Hardware
Processor/Memory
All IM series scales use an ARM,
32-bit processor.
All user-programmable data
is stored in reprogrammable
Flash memory. The number of
PLUs supported is dependant
on the average text size, number
of totals used etc. Typically,
there will be sufficient memory
for at least 6000 PLUs
The following table clearly lists
the average text size in relation
to the number of PLUs available.
The table shows PLU capacity
with two totals types per PLU
and eight totals types per PLU,
according to different average
text size. Up to 12 totals types
could be stored per PLU (sales,
counter, pre-pack, override,
return and promotions). Each
total type can be stored across
two reporting periods.
Other factors which affect PLU
memory size include:
Receipt memory
Transaction per receipt memory
Diagnostic log size
Traceability record memory
Traceability totals memory
There is an additional, separate
flash memory which is used for
the application software and
factory default data. This ensures
PLU memory capacity remains
unaffected by software updates.

Printers
The IM series printer is a heavy
duty label and receipt printer,
with a single motor driving both
the paper feed and paper rewind
systems. Receipt tally roll, die
cut labels or continuous sticky
paper can be used.
The paper roll is loaded onto
the spindle and the paper
passed through the large
aperture at the rear of the open
print mechanism. The single
large aperture through which the
paper is fed at the rear of the
print mechanism means paper
changes are quick and simple
and makes it virtually impossible
to feed the paper through the
printer incorrectly.
To ensure the print head can be
easily cleaned, the print head is
raised well clear of the lower
body when in the open position
ensuring good access. This easy
maintenance feature encourages
cleaning to be carried out and the
life of the print head optimised.
The printer also auto-rewinds
before printin commences,
ensuring a minimum of dead
space on the label or receipt.

Keyboards
The IM series keyboards fitted
to the scale are hard-wearing,
touch sensitive, wipe clean
keyboards with raised preprogrammed and digit keys.
The raised keys give a near
tactile feel when used and give
the operator feedback that their
finger is located correctly on
the key.
The IM series keyboard is
available in two options, a 66
key variant for all versions where
the display and keyboard are
mounted together, and an 84
key variant for the IM 202 head
up display version.
The raised section of the
keyboard has a number of preprogrammed functions assigned
to it (eg: 0-9, Clear, Test, Enter,
Total / Print, Add, Tare, etc).
Each variant also has a
user-programmable area of 42
(IM100, 300, 400, 500) and 60
(IM202) keys.
The user programmable areas
comprise of hard-wearing, tearresistant transparent pockets
under which a user-defined
insert may be slotted into place.
Four tough, flexible plastic
inserts are supplied with the
scale. They can be written on
with a non-permanent felt
marker which can be erased if a
change to the user-programmed
key is made in the future. The
reverse side of the insert
contains all keys required when
programming the scale.

Power Supply
The IM scale has an external
plug-mounted power supply
rated at 100V/60Hz to
240V/50Hz. This connects to
the underside of the scale. The
cable can be held in a clip at the
rear of the underside to provide
strain relief on the DC connector.
The use of the external power
supply makes the scale a low
voltage device, and reduces
power consumption.
All variants are supplied with
interchangeable plug heads to
suit the vast majority of socket
types worldwide. Additionally,
the plug head can be removed
and a flying lead attached to the
IEC C7 power connection of the
power supply. This is useful if
the power cable is of insufficient
length or there is insufficient
space at the power socket for
the power supply.
Scale Interfaces
USB Ports
All models feature two USB
ports, with USB V.1.1 being
supported. On IM 100, 202, 300
and 400 models, one port is
located beneath the scale, one
is located in the printer
compartment. Typically, the port
located beneath the scale may
be used for scanner input.
The port located in the printer
compartment is typically used
for data transfer with a USB
memory stick.
Inter-scale Network
and Host Computer
Interfaces
A maximum of 10 scales may
be linked together in a single
network.
All communications are based
on standard 10/100-BaseT
Ethernet networking. Ethernet
cabling standard IEEE802.3
defines cable type, length and
equipment.
TCP/IP is the language or
protocol, by which all devices
communicate.
Within a single network, scales
are configured in a Client/Server
configuration, with all scales
sharing the same Ethernet port
address.
Any scale can be configured as
the Server and all scales contain
the full PLU and data file.
As all scales are connected
directly into an Ethernet hub,
no wiring short-circuit can bring
down the scale network, adding
significantly to network
resilience.
IM Series
RF Communications
IM series scales are compatible
with most common Spread
Spectrum Radio Frequency
systems.
This enables the use of RF for
communication between the
PC located in the management
office and the counter scales
in the store.
Multiple network configurations
are possible using either only
RF or combinations of RF and
direct cabling communications.
For further information, see the
IM series RF Communications
Data specification sheet.
System Resilience
and Networking
In both LAN and RF networks,
the back-up server mirrors the
main server and automatically
takes control if the main server
fails. When the communication
with the server is restored,
transactions are automatically
recollected from local mode and
the totals are regenerated.
Configurable Network Error
Alarm An audible alarm warning
of network errors can be
disabled in sales mode.
A flashing message appears
on the vendor display when
the scale is experiencing
communication problems.
IM Series
Software
This section defines version 7
software operation of the IM
series system scales.
Operating Modes
Label Mode
IM series scales operating in
label mode are generally used
for single item, weighed or
non-weighed transactions.
In label mode, the system can
be set to Print on Request
(press the Print or Operator
keys) or Immediate (as soon
as the weight is steady).
Self-Service Mode
IM series scales can be set into
self-service mode where they
are intended for the general
public to weigh and label their
own produce. When in selfservice mode, IM series scales
prompt the customer to select
item from the keyboard, before
placing the produce on the scale
and pressing the print key to
print the label.
By setting the scale to print
immediate, the label can
automatically be issued after the
produce is on the scale, without
having to press the print key.
Pre-pack
Pre-pack mode enables a
number of consecutive labels to
be printed for each selected
item. For this reason, the
selected item - along with any
tare details, are retained until
cleared.
In general, an item is selected in
the standard way and the details
are automatically fixed - with a
label being printed each time the
weight changes and then returns
to a steady weight again.
IM Series
PLU Search Mode
By assigning the PLU search
key to the keyboard, it is
possible to search for PLUs
from the scales memory.
Searches may be performed
numerically or alpha-numerically.
System Data
System data is that which is
managed and held for the
complete IM series network.
This data can be created or
edited at any scale (or within
MX050, MX400, etc)), with the
data then copied to all scales
on that network.
Product
The following item maintenance
functions are available: change
price, create/edit PLU, delete
PLU and customise the PLU
data options.
For each product, the operator
can manage the following data
elements in create/edit PLU :
Department number, PLU
number, Label format, display
text of up to 30 characters, PLU
text 1 and 2, each of 1500
characters, tax ref. 1 and 2,
group number, unit price,price
base, promotion price, weight
quantity at which this takes
affect, tare ref. or proportional
tare %, date 1 type and value,
date 2 type and value, sales
message 1 ref., sales message
2 ref., logo, barcode
enable/disable and barcode
format ref., barcode/article
number, traceability on or off,
traceability scheme, nutri-panel,
and location on pre-set
keyboard.
The hand-held scanner may be
used to create or edit PLUs in
manager mode.
IM Series
To maximise efficiency of PLU
maintenance, the operator may
configure the actual fields
displayed to the user during
PLU maintenance, disabling
those which are not required
(e.g: remove label fields if the
scale is only to be used in
receipt operation).
Label and receipt text can be
programmed in font sizes
ranging from 1 to 8 and from
A to L.
See IM series Label Printing
Formats Specification for font
designs.
Promotions
A PLU may be programmed with
one of the following types of
promotion:
Price Promotion: Applicable to
both weighed and non-weighed
products and allows a 2nd price
to be automatically applied
when either a certain weight or
number of items of a product
are sold.
Weight Free Promotion:
Applies to weighed products
only and allows a configurable
amount of weight to be sold free
of charge, when the total weight
of the product is above
configurable amount of weight.
Items Free Promotion: Applies
to non-weighed products only
and allows a configurable
number of items to be sold
free of charge, when the total
number of items is above a
configurable number of items.
Discount Promotion:
Applicable to both weighed
and non-weighed products
and allows a discount value to
be automatically applied to the
transaction value when a certain
weight or number of items
are sold.
