CURVE TRACER
Synopsis
The transistor is the fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, and its presence is
ubiquitous in modern electronic systems. It is undoubtedly the most widely used device in
electronics, be it analogue or digital. It is used as an amplifier, switch, diode, and capacitor in
electronic circuits of all kinds, and this makes studies of transistors extremely important. Traditional
methods of plotting this curve are tedious and time consuming, and involve manual adjusting of
parameters and taking readings. If you're a semiconductor manufacturer, accurate device
characterization is probably something you care about. However, the average lab doesn't have much
use for such a piece of gear. Some audio manufacturers still use curve tracers to help closely match
pairs of transistors, or, yes, vacuum tubes. So the question arises how to characterise curves for the
one who need it? The answer is Curve Tracer.
This project is initiated with the aim to successfully plot the characteristic curve of various available
two terminal and three terminal devices namely diode, transistors etc. The project explores ways by
which a conventional microprocessor can be used as an interactive tool in order to implement a very
fundamental aspect of learning electronics by characteristics basic building blocks of circuits and
helping them realise the curve and plot it on their best friend i.e. their own PC.
The project has the potential to step into the industry as the characteristics of the component being
used in the process of designing and developing a system form an integral part of system level
designing. Thus the project hold huge potential based on the market it covers.
The project not only has a potential to develop into a product but also can be developed into a tool
for high school students by helping them practically observe the characteristics of various
electronics components they study.
The project in its current stage aims to build a plug & play device, that helps students to
characterise the unknown component , by only pushing the component into the device (Curve
Tracer) and connecting it to the PC. With few clicks here and there they have their characteristics
curve ready on the PCs screen.
Thus the project Curve Tracer will prove a handy tool amongst people of various backgrounds, as
a plug & play device to readily obtain the characteristic curve and therewith after parameters of
device in no time!
Thus with a basic knowledge of 8085 and its interfacing technique one is in a position to not only
build curves but also build a device that could generate these characteristics curve, so quickly!!!

The project in its current state is developing as planned in laid out time frame, with sufficient
amount of background research ending with successful validation of the concept.
In its present stage, schematic has been designed and its validation is being carried out with
complimentary set of experimentation to reassure proper working of the designed circuit.
In the immediate future, designing of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) will be carried
out, with further checking of the designed files under various parameters. The entire plan for
the development of the project i.e. 8085 based CURVE TRACER and its timeline is
reflected in the Gantt Chart, following the details of the working team.
