Renegades 3-1 victory over the Golden Eagles in this freshman matchup. For another photo, please

Walk the walk is the motto of

Seneca High School Substance
Awareness Coordinator Erin
Lawler, who was recently selected
as the 2015 W. Cary Edwards State
Volunteer of the Year by the Governors Council on Alcoholism
and Drug Abuse.
I educate my students about
local trends with substances and
the importance of being a role
model by connecting their words
with their actions, Lawler said.
Lawler believes life is very
short, so she tries to instill the
quality of giving back to the community into her students.
For me, as the substance coordinator, I believe in leading by example, and if Im not doing that
as well, then what kind of leader
am I? Lawler said.
Lawler was nominated by the
Tabernacle Municipal Alliance
for her close work with the organization in developing and initiat-

ing drug and

alcohol
programs
for
Seneca
and
nearby
elementary and
middle
schools.
The
program she was
specifically
LAWLER
recognized for
and that has
brought a great deal of success to
her career is the Drug Squad.
The program has been running
for 11 years. Lawler created it to
generate positive peer pressure,
reinforce the power of good decision-making and encourage students to become a part of a supportive and fun drug- and alcoholfree culture.
Our kids are subjected to so
much peer pressure in terms of
drinking and partying. My intention was to shift gears and do the

opposite of that by enforcing that
drugs and alcohol are actually not
the cool thing to be a part of,
Lawler said.
In the program, high school
students undergo training on the
negative effects of drugs and then
present their findings to students
in schools throughout South Jersey.
The Drug Squad also includes a significant community
service component by exposing
students to things such as a Camden soup kitchen and a homeless
outreach center in Philadelphia
to allow them the opportunity to
witness some negative effects of
drugs and alcohol first hand.
The program is rapidly growing, as Lawler now gets 80-100 students to interview each year, and
she selects the top 30. Kids in
eighth grade who want to be a
part of the group after hearing
about it through older siblings
are now reaching out to Lawler as

Schwering Hardware
Schwerings Hardware first
opened its doors for business
on Sept. 25, 1922. H.C. Schwering built and opened a generalgoods store called Schwerings
Wayside Hardware. Grandpop
sold products as varied as toys
and radio tubes to electric
clothes washing machines, a
brand-new item for that era!
Our famous horse and buggy
(where our logo comes from)
first showed up in the 1960s.
Over the years, some of our
products have changed, but not
our dedication to customers.
We started selling gas logs and
fireplaces more than 15 years
ago. Today we have pellet

stoves, wood stoves and inserts, electric linear fireplaces

and glass fireplace doors. We
are also a full line old fashion
hardware store that repairs
lamps, screens and windows,
cuts glass and keys and more!
While you wont find the chickens, goats, and beehives that
once lived out back, you will
find quality products in a convenient, friendly atmosphere,
fair price and unparalleled
service. We are still a familyowned business committed to
helping our customers with
their hearth and hardware
needs. Stop in soon, youll be
glad you did.

Tourism in New Jersey isnt just about the Shore

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

hen you think about

tourism in New Jersey, the
first thing that pops into
your mind, most likely, is the Shore.
And why shouldnt it be? There is so
much focus on our coastline, and so
much of our lives here revolve around
the summertime rush to the beach.
But there is so much more our state
has to offer, and these other offerings
are on display front and center during
October.
Farms in New Jersey are popular
places for what has come to be known
as agritourism a booming industry
that involves any agriculturally-based
operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm. New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason, and there are
multiple farms in many places
throughout our state, both in more

rural places and in not-so-rural places

as well.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno toured some
local farms last week to help promote
the agritourism industry, which is
growing each year. According to the
state Department of Agriculture, New
Jersey ranks ninth in the nation in
agritourism, bringing in more than
$18 million per year.
As farms look for new ways to grow
revenue, they not only look for secondary crops to grow but also toward
runoff revenue streams from traditional tourism areas such as apple and

pumpkin picking to hayrides, corn

mazes and farm tours.
October in New Jersey is one of the
best months to visit a farm. Apples are
ready to be plucked off the trees and
eaten raw or baked into delectable
pies. Pumpkins and gourds are ready
to be picked from the ground and used
as decorations for Halloween-inspired
themes inside and outside houses.
And farm stands are vibrant with fall
wreaths, hay, scarecrows and apple
cider.
Farming is such an important sector to our states economy and our
states image. So put on a pair of jeans,
grab a hoodie and head out to a local
farm this month. If you havent experienced agritourism in New Jersey
yet, October is the best month to do it.
Enjoy the season!

Tabernacle moves toward naming Fire Company No. 1

volunteer fire-fighting organization of township
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
At last weeks Tabernacle Township
Committee meeting, the first public hearing was held for an ordinance that would
officially designate Tabernacle Township
Fire Company No. 1 as the volunteer firefighting organization of Tabernacle.
The second reading of the ordinance
will be held during the next township committee meeting on Oct. 26.
Paperwork was already completed before the state in December to dissolve the
Medford Farms Fire Company, which previously filled the role of the fire company
for Tabernacle.
That ordinance was passed in December and that appointed the Tabernacle Fire

Company as our firefighting organization.

We just need to pass a resolution that
matched that of the previous fire company
when they were instated, Township Administrator Doug Cramer said.
Deputy Mayor Richard Franzen and
Committeeman Stephen Lee IV sat down
with the Tabernacle Fire Company and
hammered out an agreement that everyone
was happy with, according to Cramer.
We knew we needed a facility use
agreement. We both got what we needed

and a feel for what both sides were looking

for, Cramer said.
As stated on its website, the Tabernacle
Fire Company is dedicated to serving the
residents of Tabernacle Township and surrounding communities. Its primary response area is Tabernacle Township and
the 7,000 residents within, but the group is
often called upon to assist within surrounding communities as well.

well.
The goal of this great group of
kids is to ultimately not just
change their lives but to create a
domino effect and to also change
everyone elses with their strong
morals, Lawler said.
Lawler also has worked with
the Tabernacle Municipal Alliance in supporting the Seneca
After Prom Lock-in Party and the
Seneca Grad Bash, two drug- and
alcohol-free events sponsored by
the Seneca Parents Group.

Lawler could not say enough

about the alliances role in what
the school does with the kids.
They provide that sort of collaboration between school and
community and have been a critical part of what we do, Lawler
said. Theyve allowed the substance programs to thrive because of the funding that they
have provided.
According to the Governors
Council on Alcoholism and Drug
Abuse website, the grassroots network of alliances and its volunteers are more critical than ever
in helping to communicate and
execute the systems necessary to
evoke environmental change in

communities across New Jersey.

Lawler said it is not only important to communicate these
principles to the students but also
to have a relationship with them
so they are listening to someone
they respect and can confide in.
Lawler was honored at a ceremony at the Mercer County Community College Conference Center in West Windsor on Thursday,
Sept. 24.
Its such an honor, Lawler
said. Im honored to be in phenomenal company of the other recipients of this award who are
also doing amazing things to combat substance abuse in their respective communities.
