Engineering Dreams: A Career in Any Stream of Engineering Is Equally Fruitful and Rewarding
Engineering, much like any other science, is a broad discipline which is often broken down into several
sub disciplines. These disciplines are concerned with differing areas of engineering work. Although initially
engineers will usually be trained in a specific discipline, throughout their careers they may become multidisciplined, having worked in several of the outlined areas.
1. AEROSPACE ENGINEERING
Aerospace engineers are concerned with design, analysis, construction, testing, and operation of flight
vehicles. The course is based on fundamentals of flu d dynamics, material science, propulsion, automatic
control and development of computer software.
2. AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING
The branch of engineering involved with the design of farm machinery, with soil management, land
development, and mechanization and automation of livestock farming, and with the efficient planting,
harvesting, storage, and processing of farm commodities.
3. AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING
These engineers are concerned with the design, planning, manufacture, repair, maintenance and up
gradation of vehicles. The engineer designs new models keeping in mind performance, cost, capacity and
durability.
4. BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The course provides training in Natural, Biological and Engineering sciences including relevant
computer and management subjects. Disciplines included are genetics, microbial biotechnology, cell
biology, molecular biology, immunology, enzyme technology, protein engineering, etc.
5. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
It is concerned with the chemical processes that turn raw materials into valuable products. The relevant
industries include refineries, petrochemical plants and units manufacturing polymers, paints drugs and
pharmaceuticals.
6. CIVIL ENGINEERING
These engineers are concerned with planning, research, survey and construction of buildings, roads
transportation systems, irrigation and power plants water supply and sewage and disposal plants, ports and
harbors, oil rigs etc.
7. COMPUTER ENGINEERING
It covers the study of the working parts of a computer (hardware) and the set of instructions, which
command computers to carry out certain functions (software). It involves study of computer languages
analysis of algorithms, image processing, digital communications and computer networks.
8. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
A branch of engineering that deals with the practical application of electricity especially as related to
Communications, the distribution of power, and the design and operation of machinery and equipment.
This branch is all about working with electronic devices and communication equipment, such as
transmitters and receivers, integrated circuits, microprocessors, satellite communication, wave
progression, microwave engineering and much more.
This course covers a complete spectrum of natural and man-made fibers with special reference to their
chemistry, procurement, physical structure and applications in various fields. Chemistry, synthesis and
applications of dyes and pigments are also studied with relevance to consumer demands and performance
properties. The fields of employment for graduates include hardcore textile industry, garment manufacturing,
dyestuff, R&D and marketing.
12. FOOD ENGINEERING
This involves the understanding of chemical, biochemical and microbial aspects of food. Students are
also taught how high quality products can be prepared and preserved for long-term storage and how the
storage conditions might affect the quality.
13. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
IT is at the core of managing the complex infrastructure of the modern world including systems such as
finance, trade and commerce, education as well as both public and private services. The major areas
covered are data warehousing and data mining, management information systems, telecommunications and
networking, web technologies and e-commerce.
14. INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING
It is a specialized branch of engineering, which deals with measurement techniques, measuring
instruments and control of process variables. It imparts deep knowledge of various instruments and their
operating principles, manufacturing method, functioning and calibration techniques. The major areas are
Process instrumentation, analytical instrumentation, biomedical instrumentation, Electronic instrumentation.
15. MARINE ENGINEERING
Marine engineers are responsible for the safe running of all engines, boilers, deck machinery of marine
ships and the maintenance and repair of all marine machinery. This includes checking for smooth
functioning of all steam engines, electric motors etc.
16. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Engineers here are concerned with all types of machinery and aspects of their mechanism and
functioning. The design, development, construction, production, installation and operations of all mechanical
systems in industries. They are also responsible for maintenance and repair. The major areas are
production, machine design, management, computer integrated tools and thermal machines. Experimental
or design projects in the final year help students conceive industrial R&D related problems.
17. METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING
A metallurgical engineer is concerned with the extraction of metals from ores, their refining and
purification and their fabrication into useful shapes by casting, joining and mechanical working and also the
study of physical and chemical properties of metals, their structures and formation of alloys.
