Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine The Australi an
Standard, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

1.2.2 Bolts.
1.2.2.1 Bolta fastener with a head integral with the
shank and which is threaded at the opposite end.
1.2.2.2 Nominal length (l)the distance from the
bearing surface of the head to the extreme end of the
shank including any chamfer or radius.
1.2.2.3 Thread length (b)the difference between
the nominal length of the bolt and the distance
between the bearing surface of the head and the
nearest face of a nut with no internal chamfer
screwed as far as practicable onto the bolt by hand.
1.2.3 Studbolts.
1.2.3.1 Studbolt a fastener intended for flanges
threaded at both ends, or threaded for the whole of its
length intended for use with a nut at each end.
1.2.3.2 Nominal length (l).
(a) Metric seriesthe length of a studbolt including
the chamfer at each end (see Fig. 2.1).
(b) Inch seriesthe length of a studbolt excluding
the chamfer at each end (see Fig. 3.1).
1.2.3.3 Thread length.
(a) Metric seriesthe distance from the end of a
studbolt including the chamfer, to the last full
thread (see Fig. 2.1).
(b) Inch seriesthe distance from the end of a
studbolt excluding the chamfer, to the last full
thread (see Fig. 3.1).
1.2.3.4 Bodythe unthreaded centre portion of a
studbolt.
NO TE: Type a studbolt s (see Clause 2.3.1) have no body.
