Education President and Diamaris Rios Vice
President on Wednesday at the annual re-organization meeting of the school board.
With new leadership, two new members and six candidates vying to be the third, change is the byword for
the Vineland Board of Education and administration,
preparing to meet the challenges of a new year.
It is definitely not a sprint, its a marathon, said
English. The next few months we have a rollercoaster
ahead of us. There is a lot heading our way. But we have
excellent board members who have specialized in so
many different areas.... I think this district is going to see
some changes in the right direction."
Helping English oversee this time of new direction is
Diamaris Rios, elected vice president at Wednesday's
meeting to start her third, three-year term on the school
board. Also taking their seats were the two new board
members elected in their first bid for office in
NovemberKim Codispoti and Joseph Pagano.
Administering the oath was Robert DeSanto, Solicitor.
The other returning board members are Brian DeWinne,
Frank DiGiorgio, Chris Jennings, and Susanne Morello.
The ninth seat is currently vacant, the result of the
recent resignation of Richard Baruffi. At the January 14
meeting, the board will hear presentations from the candidates asking to serve as an appointed board member until
the post can be filled for the remaining one year of Baruffi's
term in the November election. The group includes Inez
Acosta, Peter D'Arrigo, Dexter L. Gordon, Rudolph Harris,
David Jamil, Kenneth D. Loadholt, and Anthony Rizzo.
After the presentations, the board will retire to executive
session and then return to announce their choice.
The other two members of the past year's group are
Tom Ulrich, who did not seek re-election, and Eugene
Medio, who was unsuccessful in his bid for a new term.

Revisting accomplishments of the year

past and looking forward to more ahead.
appy New Year. Before we get

to what will undoubtedly be a
very busy and exciting year for
us, let us take a few minutes
and revisit our accomplishments in 2014.
Our affiliate wasted no time getting
down to work last year as we hosted two
visiting college groups who came to our
area to volunteer with us. Saint Anselm
College arrived on the 4th of January to
begin their week of service and Colgate
University arrived on the 12th. Back-toback weeks of ambitious college students
who showed up eager to work was the
perfect start to our year.
On January 11, after months of work to
renovate the former Ace Plumbing parts
warehouse at 601 S. Delsea Drive, we held
our Grand Opening of our ReStore.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and
donation centers that sell new and gently
used furniture, home accessories, building
materials, and appliances to the public at a
fraction of the retail price. Proceeds from
the store go toward helping us further our
mission of providing safe, decent and
affordable housing to deserving families in
Cumberland County. The store has been a
huge success. If you havent visited it yet,
please put it on your to-do list in 2015.
In February, we began the search for
our next partner family. Within months,
the Family Selection Committee selected
two families that they felt would be
deserving and able partner families. Both
the Duprey and Acosta families were
introduced at our annual gala.
March means Spring Break. Spring
Break means college students. During the
five weeks of Spring Break, our affiliate
hosted four college groups. Cardinal
Stritch University, Providence College,
Wilson College and the University of
Delaware all selected Cumberland County
as their destination of choice. These students provided hundreds of hours to help
us wrap up our home construction project
at 525 E. Plum Street.
In May, our affiliate celebrated our 25th
Anniversary with a gala held at Eastlyn Golf
Course. It was the best attended gala in
recent memory. Even some of our Spring
Break college students traveled back to our
area to witness Tom Baxter receive his
Lifetime Achievement Award. Tom serves
as the Project Manager when college groups

