Community Council

Two high ranking police officers, Chief Inspector William Mitchell and Inspector William Blair of Force Communications, attended the CC AGM on to inform people on how the new police communications operate.

Gone are bits of paper, the new system is totally computerised. This will give the Control Room a quick and efficient way to communicate with officers on patrol and, just as importantly, between members of the public and the police.

Govan. All calls to the police are logged on computer. All information, names, the nature of the offence and so on, are detailed and can be referred to at any time, so patterns of crimes can be easily recognised.

Particularly impressive is the way the Communications Centres are in contact with the bobby on the beat. Police officers are equipped with an upto-the-minute mobile phone that can receive a whole host of information relevant to the call the officer is attending. Officers can also send a lot of information back to the Communication Centres.

The police are trying out new shift systems that will lead to more officers on the beat during Friday and Saturday nights. Earlier on in the meeting the new Community Council was voted into place. The officebearers now consist of:

Graeme Brown has taken on

the Planning brief, a position held previously, for many years, by Gill Renyolds.

Thanks were made for the work Gill had carried out over the years. The former Chairperson, David Arthur, remains on the committee. He stood down as Chairperson to stand as a candidate in next year's local government elections.

Ian Kennedy was elected as the first ever honorary member of the Community Council. The award is in recognition of his long service with the Council.

Newton of

Barr

While waiting for a bus recently I watched the traffic at Newton of Barr. It was very instructive.

During the five minutes: two vehicles ignored the red light, about a dozen drivers - including one driving a behemoth of a truck - were on the phone, most vehicles were exceeding the speed limit and one driver caught up with the news by reading the paper while he drove. I was glad when the bus turned up.

Lemonade Factory

Professor Mucklebrain has written with his idea for the now unused lemonade factory, the factory now the target for a community buy-out.

The professor has suggested that the factory be turned into a bus terminus. 'With' he writes 'the looming threat of global warming very much in the minds of politicians, many world leaders - except, alas, George W Bush - we should all be thinking of ways to reduce the amount of carbon we release into the atmosphere. One way to do this is by using public transport rather than a car.'

The professor goes on to say that a bus depot in the heart of the village makes sense. Buses could leave for Glasgow every hour, a bus could leave daily for Edinburgh, for Kilmarnock via Beith (though within spitting distance of Lochwinnoch, currently very difficult to get to if you don't have a car), a once a week bus to London is also something to consider.

St Winnoch' Singers at 10

Ten years ago this Christmas saw the first concert by the St Winnoch Singers. The choir had been founded a couple of months earlier.

The Christmas concert was a tentative beginning to the choir's performing career. During this first concert the choir sang a selection of seasonal numbers and served mulled wine during the interval.

Every year since that first concert the choir have given two concerts a year in the village. Most of the concerts were held in the Parish Church, but on a couple of occasions the McKillop Hall was the chosen venue, most notably when the choir performed Carl Orff s Carmina Burana for the first time.

During this concert the choir were joined by a contingent from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - as they have been in almost every concert.

Last year saw a peak in the choir's career when they performed Carl Jenkins's mass 'The Armed Man' in the Royal Concert Hall accompanied by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and other choirs from around the country. The composer conducted the choir

and the concert raised money for the charity Hope and Homes.

This year on Sunday 12 November the choir return again to the Royal Concert Hall to perform the Carl Jenkins 'Requiem', a new work by this very popular composer. Again Carl Jenkins will be at the podium. Money from the concert will be donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust a charity very close to the village. Tickets are available from the Booking Office. Coach leaves McKillop at 6.30pm. Leaves from Concert hall at approx iopm, Cost £5.00

The Play's the Thing

On Thursday, November 30 and Friday, December 1, in the McKillop Hall, Calder Drama Club presents a comedy for Christmas called 'The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Towns Women's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of a Christmas Carol'.

Tickets, for this very funny play, cost £6:00 adults £3:00 children. Doors open 7:00pm.

Lochwinnoch New year Dance will take place on the 1st January 2007, McKillop, featuring 'Freedom' Tickets on sale shortly, usual outlets.
