High School Qatar. The Calgary
students distributed pamphlets,
water and informative gifts to spread
awareness among students and
faculty. The event was held through
a collaborative programme between
UC-Q and DeBakey High School.

come alive on students cheeks. Kids
pranced on jumping castles and sprinted across the football pitch where they
couldnt resist an array of bouncy slides.
The season came alive at the Spring
Festival of Gems American Academy
and Wellington School last Friday with
kids and grown-ups joining in the fun.
Parents were as excited as teachers and the principals couldnt hide
their glee.
Volunteers helped by servicemen
from the US military base worked
hard at every activity booth and activities focused on ample physical exertion. Obstacle course, archery, zorb
balls, maze, tunnels added zing to the
fun. Little kids hooked the ducks and
splashed around at the free colouring
station.
Dunk the teacher was the favourite
activity with students sharing a hearty

laugh at the expense of the educators.

Terry Gamble, Head of School and
CEO at the Gems American Academy,
said: The rst spring festival of our
school has a heavy element of community involvement. It is a fund-raiser as
well and we plan to hold another one
around the same time next year.
Jonathan Dey, Principal of Gems
Wellington School, praised the mix of
fun and frolic in which students, parents and teachers bonded to put up
a great show. We have students from
40 nationalities, said the sprightly
principal holding a SLR camera with a
large lens.
The Gems Spring Festival at Al Wukair, sponsored by Commercial Bank
of Qatar, also had a weekend Bazaar
where handicrafts, clothing and jewellery vendors hawked their wares
from natures honey, decorated pottery, beauty products and Indian outts to designer Turkish clothes.
Young children from both schools
sang on stage and drummers exuded
rhythm and energy.

4D animation items at their stall. This

From miniature and gigantic sculptures and paintings to a diverse range
of video installations and interactive
game design, the exhibition is a journey into the creative pursuit of each of
the 15 Chinese artists in their distinctive artistic language. The exhibition is
more than a visual feast to every art
enthusiast in search of unique works of

art by some of the most important artists from China today.

Al Riwaq was divided into 15 separate galleries, each of which houses
representative works of each artist.
Nearly 600 miniature sculptures
depicting familiar Chinese artworks
and events are displayed in Gallery
1. Arranged in a terrace-eld of sand,
the sculptures are as interesting as
the 56-year-old artist Hu Zhijun, who
worked as a peasant for most of his
life. He was especially commissioned
for the exhibition which marks his debut show.
One of the stunning installations
at the expo is an eight-metre high
and 12-metre large steel tank weighing 40 tonnes in the middle of a
white cube gallery space. Titled Freedom, the enormous installation by ar-

tistic duo Sun Yuan and Peng Yu contains a black suspended hose from
which water gushes and sends it into
violent contortions at high pressure.
Celebrated
expatriate
artist Huang Yong Pings six-tonne giant sea monster Wu Zei is also featured in the central circular 22-metre gallery hovering above ground. A
chandelier hangs within the head of
the giant octopus-like creature while
its eight tentacles contain sea-born
wastes in their grip. The title means
cuttlesh in Chinese and was chosen
as the rst syllable is a homophone
for pollution. A total of 37,000 silk
worms worked for two years to complete the Moon Garden installation
by Liang Shaoji. The installation is

an ode to the rise and fall of the ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and to the present condition of
the region. Two curving acrylic sheets
resemble winding rivers and covering
the sheets is a thin layer of raw silk,
but visitors can see the Arabic word
serenity in the soft light within the
silk pattern.
Artist Xu Zhen packed oil paint of
various colours into pastry bags to
create his stunning three-dimensional oil paintings Under the Heaven.
The dense mouth-watering swirls of
paint convey a sense of revelry evident of the artists Triumph inside the
gallery. Xu Zhen is a brand synonymous with experimentation with artistic method or language.

