
essential is that we supply not only
products of a consistently high quality,
but also the know-how for optimal use. In
a number of countries small development
groups apply our research results to the
specific conditions of their home markets: to different customer needs, different standards and laws and different
local raw materials. Thus we are able to

Packaging, storage
and safety information.
Drums and disposable containers:
Here polyethylene drums with a 150 kg capacity or disposable polyethylene containers with a capacity of about 1000 kg are used. Packaging which
has been completely emptied and cleaned is reused.

Delivery by road-tanker:
Our road tankers carry about
20 tonnes of emulsion per trip.
As a rule the tanks are divided into
24 chambers with defined capacities.
The tankers comprise a motorised unit
and a trailer.

Product preservation
Even though our emulsion products have been treated to be protected
against attack by microorganisms, the usual recommended preservatives
for polymer emulsions should be used; the compatibility and effectiveness of these
preservatives must be tested beforehand. Here emulsions used for the food sector
are an exception, as they do not contain any preservatives.

Storage:
Emulsions should be stored for no longer than 6 months before being used
and at a constant temperature in the range 525 C. The products must be
protected from frost.

Quality inspection:
The figures determined at a particular
time by our Quality Inspection Laboratory when a product is released may
change as result of time in storage and
storage conditions and may go beyond
the specified limits.

Disposal:
The products may be sent to a landfill site or to an incinerator, provided
that the regulations in force are complied with; in some cases it may be
necessary to consult a waste disposal company or the relevant authority. Diluted
solution can be released into a biological treatment plant, with the approval of the
authority responsible for operating the plant.