work on our sites. They tend to love Tom.
Summer marked the end of our home
construction project on Plum Street. On
July 10, Zoraida Vargas became a homeowner. More than 60 people were on hand
at the Home Dedication & Blessing. What
a great day!
August was no time to rest. On the
22nd, we hosted our annual golf tournament. This event, our largest event
fundraiser, was a success thanks to the
many volunteers who helped support it.
(We are actually forming a committee for
this years tournament now. If interested,
please reach out.) In August we applied
for our construction permits for our project at 3321 N. Delsea Drive in Vineland.
No rest for the weary.
Alyssa Velazquez, a local resident and
four-year Habitat for Humanity participant
during her time at Washington College,
was hired as our affiliates Administrative
Assistant. Alyssa hit the ground running
and has already left an impact on our
organization and the people we serve.
When fall arrived, our focus was on our
new construction project at 3321 N. Delsea
Drive. After weeks of lot clearing and site
work, actual construction began in
October. Volunteers at the site have been
strong. We average over 25 volunteers
each Saturday. If you have ever thought of
participating in a construction project,
please give the office a call. No experience
is required. You will meet some of the
nicest people that you have ever known.
As the year came to an end, we saw
some changes on our Board of Directors.
Long-time members Walter Wood and
Linda Hinckley saw their service end.
Replacing them on the Board are Debbie
Holman from Century Savings Bank,
Demetrica Todd of Gateway Community
Action Partnership and Tony Heath of
UPS. We expect great things from them all.
Yes, 2014 was a busy year for us. Some
might suggest it was the busiest ever. They
might be right. But just wait until you see
what we have planned for this year. I

Union, Benjamin T. Griffith, president/CEO of
SJFCU, will retire in April 2015.
After a national search for Griffiths replaceGriffith
ment, Rahul Kachru, who most recently was
Chief Operating Officer at Long Beach City
Employees Federal Credit Union in Long Beach,
Calif., will join SJFCU in mid-January.
Griffith will stay on in a consultant capacity
to aid in the organizations transition to its new
chief executive officer. Rahul Kachru has 19
years of financial services experience in branch
administration, lending, operations, turnarounds, and strategy development, said
Griffith. In addition, he has experience in business development and community involvement,
Kachru
and a comprehensive technical background.
Benjamin Griffith has led SJFCU since 1974. During those four decades, Griffith
has overseen the credit unions growth from an organization with 1,500 members
to todays SJFCU with a membership base of more than 45,500 individuals
throughout South Jersey. SJFCU is currently the largest credit union in South Jersey,
and among the top 10 in New Jersey, based on its assets, currently more than $335
million. SJFCU has evolved from a single office in the City of Camden to six branch
locations in Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Cumberland and Atlantic counties.
Active in the South Jersey community, Griffith serves as treasurer of the
Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce; he is also a past chairman of the
chamber. Griffith is a member of the Board of Directors for the United Way of
Gloucester County and served on the Board of Trustees of the Southern New
Jersey Development Council. Griffith also served as a trustee of the City of
Pleasantvilles Urban Enterprise Zone. He is a past chairman and current member of the Deptford Township Business Advisory Committee, and is a past member and chairman of the New Jersey Credit Union League. Griffith has also
served as a director of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). Among
the numerous awards he has received are the Distinguished Citizen of the Year
award for Gloucester County from the Southern New Jersey Council (now Garden
State Council), Boy Scouts of America, the Camden Childrens Gardens
Champion of Children award, and the Volunteer Leadership Award of the
United Way of Gloucester County.
Rahul Kachru, of Signal Hill, Calif., comes on board with an extensive background in credit union, banking and financial institutions. He has previously
served as a senior member of the executive team at credit unions in New Jersey,
Nevada and California. His leadership helped the credit unions to grow financially
as well as within the larger communities. Previously, as a Director of Lending, he
was instrumental in building the lending department of a startup financial institution in Las Vegas, Nev. Kachru holds a degree in economics with a minor in statistics from the University of Texas at Austin. He started his career as a global management trainee with HSBC and rose to Director of Retail Sales and Operations
within nine years. Kachru is also a Six Sigma certified brown belt holder.

resources and related issues among young

Compassionate Care Hospice

Seeks Volunteers
CCH is a community-based group, and
its Volunteer program is an essential part of
the highest quality of hospice services provided to patients facing a life-limiting illness and their family.
CCH is looking for friendly, caring
individuals to visit patients, in Cumberland,
Atlantic and Cape May counties. Monthly

volunteer training sessions are held in
CCHs South Jersey Offices, 1544 W. Landis
Avenue, Vineland, NJ or 518 South Shore
Road Marmora, NJ.
CCHs Knitting Group meets weekly at
the Marmora office to knit or crochet lap
blankets for hospice patients.

Volunteers may commit as little or as
much time as they like. They become a

handcrafted items that give warmth and
comfort are welcome and appreciated.
Compassionate Care Hospice focuses its
work on the belief that each of us has the
right to die pain free and with dignity, and
our loved ones will receive the necessary
support. Trained volunteers are an essential part of CCHs dedicated, multifaceted
interdisciplinary team that follows a personalized plan of physical, emotional and
spiritual care, with respect to the patients
needs and wishes.

Cumberland County 4-H

Members Participate in
National Program Selection
Cumberland County 4-H is among the
states largest 4-H program with over 1500
registered youth learning leadership, citizenship and life skills through 4-H . The
county recently fielded four candidates to

apply to participate in the selective
National 4-H Conference, held in April at
the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase
Maryland.
National 4-H Conference is a special
meeting hosted by USDA. Attended by
approximately 350 young people from all
50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, the
conference brings together youth and
adults to help with strategic planning for
the 4-H Program nationally. The results of
all the discussions is a strategic plan for 4H along with special plans and projects
for individual states. During the event,
participants also have an opportunity to

New Jersey sends only six 4-H
Members and two adult advisers to
National 4-H Conference each year. All
four Cumberland County 4-H youth applicants were selected for interviews. 4-H
Members Heather Koering, Cole Killeen,
Nikayla Hetzell, and Anna Callavini traveled to the state 4-H office at Rutgers
University on November first for the interview. Congratulations to Heather Koering
on her selection as a delegate, and to
Nikayla Hetzell on her selection as an
alternate.
National 4-H Conference is one of
many state and regional trips to which
qualified members may apply. In addition
to traditional 4-H clubs, Cumberland
County 4-H also offers summer enrichment programs, winter camp, workshops,
numerous county events and in school and
afterschool enrichment and professional
development training.
The 4-H Youth Development Program
is part of the New Jersey Agricultural
Experiment Station and Rutgers
Cooperative Extension. 4-H educational
programs are offered to all youth grades K13 on an age-appropriate basis without
regard to race, religion, color, natural origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.

Inspira Opens Fourth

Urgent Care Center
Inspira Health Network recently
opened its fourth urgent care center in
Mantua, Gloucester County. The new
facility, which is Inspiras largest urgent
care center to date, gives the community
access to treatment for a wide range of
minor or non-life threatening conditions
when their doctor is not available or their
condition does not require the life-saving
services of a hospital emergency room.
Inspira Urgent Care Mantua, located in
the Timberline shopping center, features a
warm and welcoming reception area, 16
patient rooms, and imaging services on
site. Additionally, every patient at Inspiras
urgent care centers is treated by a physician.
At the opening event, Gloucester
County Freeholder Heather Simmons

remarked, Inspira Urgent Care is bringing
high quality health care to our community
in a way that is efficient and quick. It is
available any day of the week at practically
any time we need it. These are the types of
services that our families need and they
are now here in the way we want.
Inspiras expansion of Urgent Care
services will continue in 2015, including a
new location in Cumberland County. The
health network is currently developing a
new Urgent Care center on Landis Avenue
in Vineland which will also include an
office for its Occupational Health and
Wellness services. Inspira will also relocate its Urgent Care center and Family
Medicine office in Glassboro to a new
larger space on Rowan Boulevard.
All of Inspiras Urgent Care centers are
open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8
p.m. Inspira Urgent Care Mantua is located at 660 Woodbury-Glassboro Road,
Suite 26 in Sewell.

Leonard Jones, from Millville, was

already thankful for the Greater
Bridgeton Area Transit (GBAT) bus service. Without the bus, getting to work
every day at Seabrook Brothers would be
extremely difficult. The bus takes him
right to the front door.
Little did he know that GBAT would
also enhance his television viewing pleasure when watching sports, particularly
football. Jones had the winning raffle ticket for a new, 60-inch, flat-screen, HDTV
through the Greater Bridgeton Area
Transit second anniversary raffle.
GBAT, a Gateway Community Action
Partnership program funded by the
Pascale Sykes Foundation, plays an important role in helping people get to work and
job interviews, make health care appointments and shop locally.
I was shocked when I found out I won
the TV, Jones, 41, said. Ill probably
mount it on the wall in my living room. I

watch football big-time, but I like all
sports.
Interestingly, this is the second TV won
by Jones in the last year. He won one
through the midget football league in
Millville. While that was nice, this TV is
considerably larger.
Every work day, Jones takes a bus from
Millville to a GBAT stop on Pearl Street in
Bridgeton. From there, GBAT delivers him
to Seabrook for employment.
Its helped me greatly, Jones said.
Without it, I would have had to walk to
work once I got to Bridgeton. I like the bus.
It helps a lot of people. There are always a
lot of people on it. We have some good con-