creativity. It depicts the artists reimagining of iconic architecture to

Liu Xiaodongs paintings created on
site, part of which is the portrait of
the former Minister of Cultures family representing three generations,
a heretofore-unprecedented depiction of a local family by a foreign artist.
Video game designer Jenova Chen, who strives to create
emotional experiences to gamers,
presents Journey his most signicant work to date. Players awake
in a desert and must nd their way
to a distant mountaintop during
which they encounter darkness and
confusion as well as enlightenment
and glory.
Wang Jianwei creates his pieces
out of wood, metal, rubber and paint
to express his desire to perfect form
and control. He creates his works
based on a concept and methodology he calls rehearsal in which the
works freely evolve and transform
according to impulses and emotional responses in the process of creation.
Other artists whose works are
displayed at the four-month long
expo are Hu Xiangqian, Li Liao, Jennifer Wen Ma, Wang Jianwei, Xu
Bing, YangFudong and ZhouChunya.
The exhibition is curated by the
internationally acclaimed New Yorkbased Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang
following the immense success of
his solo exhibitionCai Guo-Qiang:
Saraab, held at Mathaf ve years
ago.
Cai Guo-Qiang said: The exhibition is intended to inspire and resonate with young Arab artists who
are pursuing creativity and reecting on their own contribution to
global culture. At a time when major exhibitions and biennials are focused on popular topics such as the
environment, violent conict, or on
textual analysis of the artists cultural identities and the external context of the works, there continues to
be a lack of direct inquiry into the
art and artists practices themselves.
The exhibition raises this question to
the contemporary art world.
The curator also authored a
528-page exhibition companion
book of the same title.
Presented by Qatar Museums
under the leadership of its Chairperson, H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the exhibition is the major highlight of the
Qatar China 2016 Year of Culture,
a landmark initiative developed to

deepen understanding between nations and their people through mutual exchanges of arts, culture, heritage and sport.
The exhibition is supported by
the China National Arts Fund, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Artron Art Group, and Beijing Imaginist
Time Culture Company.
The exhibition is open for public
viewing until July 16 from 10.30am
to 5.30pm on Sundays, Mondays
and Wednesdays, 12noon to 8pm
on Thursdays and Saturdays and
from 2pm to 8pm on Fridays. It is
closed on Tuesdays.

Nissan win PIBAQ Inter-Car Division title

to capture the crown of the Inter-Car
Division of Pinoy Basketball of Qatars
(PIBAQ) 19th Season.
Nissans Benzon Mendoza, who
was chosen as Most Valuable Player of
the Season, reigned supreme in most
of the game even as his team-mates
gave him all the much needed support
to clinch the hard-earned victory in the
midst of loud cheers from the crowd.
AAB Toyota tried to inch closer to
the 12 point edge of Nissan which refused to budge with their consistent
focus on the game that they maintained until the nal buzzer.
A game plan to let Nissan key players carry out balance team play was
the key for their win as Mendoza led
with 20 points and supported by Allan Mallari with 16 points, Darwin Talastas with nine points and Thirdie Bazan
with eight points.
Both teams played with pride to carry their companys banner that they deserved to bring home the bacon but in
the end there is only one champion, said
coach Francis Mercado, PIBAQ Game
Commissioner and PYC Youth Director.
The battle for third place in the tournament turned out to be more intense
as the game ended with double overtime as Porsche earned the dramatic

Secret for right-size corned beef

may be substituted equally, gram for gram. It does

not provide a hammy avor, but it does have an anti-oxidizing property to keep cured meats pinkish. Always use gloves when working with any curing product. Curing Salt #1 is available online via Butcher &
Packer and Amazon.
Ingredients
For the brine
1 quart water, preferably ltered
5 tablespoons (50 grams) kosher or sea salt
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon honey
2 cloves garlic, lightly crushed
teaspoon black peppercorns, lightly crushed
1 teaspoons pickling spice
1 teaspoon Curing Salt No. 1 (optional)
4 cups ice cubes
For the short ribs
2 pounds bone-in short ribs
2 quarts water, plus more as needed
5 tablespoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon pickling spice
2 medium carrots, peeled or scrubbed well
1 small onion, cut in half
1 small red beet, cooked and cut in half (optional, for colour)

orning beef is laissez-faire DIY, and by that

I mean its set-it-and-forget-it charcuterie.
Pickle a beef brisket for ve days, then cook
it for a few hours, and youll end up with several pounds of luscious corned beef.
For me, the problem was never in the doing. It
was in the quantity. Depending on the cut, beef brisket weighs in at between four and 14 pounds. I just
couldnt, I just shouldnt, have several pounds of
corned beef in my refrigerator. I do love it, so I set
out to nd a variation suited for my small household.
It turns out short ribs make a mighty ne stand-in
for brisket, and the resulting pickled meat slices and
hashes just like any corned beef brisket. Corned short
rib is my answer to authentic, right-sized corned beef.
When shopping, look for thick, bone-in short ribs.
I rst tested the accompanying recipe with the slim,
boneless short ribs commonly sold at the grocery
store. They were a disaster: The meat was not very
thick and, once cured, was impossible to slice. When
I used bone-in short ribs, their generous 2-to-21/2inch-thick slabs of meat proved to be the better option; the resulting corned beef was tender and easy
to slice.
Its easy to cut away the bones at home, separat-

