iCell Activity
Directions to find App: Go to your App store and search for iCell. Download
the App called HudsonAlpha iCell
Once you have downloaded the app, take some time and explore each cell
(animal, plant, bacteria). Click on the parts of the cell to explore the
organelles further and use zooming features to get a closer look. The cells
shown are 3D models. Take some time and manipulate the models to see a
3D view. Complete this worksheet as you go through the models and have
fun exploring!!!

Conclusion Questions
1. Use this Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences
between plant and animal cells.

2. Which cell model(s) was a Prokaryote? Explain how you knew using
evidence from your chart.

3. Which cell model(s) was a Eukaryote? Explain how you knew using
evidence from your chart.

4. List the structures that all three cells have in common.

Date: 9/17/15
Unit: Cells
Lesson Title: iCell
Objective:
o Identify the specific parts of the cell
o Describe the functions of each part of the cell
o Identify similarities and differences between plant and animal cells
Drill Question:
I am the organelle that captures energy from the sun and uses that
energy for photosynthesis. Who am I?
I store materials such as water, lipids and carbohydrates in the cell. I
am much larger in plant cells than in animal cells. Who am I?
I help transport proteins throughout the cell. They sometimes refer to
me as the "highway" of the cell. Who am I?

Activity 1:
Class 1,3, and 4- Students will use their device and download the app
called iCell. Students will use the app to explore an animal, bacteria, and
plant cell. The students will complete a worksheet as they explore each cell
where they will write the function of each organelle in the cell. The students
will then complete conclusion questions comparing and contrasting plant,
bacteria, and animal cells as well as identifying the eukaryotic and
prokaryotic cells.
NOTE: Students with technology may be paired with those without
technology (max. people in a group 2-3)
Closure: What is your favorite organelle and why?