Rossi Students Boost Toys for Tots Campaign

Students at Rossi School collected more than 200 toys and raised
an additional $500 in cash donations for the annual "Toys for Tots"
campaign, according to Ryan Suppi,
the teacher who coordinated the
effort. This is the sixth year students have participated in the campaign, supervised by Suppi.
According to information on its
website, Toys for Tots was founded
in 1947 by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. The program's objectives are to help
less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of
Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most
valuable resourcesour children; to unite all members of local communities in a
common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and
distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future. The
Vineland USMCR unit is Semper Marine Detachment #205.
In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a
Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran
Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for
Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of
activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle
races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and
concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.

Eagles/Acme Play60 Challenge pitches fitness to

Dane Barse Elementary
School participated in the ACME
Play60 Pep Rally sponsored
recently by the Philadelphia
Eagles. The focus of the program
is encouraging staying active
and eating healthy.
Approximately 100 students in
fourth and fifth grades were
treated to appearances by Eagles cheerleaders, and Swoop, the Eagles mascot.
Students participated in a game show combining questions on active lifestyles
and physical challenges. Physical challenges included a dance challenge, a push-up
challenge, a relay race and a race to dress up in a full Eagles uniform.
At the end of the program, students received an Eagles Play60 folder, and the
program donated sports supplies to the school. The PLAY 60 Challenge is a program sponsored by the American Heart Association and the National Football
League that inspires kids to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a
day in school and at home.

said. "The team wrote out custom birth certificates to 'Someone Beary Special' on
each bear. The bears were delivered to children at Inspira Medical Center, Vineland
in hopes of bringing a little cheer to each family this season.

College Rotaract Club were
inducted during the
December 30, 2014 luncheon meeting of the Vineland
Rotary Club at the Ramada
of Vineland.
Interact Clubs are Rotarysponsored service clubs for
young people ages 12-18,
which give young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service
projects while developing leadership skills and the opportunity to meet new
friends. As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary
service, with more than 13,000 clubs in 138 countries and geographical areas,
Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 300,000 young people are
involved in Interact. Vineland is part of Rotary District 7640, which has one of the
largest Interact Club membership rolls in the world.
Similarly, Rotaract brings together young people ages 18-30 in colleges, universities and communities worldwide to organize service activities, develop their leadership and professional skills, and have fun. Rotary clubs sponsor them, but Rotaract
club members manage and fund their clubs independently.

Century Savings Bank Aids Bridgeton Code Blue

Century Savings Bank recently donated
items to the Bridgeton Code Blue program.
On December 17, 2014 members of the
Century Savings Bank staff donated an array
of personal care items, such as socks, gloves
and hats in an effort to provide basic necessities for the areas un-housed population.
The Code Blue program is a partnership
involving the City of Bridgeton, community
volunteers, and several area churches to provide temporary shelter, in designated warming centers when temperatures outside
drop. The items were accepted by Dr. Rob Weinstein, Ed.D., Pastor of the Bethany
Grace Church and co-founder of the Bridgeton Code Blue Program. Bethany also
serves as one of the warming centers. In addition to employee contributions, the
bank donated self-activating heater meals, toiletry kits and travel backpacks, which
will be distributed via the center.