Departments
You can create up to 10
departments each having a 20
character description.
All products are allocated to a
specific department.
Messages
Up to 99 scrolling or flashing
messages may be programmed,
of up to 200 characters each.
You can assign each scale to
display one of these messages.
Up to 20 sales messages may
be programmed, and these can
be called-in to print on labels,
where a field has been set up for
this purpose.
Tables
The following data tables can
be programmed.
Tax
3 tax rates can be programmed,
with up to two tax rates being
assigned to PLUs.
Tares
Up to 10 tare weights can be
programmed which can be
assigned to PLUs for use as
preset tare values or assigned
to keys for recall in normal
operating mode.
A tare interlock can be used to
ensure a label is only printed if a
tare has been selected.
Tares may be configured as selfcancelling (one-shot) or fixed.
Additionally, semi-selfcancelling, cumulative,
accelerating or proportional
tares may be programmed.
Payment Tables
Payment tables includes local
cash, foreign cash, credit
card, account, coupon or
general. A selection of payment
types are available by scrolling
with the arrow keys, entry is
accepted by pressing the
enter key.
Discount Tables
A maximum of 9 discount rates
are programmable. A maximum
of 16 displayed characters may
be entered for describing the
discount rate. The discount
value may be disabled or
entered as a percentage or
value. The security level is
applied for discount protection
when operating the scale in
sales mode.
Add Label
You can assign one of the
standard label formats to be
printed as the add label format,
or this can be set to print in a
receipt style.
Logos
Up to 5 different logos may be
stored and used. Logos are
loaded into M series scales
using MX050. A logo report can
be printed showing all logos
stored in the scale. The scale
contains the statutory safe
handling and nutritional data
logos required by law in the
United States of America by
default.
Logos can be used for a variety
of applications including printing
on labels or receipts as store
logos, and for promotional
purposes.
IM Series
Header Message
(for Receipts Only)
The message printed at the top
of receipts can be programmed
at any scale and is transmitted
to all scales in a system,
ensuring all machines print
identical headers.
The header message has up to
200 characters of text and may
be printed multi-line, across the
full width of the receipt.
A logo can also be used in
addition to, or instead of, the
header message and is printed
at the top of the receipt.
Trailer Message
(for Receipts Only)
The trailer message printed
at the bottom of receipts is
programmed at any scale and
is transmitted to all scales in a
system, ensuring all machines
print identical footers.
The trailer message has up to
200 characters of text and may
be printed multi-line, across the
full width of the receipt.
A logo can also be used in
addition to, or instead of, the
trailer message and is printed
at the bottom of the receipt.
Re-Pricing
The re-pricing mode is a
non-PLU associated method of
printing labels, with pricing and
barcode information which are
adhered over a products
original price and barcode
information. The re-price
function requires setting up
with default label information,
barcode format, whether packs
will be weighed and if totals are
required to be stored or not.
IM Series
Traceability
IM series scales feature
comprehensive options for
all types of traceability
requirements. Up to three
different traceability schemes
may be individually
programmed, allowing
associated products to be
tracked through their supply
chains. Scheme options include
the ability to print user-defined
trace information, manual or
scannable methods of data
input and the ability to
reproduce traceability
passports. All schemes can be
used in either label or receipt
modes, allowing counter or
pre-pack service operation.
Security Levels
Programming Security Levels
for Management Functions
The system has 3 security
levels: 0 - no security up to
2 - highest level.
Functions assigned to security
level of 0 will have no security
ie: they can be accessed by
any user.
Each operator can be given
security level 0 - 3. Every
exceptional sales function (e.g.
Void, Refund) can be set to
require PIN authentication: level
0 - 3. If set > 0 for a selected
function, system prompts for
the Operator number then the
PIN code.
If the Operator security level is
greater or equal to the function
level, the transaction will
proceed, but, if the operator
security level is less than the
function level, the scale prompts
for a supervisor.
All management functions
operate on similar security
levels.
10
System Functions
Audit Mode
Audit mode is either enabled or
disabled in manager mode.
Audit mode contains functions
like filtering, server buffer, client
buffer, Audit Report and erase
Audit list.
The filtering option allows the
operator to select which printing
