Saturday Sessions
Many activities were demonstrated in the workshop to explain concepts of force and simple
machines. Different types of simple machines were demonstrated to them. The students realized
the mechanical advantage of the various machines by measuring the effort required to lift the
load. They used the spring balance to measure the lessened effort required in simple machines
like inclined planes, various combination of pulleys, wheels and axels and levers. They enjoyed
measuring the effort required in various types of levers which were made by changing the position
of the fulcrums.
Students enjoyed the demonstration as it was informative, interactive and eye catching for them.
The event was held in the biology laboratory of the school in two simultaneous sessions of one hour each. The
sessions were attended by the students of two sections of class 6 and the science teachers of the school.
The sessions conducted by Mrs Fangaria included activities on force, pressure and wave motion. Students were
given an idea regarding the magnitude of force using a weighing machine. Newtons laws of motion were
demonstrated with simple activities. Air pressure is same in all directions; this was shown with the help of the
syringe. Dependence on water pressure on the depth was demonstrated using no cost plastic coke bottles. Blowing
into a big polyethene bag helped to demonstrate the Bernoullis theorem. Wave motion was shown using a long
line of straws stuck at equal distances with the help of a cello tape.
In the sessions conducted by Mrs Bharadwaj , eye catching demonstrations on propagation of light, scattering of
light, reflection and refraction of light, accommodation of eye etc mesmerized the students.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and learned a lot of physics in the process.
As part of the joint initiative taken by BVN-IAPT Anveshika and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan to hold a series of
activity based physics programs at KVs, the first program was held at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pitampura on Feb 28,
2014 for 80 students of class VIII of the afternoon shift of the school from 1pm to 3pm.
The program started with the students competing for the title of Mahabali by trying to blow big birthday balloons
in minimum trials and learning about the pressure games the moving air plays!! The student volunteers further
applied the concept to create paper rain using a whirly and newspaper chits. The next experiment glass over
candle jogged them out of their misconceptions. They loved the pipette fountain, manometer in the bucket,
multicoloured water column in the straw and the no cost densitometer the concepts on fluid pressure were
enjoyed thoroughly.
The chirping bird brought in the concept of sound from oscillations which was further demonstrated by water in
the pipe. An idea of wave propagation was given through an exhibit made of straws. Demonstrations on two kinds
of charges, conduction, induction and polar nature of water kept the young viewers hooked to the show. But what
mesmerised them the most was the LASER light show illustrating the invisibility of light, refraction, reflection and
total internal reflection.
All the while the young learners noted the observations made and the conclusions drawn, asked questions and
requested repeatedly to show the demos again and again, not wanting to let go. After the show, the students were
offered a chance to try their hands at some selected experiments and lo and behold - the whole room burst with
myriad colours of curiosity, fun and excitement! The young scientists wanted to try their hand at everything and
were unstoppable!
The students response was an eye opener for the resource persons Pragya Nopany & Sutapa Laha De and an
inspiration to march on!
The written feedbacks from the students further confirm how eager they are to have firsthand experiences of this
kind which drive the concepts straight home.
