PART III SUMMARY OF COUNSELING
Appearance: You will maintain the standards outlined by the Academy and The Standard at all times. Take pride in your uniform and
wear it proudly. Be an example for other cadets to emulate. Remember, first impressions can at times be lasting impressions.
Formations: You will make all required formations. Should a situation arise in which you cannot attend a formation, ensure that your
cadet leadership is notified as soon as possible. Failure to be on time as with all issues will be dealt with according to the severity of the
situation. A simple rule to follow is, if you cant be on time, be early.
Discipline: Discipline takes many forms. The true measure of discipline is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. I expect
you to maintain your military bearing at all times.
Communication: Here at the SJNMA community and as cadets, effective communication is critical. I expect you to be prompt and honest
with me, as I will be with you. Some issues are open for discussion, others will require execution. Your views and opinions are important to
me and I expect you to share them with me. We all have different approaches and methods but we can all learn from each other.
Counseling: You will be counseled on a regular basis. The standard areas will include: The Four Pillars, positive attributes and
accomplishments, areas to sustain, areas that require improvement, and promotion potential.
Accountability/Responsibility: Remember to never just disappear! Always let your Chain of Command know where you are going.
Accept responsibility for your actions. Do not attempt to blame others or divert attention from an incident. Do not participate in the blame
game, it only wastes valuable time and destroys the team. Fix the problem with the failure in responsibility in a professional manner.
Goals: Simple, set them and achieve them. Put your goals in writing and watch them happen.
Platoon Leader Duties: The Platoon Leader is responsible for the discipline, welfare, morale, and control of all
subordinates. Supervises the Platoon Sergeant and Squad Leaders in the performance of assigned tasks.
Maintains the Platoon in an inspection-ready status at all times. Conducts spot inspections of individuals, platoon
equipment, and platoon areas for appearance, proper care, and preparedness for training. Disseminates all
necessary information to platoon members. Briefs the RFO on the status of the platoon. Maintains proper
accountability of platoon at all times. Ensures that all personnel comply with regulatory guidance. Leads by
example in the execution of all assigned duties according to The Standard.
Plan of Action: (Outlines actions that the subordinate will do after the counseling session to reach the agreed upon goal(s). The actions must
be specific enough to modify or maintain the subordinates behavior and include a specific time line for implementation and assessment (Part IV
below).)
During this counseling session we have discussed the Academys Four Pillars, your basic duties and responsibilities, your
short and long term goals, your expectations as a cadet first sergeant, and other related areas. During our next counseling
session, we will discuss your progress toward your goals. In the mean time, you will continue to execute to standard. Maintain
course and give a little more with every new day. We will sit down again and assess your progress before the end of the first
quarter.
Short-term goals:
Teach and enforce the standards in regards to 1 ST Platoon and Bravo Company.
Maintain passing grades in all classes.

Long-term goals:
