Race to

story of
triumph
NEW play Gladiator telling
the story of Welsh bike champion Arthur Linton comes to
the Torch on Thursday.
The play is written by Laurence Allan and produced
by ChainWorks Productions
with Pembrokeshire audiences sure to recognise Francesca Goodridge who plays Alex
in Gladiator.
The production follows the
story of Welsh world cycling
champion Arthur Linton who
won the Bordeaux to Paris
bike race in 1895.
This was before Wales
could claim its first cycling
world champion in the Modern Olympics and Tour De
France.
Within weeks of Arthurs
win he and his controversial
trainer, Choppy Warburton,
were embroiled in the sports
first drugs scandal and within
a year Arthur at the age of
twenty-four was dead.
Arthur was one of the Terrible Three, a trio of world
class cyclists from the Cynon Valley who took on the
worlds best and left behind
scandal, myth and memories
of the legendary first racing
bike The Gladiator.

Enjoy ballet full of farmyard comedy

The Royal Ballets glorious rural
comedy, La Fille mal garde, choreographed by Frederick Ashton will be
screened live into Theatr Mwldan.
Featuring an abundance of farmyard
merriment, chickens, haystacks, and
even a Shetland Pony, the pastoral
comedy tells the story of Lise, the
Widow Simones wayward daughter
in love with Colas, a young farmer,
who contrives to outwit her mothers
plans for a more advantageous marriage.
It was first performed in 1960 at the
Royal Opera House and inspired by
Ashtons love of the Sussex countryside.
La Fille mal garde showcases a
wealth of delightful and challenging
choreography.
The virtuoso dancing has colourful
injections of folk dancing and music
hall traditions, noticeably seen in the
famous Widow Simone clog dance
and the symbolic ribbon pas de deux.
La Fille mal garde is the final ballet
of the 2014/15 Royal Opera House
Live Cinema Season and the perfect
production to welcome the arrival of
summer with its sunny rural designs
and colourful costumes translating to
the silver screen across the world.
The ballet will be screened live on
Tuesday, May 5 at 7.15pm.
Tickets for Royal Ballet screenings
are 16 (15) and are available now
from Mwldans Box Office on 01239
621200 and alternatively online by
visiting mwldan.co.uk.

Fiennes leads epic

romantic comedy
ACTOR Ralph Fiennes
returns to the National
as Jack Tanner in Simon
Godwins reinvention of
Bernard Shaws witty, provocative classic, Man And
Superman.
But theatre fans do not have
to travel to London to see the
show.
The performance will be
screened live via satellite
to theatres across the UK
including Theatr Mwldan,
Cardigan and the Torch
Theatre in Milford Haven on
Thursday, May, 14 at 6.45pm.
The stellar cast of the performance also includes Tim
McMullan and Indira Varma,
with the production designed
by Christopher Oram, lighting by James Farncombe,
music by Michael Bruce,
movement by Jonathan Goddard and sound by Christopher Shutt.
Man and superman is a
romantic comedy, an epic
fairytale and a fiery philosophical debate that asks
fundamental questions about
how we live.
Jack Tanner, celebrated
radical thinker and rich
bachelor, seems an unlikely
choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann.

Man and Superman starring Ralph Fiennes is being broadcast by NT Live

But she takes it in her assured
stride and despite the love of a
poet, she decides to marry and
tame this dazzling revolutionary.
Tanner, appalled by the whiff
of domesticity, is tipped off by
his chauffeur and flees to Spain,
where he is captured by bandits
and meets The Devil.
An extraordinary dream-debate
of heaven versus hell ensues.
Ralph Fiennes' extensive film
appearances include The Grand
Budapest Hotel,
Skyfall, Voldemort in the Harry
Potter films, The Constant Gardener, The English Patient and

Schindlers List.
Indira Varmas recent theatre
work includes Titus Andronicus (Shakespeares Globe), The
Hothouse
(Trafalgar Studios) and Dance of
Death and Twelfth Night (Donmar Warehouse).

Recital launches summer

season in elegant style
PAUL ISRAEL
At St Tudwal's Church
Review by: Tom Sparkes
MUSIC for a Summer
Evening it said on my
ticket, and I could almost
believe it as I stood in the
warm sun-washed grounds
of St. Tudwals Church in
Llanstadwell last Sunday
afternoon.
I had been invited to 2015s
opening concert of the summer evening series; a recital
by pianist Paul Israel.
Paul is a young British
concert pianist with an
enviable talent. He began
learning the piano at the
age of seven and after many
years of hard graft gained
a first class BA Degree in
music from the University
of Bristol and later a Master
of Arts Degree in piano
performance from the Royal
Welsh College of Music and
Drama.
Sundays concert was
evidence aplenty that these
qualifications are not flippantly grantedevery letter
after Paul Israels name has
been earned in spades.
The first piece of the recital was Felix Mendelssohns
Rondo Capriccioso, one of
his most advanced compositions at the time.
This piece has long been a
favourite of mine not least
because of the haunting
shift from major to minor
where the Andante moves
into the Presto, but because
of the fire and flare found
in the intricate phrasing
of the latter section. Paul
played the Presto with an
abundance of fluidity and
confidence.
The phrasing was emotive,
and the technical passages
performed with absolute
precision. Coupled with the
gorgeous warm tones of St.

Tudwals grand piano and

the floating acoustics of
the pitched wooden ceiling
it made a fantastic feast
of sound. Indeed, within a
few minutes I had forgotten
both to take a photograph
for this article and about my
wooden-pew-numb-behind!
The second piece was
Beethovens Piano Sonata
No.11 in B Flat. Poetically,
Beethoven was 24 years
old when he composed this
and Paul Israel the same
age as he performed in St.
Tudwals Church.
This sonata marked the
end of Beethovens high

classicism era, and really is

a crowning glory. The composer himself declared die
Sonate hat sich gewaschen
which roughly translates
as the sonata has washed
itself , a peculiar statement
which eminent musicologist Donald Tovey likens to
the English saying takes
the cake. Paul played the
elegant adagio to a completely silent room. It was
an incredibly passionate
performance, although Paul
remained almost motionless, eyes closed, shoulders
hunched over the keys.
To finish, Chopins Bal-

lade No1. In G Minor, a formidable piece with an even

more formidable heritage.
Schumann declared it
best of all Chopins compositions, and Brahms
and Liszt went on to write
their own ballades because
of it. Paul gave another atmospheric interpretation,
and the filmic passages
complemented the surroundings to perfection.
When I arrived home I
eyed the humble upright
piano in the corner of
my lounge with a wash
of trepidation. I will have
to wait until Pauls final

notes of Chopins Ballade

have entirely faded from
my memory before beginning my own practice once
more. If the remainder
of the Music for a Summer Evening series is as
impressive and fulfilling
as this, then it will prove
to be a very, very exciting
tradition indeed.
The next concert in St.
Tudwals will be given
by Anastasiya Kryvanos
playing classical guitar on
May 31.