SNJ Today Expands Staff

Joseph S. Isabella of Egg Harbor Township has
joined SNJ Today as an Account Executive. Joe will
report to SNJ Todays Director of Sales and
Marketing Kevin Pustizzi.
According to Pustizzi, Joe will be responsible for
pursuing and developing relationships with the media
and marketing services companys business partners
and advertisers. Joe has extensive sales experience
in the South Jersey media market after having lived
and worked here all his life, Pustizzi said.
Prior to joining SNJ Today, Isabella worked as

Christopher T. Marron of Galloway Township also
recently joined the SNJ Today team as a Staff
Accountant. Marron reports to Frank DiMauro, SNJ Todays Chief Operating and
Financial Officer. As Staff Accountant, he will support DiMauro in maintaining the
financial business records for the Millville-based media services company.
Marron, also a graduate of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, previously worked for the private accounting firm of Teresa Marron, CPA, LLC in Ocean
County. He is the co-founder of The Richard Stockton Colleges Residence Hall
Association intended to improve the quality of student life at the college.

Kay (Laury) Fratto, 90, of Vineland, went

home to be with her Lord on January 2,
at home surrounded by her family. Kay
was born and raised in Vineland where
she remained a lifelong resident. She
was the last surviving child of the late
Lydia M. (Snyder) & Charles M. Laury.
She was also pre-deceased by the love
of her life of 58 years, her husband
Samuel C. Fratto, who died in 2003. Kay
was a graduate of Vineland High Class
of 1941. In her early years she worked at
Laury Heating Co. (her fathers business),
Prudential Insurance, Lapetina Jewelers,
and Halco Mailing service, where she
was the Executive Secretary. She was a
member of Calvary Assembly in
Williamstown for 22 years and Full
Gospel Assembly (founded by her
grandparents) in Vineland for 68 years.
Joseph A. Lamanteer, Sr., 71 of Buena
Vista Twp., passed away December 25,
with family by his side. Joseph graduated from Vineland High Class of 1961. He
retired from the I.B.E.W. Local 351 in
1997 after 35 years of service. During
retirement, he spent many happy days
on the golf course with family and
friendsand in the kitchen preparing his
favorite meals. Some of his greatest joys
came from being "Pop-Pop."
Ralph C. "Rip" Shivone, 64 of Vineland,
died peacefully at his home, on
December 29, from myelofibrosis. Rip
was born in Wilmington, DE on January
17, 1950, and graduated from
Salesianum School in Wilmington in
1968. He obtained a Bachelor's degree
from the University of Delaware. Before
he retired, Rip was the President of
Normative Strategies, Inc. He spent
most of his adult life guiding at-risk
youth and assisting people from being
welfare recipients to work recipients. Rip

was known as an exemplar mentor for
many of the professionals of the
Juvenile Justice Commission. He rejuvenated Atlantic Detention Center and
counted his success by juveniles who
passed through his programs and are
now productive citizens.
E. Elizabeth (Veltman) Donoflio, 79, of
Vineland, passed away on January 2, at
Inspira Medical Center after a brief illness. In her early 20s, Elizabeth overcame many serious medical conditions
and went on to become a loving, devoted
mother with a successful career. After 30
years, she retired from the Vineland
Developmental Center, where she worked
in Human Resources. She was devoted to
her church and enjoyed music, reading
and keeping up with current events.
Helen (Eichberg) Wolf, 92, of Atlantic
City and formerly of Vineland, passed
away at home on January 3, after an
extended illness. She was born in
Germany and moved to America in 1938
with her parents and sister. Helen was a
resident of Atlantic City since 2006 after
living in Vineland for 50 years. She
retired after more than 60 years in retail
sales. After retirement, she became a
librarian at Beth Israel Library. Helen
was a longtime member of Beth Israel
Congregation, Bat Ami Chapter of
Hadassah, and the Hebrew Women's
Benevolent Society. She was also a volunteer at Bishop McCarthy Residence,
after her husband and mother were residents there.
Daniel T. Caregnato Sr, 81, of Buena
Vista Twp., passed away on January 4,
at home after a lengthy illness. Daniel
was born in Camden, NJ. After serving
in the US Army, he was employed by Ed
Campbell Co. and was plant manager for

