What Is Psychology?

Its Scope & Applications

Science is a complete body of knowledge arranged in a systematic order.

Psychology is both an academic and applied field, a biological science deals
with the behavior and minds of animals and Human beings both. Research in
psychology seeks to figure out and explain how we think, act and feel. As
many of us are aware of the fact that, a large part of psychology is devoted
to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues, but thats just the tip
of the iceberg when it comes to the application of psychology.
Psychology is the youngest of all sciences and still in development process.
Its ultimate aim is to study the laws of human nature and create better
understanding of human behavior and its experiences. Psychology has
extended its scope to all kinds of behavior whether normal or abnormal,
children or adults, animals or human beings, individuals or groups. The
psychologists examine phenomena which we call sensations, perceptions,
thoughts, volitions and emotions; they analyze them, classify them, and seek
to reduce them to the smallest number of fundamental activities. The chief
interest for mankind in psychology is due to the expectation that some
information as regards the nature of the soul itself can be thence derived;
there is another reason for the precise treatment of these metaphysical
problems here.
Because psychology is science, all fields of psychology rely on scientific
method. The scientific method is way of acquiring knowledge. This particular
method emphasizes the study of how real events are experienced through
ones senses a perspective known as Empiricism. The use of psychology
becomes more interesting and useful in our lives when psychologists conduct
basic research that seeks to solve everyday problems which brings in

Applied Psychology research. Many areas of our lives and society have been
influenced and changed by often overlooked application of psychological
principles. Mental health, organizational psychology, business management,
education, health, product design, ergonomics and law are just the few areas
that have been influenced by the application of psychological principles and
findings. The umbrella of applied psychology includes the areas of; clinical
psychology, counseling psychology, industrial and organizational psychology,
occupational health psychology, human factors, forensic psychology,
engineering psychology, school, sports and community psychology.
These applications can be applied in a simple case scenario, for example; a
small team of cognitive psychologists researching attention span. They like
many researchers at university using 18 year old undergrads as participants
for experiment. They collect statistically significant data and develop a
model for how to suddenly grab a persons attention. An applied psychologist
will take this concept and see how this newly model implements in their
particular sub-field. A human factor psychologist might use the cognitive
psychologists finding to develop a system that gets a driver attention
enabling the driver to avoid car-wrecks. Environmental psychologists might
use the same laboratory findings to attract students attention to a particular
area of the classroom thus increase learning. Applied psychology is being
implemented into peoples everyday lives, and improving their lives, though
it is rarely noticed or being credited as applied psychology.
