PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT
PRE-TENSIONER"
INFOID:0000000006598010
The Supplemental Restraint System such as AIR BAG and SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS AIR BAG and SEAT BELT of this
Service Manual.
The vehicle may be equipped with a passenger air bag deactivation switch. The switch is designed to turn off
the passenger air bag so that a rear-facing child restraint can be used in the front passenger seat, since no
rear seat exists where a rear-facing child restraint can be placed. The switch is located in the center of the
instrument panel, near the ashtray. When the switch is turned to the ON position, the passenger air bag is
enabled and could inflate for certain types of collision. When the switch is turned to the OFF position, the passenger air bag is disabled and does not inflate. A passenger air bag OFF indicator on the instrument panel illuminates when the passenger air bag is switched OFF. The driver air bag always remains enabled and is not
affected by the passenger air bag deactivation switch.
WARNING:
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see SRS AIR BAG.
Never use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness
connectors.
The vehicle may be equipped with a passenger air bag deactivation switch which can be operated by
the customer. When the passenger air bag is switched OFF, the passenger air bag is disabled and
does not inflate. When the passenger air bag is switched ON, the passenger air bag is enabled and
could inflate for certain types of collision. After SRS maintenance or repair, check that the passenger
air bag deactivation switch is in the same position (ON or OFF) as when the vehicle arrived for service.

BODY CONTROL SYSTEM : System Description
INFOID:0000000006598015
OUTLINE
BCM (Body Control Module) controls the various electrical components. It inputs the information required to
the control from CAN communication and the signal received from each switch and sensor.
BCM has combination switch reading function for reading the operation status of combination switches (light,
turn signal, wiper and washer) in addition to a function for controlling the operation of various electrical components. It also has the signal transmission function as the passed point of signal and the power saving control function that reduces the power consumption with the ignition switch OFF.
BCM is equipped with the diagnosis function that performs the diagnosis with CONSULT-III and various settings.

SYSTEM
[WITH INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM]
< SYSTEM DESCRIPTION >
BCM reads the status of the combination switch at 10 ms interval normally.
A
E
JPMIA0609GB
NOTE:
BCM reads the status of the combination switch at 60 ms interval when BCM is controlled at low power consumption control mode.
BCM operates as follows and judges the status of the combination switch.
It operates the transistor on OUTPUT side in the following order: OUTPUT 1 2 3 4 5, and outputs
voltage waveform.
The voltage waveform of OUTPUT corresponding to the formed circuit is input into the interface on INPUT
side if any (1 or more) switches are ON.
It reads this change of the voltage as the status signal of the combination switch.
BCS
JMMIA0326GB
Operation Example
In the following operation example, the combination of the status signals of the combination switch is replaced
as follows: INPUT 1 - 5 to 1 - 5 and OUTPUT 1 - 5 to A - E.
BCS-11
SYSTEM
[WITH INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM]
< SYSTEM DESCRIPTION >
The circuit between OUTPUT 4 and INPUT 5 is formed when the TAIL LAMP switch is turned ON.
JMMIA0379GB
BCM detects the combination switch status signal 5D when the signal of OUTPUT 4 is input to INPUT 5.
BCM judges that the TAIL LAMP switch is ON when the signal 5D is detected.
Example 2: When some switches (TURN RH switch, TAIL LAMP switch) are turned ON
The circuits between OUTPUT 1 and INPUT 5 and between OUTPUT 4 and INPUT 5 are formed when the
TURN RH switch and TAIL LAMP switch are turned ON.
JMMIA0380GB
BCM detects the combination switch status signal 5AD when the signals of OUTPUT 1 and OUTPUT 4 are
input to INPUT 5.
BCM judges that the TURN RH switch and TAIL LAMP switch are ON when the signal 5AD is detected.

DTC/CIRCUIT DIAGNOSIS
INFOID:0000000006598060
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time applications. It is an on-vehicle multiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Modern
vehicle is equipped with many electronic control unit, and each control unit shares information and links with
other control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected
with 2 communication lines (CAN H-line, CAN L-line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less
wiring. Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.
CAN Communication Signal Chart. Refer to LAN-31, "CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM : CAN Communication Signal Chart".

PRECAUTION
PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT
PRE-TENSIONER"
INFOID:0000000006627720
WARNING:
To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision that would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness
connectors.

BODY CONTROL SYSTEM : System Description
INFOID:0000000006627723
OUTLINE
BCM (Body Control Module) controls various electrical components. It receives the information required from
CAN communication and the signals received from each switch and sensor.
BCM has a combination switch reading function for reading the status of combination switches (light, turn
signal, wiper and washer) in addition to functions for controlling the operation of various electrical components. It also has a signal transmission function, for other systems, and a power consumption control function that reduces the power consumption with the ignition switch OFF.
BCM is equipped with a diagnosis function that operates with CONSULT-III and allows for various settings to
be changed.

Operation Example
BCS-101
SYSTEM
[WITHOUT INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM]
< SYSTEM DESCRIPTION >
In the following operation example, the combination of the status signals of the combination switch is replaced
as follows: INPUT 1 - 5 to 1 - 5 and OUTPUT 1 - 5 to A - E.
Example 1: When a switch (TAIL LAMP switch) is turned ON
The circuit between OUTPUT 4 and INPUT 5 is formed when the TAIL LAMP switch is turned ON.

INFOID:0000000006627758
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time applications. It is an on-vehicle multiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Modern
vehicle is equipped with many electronic control unit, and each control unit shares information and links with
other control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected
with 2 communication lines (CAN-H line, CAN-L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less
wiring. Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.
CAN Communication Signal Chart. Refer to LAN-31, "CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM : CAN Communication Signal Chart".