the Formigli Corp. and High Industries
Concrete Structures. He resided in
Buena Vista Twp. for over 46 years
where he served as Township Treasurer
for several years. Dan enjoyed going to
the casinos, Sunday dinners with his
family, the Yankees and watching his
grandchildren's baseball games.
Jesusa Ramos (Torres), 71, community
activist of Vineland, was called home to
Paradise on January 5. She was born in
Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. In the early 1970s,
she settled her family in Vineland and
soon after became a Hispanic pioneer in
the community. Without hesitation others needs were met before hers, gaining
her the matriarch role in the family.
John Hanuska, 91, of Vineland, passed
away at home on January 6. John was
born in Trenton, NJ to the late John and
Louise Hanuska. He attended Trenton
Central High School. After graduation,
he served honorably in the U.S. Army
from 1943 to 1945 with the Combat
Engineers in Africa and Italy. John was a
member of the NJ State Police, retiring
as a Staff Sergeant after 23 years of
service. He went on to become the
Director of Security for National Freight
Inc. He was a member of the American
Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
Charles Hughes MacDade, 90, of
Vineland, passed away on January 2, at
Jefferson University Hospital. He was
born in Norristown, PA and raised in
Vineland where he remained a lifelong
resident. Charlie was a graduate of
Vineland High Class of 1943. Before
retiring in 1984 with 41 years of service,
Charles was employed as the Order
Entry & Billing Supervisor for the
Owens-Illinois Kimble Glass Co,
Vineland. He was a member of the
Church of the Resurrection-Trinity
Episcopal Church, Vineland, NJ.

Advice on how to acquire healthful recipes.
12 small round potatoes

46 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
Garlic powder, to taste
Sea salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
Dried or fresh parsley, to taste
Place potatoes in a pot of cold salted
water (enough to completely cover potatoes)
and bring to a boil. Cook potatoes until they
are fork-tender. On a baking pan, generously
drizzle olive oil, then place cooked and
drained potatoes on cookie sheet, leaving
plenty of room between each potato. With a
potato masher, gently press down each potato until slightly mashed, rotate masher 90
degrees and mash potatoes again. Drizzle
tops of each crushed potato with more olive
oil, then sprinkle with garlic powder, sea
salt, fresh ground black and parsley. Place
potatoes under broiler until crispy on top.

Dr. Brewer found many opportunities for the exercise

of his intellect, and his benevolent disposition.
harles Brewer may not have

been the first physician to settle
here after serving in the army,
but he brought with him one of
the most fascinating military careers a
Vineland resident could have.
After receiving his undergraduate
degree in the Arts from St. Johns College
in 1852 and his medical degree from the
University of Maryland in 1855, Brewer
served in the U.S. Army for five years, during which he was involved in the rescue of
16 children in Utah, survivors of the
Mountain Meadows massacre. But following his January 1861 marriage to Maria
Pendleton Cooke, the second daughter of
General Philip St. George Cooke, he
resigned his commission during a visit to
his wifes relatives in Virginia and then, in
what might be perceived as an act of
betrayal, immediately joined the Medical
Corp of the Confederate Army.
Brewers family had been one of the
most prominent in Maryland since colonial
days, according to an entry sourced from
the Cumberland County Biographical Review
and contained in the 1903 Vineland
Historical and Antiquarian Society
(VHAS) publication The Early Physicians
of Vineland, N.J. Brewers father had been a
lawyer, a member of the legislature and a
Circuit Court judge as well as man of high
culture and fine taste, and a progressive and
public-spirited citizen. He was an outspoken supporter of the war for the Union.
Entering the Confederate forces,
Brewer must have met with considerable
criticism from his family and friends, but
his decision ultimately seems to have been
a means of serving the Union while wearing a gray uniform. He immediately
became an inspector of prison camps
where captured Federal soldiers faced
food shortage and poor conditions.
Brewers inspections resulted in recommendations that the men be returned to
the Federal government, which is exactly
what happened. At the conclusion of the
war, according to the VHAS pamphlet, he
was charged with the duty of transferring
to the Federal authorities, the eight thousand sick and wounded left in the hospitals at Richmond.
Brewer returned to his native Maryland
and continued his medical practice but,

after five years, the workload had taken its
toll on the 38-year-old physician, and he
sought a change in location and occupation.
His decision was to move himself and his
family to Vineland and to become a farmer.
The Brewers arrived in Vineland in
1870 and the farm work began immediately. After a few years, however, the good
doctor returned to his medical practice,
rejuvenated and eager to treat his fellow
townsfolk. According to The Early
Physicians of Vineland, Dr. Brewer found,
besides the work of his profession, many
opportunities for the exercise of his intellectual powers, and his benevolent disposition, in the kind of work for which he was
especially fitted. He was called early and
often, in one way or another, to duties and
positions of responsibility in Vineland, and
in Cumberland County, and sometimes to
such as reach a much wider range.
He became a lay reader of Trinity P. E.
Church, a Sunday school superintendent,
president of both the Cumberland County
Sunday-School Association and the Young
Men's Christian Association of Vineland, a
member of the County Bible Society and a
member of the State Charities Association.
In addition, his VHAS biography entry
reports that he was, for some years, an
active member of the Board of Health of
Vineland. In 1882, he was elected coroner
of Cumberland County. In 1887 he was
appointed postmaster of Vineland, holding
the office during the last half of the first
Cleveland administration, much to the
satisfaction of the community.
Brewers work during the Civil War
never seems to have left him in his civilian
life since he was twice appointed by the
Governor of the State as its official representative to the National Prison Congress,
which was held in Baltimore and Chicago
and he became a member of the National
Prison Association. The VHAS pamphlet
declares that he was interested in all that
pertains to criminology and prison reformation. These various associations and
appointments clearly indicate the benevolence of his disposition and his devotion
to whatever promises good to his fellow
beings, and especially to the erring and
the suffering. I
One Sweet Cookie

all of us smile, said Eloise
Sulzman, owner of the
Cocker Spaniel therapy
dog who warmed everyones heart with
her gentle love.
An unofficial birth date of March 4,
1999, was calculated when Cookie was rescued by Bud and Eloise Sulzman in
December, 1999, at about age eight months.
The first order of business for Cookie was
an appointment with the veterinarian.
Among other things, Cookie needed to be
treated for a nasty case of the mange. The
Sulzmans already had two Brittany
Spaniels at their home on Myrtle Street
and Bud had begun a rescue for Brittanys.
The couple agreed to answer the call to go
to Heislerville to rescue Cookie on the
condition that theirs was a foster home

until a permanent one was found.
Before long, Cookie made known she
had a different plan for her future. Happy
and eager to call the cozy house of Bud
and Eloise home, Cookie simply fixed her
loving gaze into the eyes of her new
human parents, and it was no contest that
Cookie was in her fur-ever home.
Cookie flourished under the nurturing
care of her family. It wasnt until about
age four that Cookies exceptional personality and abilities were completely
revealed. In 2003 a new program called
Puppy Tales was introduced at the
Vineland Public Library. To encourage
children to read, a Puppy Tales dog had
to be, above all else, a good listener.
Cookie proved to be one of the best.

Cookie was registered, tested, insured and
passed the American Kennel Club Canine
Good Citizen test. Former Vineland Public
Library Community Relations Coordinator
Anita Lupcho modeled Puppy Tales on
the national Reading Education Assistance
Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program.
Irresistible, obedient and impeccably
groomed, Cookie exuded a sense of calm.
What an inspiration to children of all ages!
Always eager to listen to a child read and
with perfectly good manners, Cookie
showed the meaning of love.
Great anxiety was caused in April 2014
when Cookie wandered away from her
yard. The search for Cookie went on for
three fretful days. Through the efforts and
prayers of many, Cookie was found and
returned to her parents.
In addition to the Vineland Library,
Cookie frequently spent her time visiting
senior citizen residences and children in
community classrooms. As a Licensed
Clinical Social Worker, Eloise and Cookie
often worked together during client therapy sessions.
This wonderful Cocker Spaniel dog,
Cookie, who made everyone smile, died on
September 6, 2014 at age 15. She was buried
on September 14 at Petland Cemetery,
Vineland. Her grave marker reads
CookieEloises Partner.
Although Cookie was one-of-a-kind
and clearly irreplaceable, we plan to open
our home in her memory to another white
and orange Cocker Spaniel in Spring, 2015,
Eloise said.
Throughout her lifetime, Cookie earned
and received many accolades, certificates of
accomplishments and loving letters from
those who knew her. Memories of One
Sweet Cookie are on display during
January and February at the Vineland
Public Library. I