ing the thick chunks of beef marbled with fat from

the at bones. When you smear those bones with tomato paste, roast them in a hot oven, then cook them
for hours with carrots, onions and plenty of water, a
brown, beefy stock for sauces or soups is all yours.
Or if you have a deserving dog, abandon all thoughts
of stock and use the raw bones to reward good behavior.
To become corned beef, the meat spends plenty of time in salty circumstances. Salt is the tenderiser, the preservative, the avouring. First, a few days
in a wet brine that is salty, sweet and aromatic with
mustard and coriander seed, bay leaf and cinnamon.
Then the beef cooks in a salty bath until tender.
Corned short ribs
4 servings MAKE AHEAD: The meat needs to brine
for 5 days and then must be cooked for several hours
before serving. The corned short ribs can be refrigerated in their broth (submerged) for up to 10 days.
Curing Salt #1, also called DQ Curing Salt, Prague
Powder or Pink Salt, is a nitrite, a curing agent. It is
made up of sodium chloride (table salt) and sodium
nitrite and is dyed pink to distinguish it from table
salt. Cathy Barrow uses it to improve the appearance
and avor of cured meats.
Nitrites give bacon, corned beef, salami and many
other cured meats their appealing rosy colour. If adding nitrites worries you, skip it. Modied celery juice
powder works in the same way as Curing Salt #1 and

Steps
For the brine: Combine the water, kosher or sea
salt, light brown sugar, honey, garlic, peppercorns,
pickling spice and curing salt, if using, in a medium
saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the salts and
sugars have dissolved; once the mixture starts to
bubble at the edges, remove it from the heat. Add
the ice cubes (to kick-start the cooling process), and
cool completely before proceeding.
For the short ribs: Stand the meat on a cutting
board with the ends of the bones visible. Hold a
sharp chefs knife against the bone, then cut the
bones away from the meat in one fell swoop; discard
the bones. Place the meat in a large bowl or zip-top
bag big enough to hold both the meat and the brine.
Use a plate to weight the meat in the bowl, or remove all the air from the zip-top bag before sealing
it, to ensure the meat is entirely submerged. Refrigerate for 5 days, stirring the meat and brine every day.
When ready to cook, rinse the meat under cool
water and discard the brine. Combine the water, salt,
pickling spice, carrots, onion and beet, if using, in a
medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring
until the salt has dissolved.
Add the brined meat; cover and bring to a boil,
then reduce the heat to low. Cook for about 3 hours,
covered, until fork-tender. Check the liquid level in the
saucepan frequently, adding more as needed so the
meat remains submerged.
Remove and discard the carrots, onion and beet.
Cool and store the meat in the liquid, in a covered
container in the refrigerator, for up to 10 days.

ay Strongwater is an American
design maven celebrated for
his opulent creations that double as art-pieces. In a world of
clinical-like minimalism, The designer is enamoured with creating showpieces that are meant to razzle-dazzle. Doha Today caught up with the
designer at the Tanagra boutique at
the Villaggio Mall, where much of his
showpieces from his home collection
are on display.

You were a successful jewellery

designer prior to launching your
home collection, what made you
move into that direction, and was it
organic to do so?
I was known throughout the 80s
and early 90s for creating big and
bold fashion jewellery. I was living in
New York City at the time, and I was
creating those showpieces for Oscar
De La Renta, Vogue and Harpers Bazaar Magazine. My jewellery was sold
at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf goodman, Harrods and other wonderful
luxury stores all around the world. I
was known for creating big statement
necklaces, wonderful earrings and
such. As time progressed, fashion become more minimal and there was a
massive grunge movement in the 90s,
and all of a sudden Oscar De La Renta stopped showing statement jewellery on the runway. The fashion magazines stopped visiting us much as
well. Was it a conscious decision for
me to start creating home collections?
I think not actually. I remember I was
working on creating this new earring
one day twenty years ago and I continued to add some parts to the right
and to the left, and I was using those
different bezels and twisted wires and
all those jewellery components, and
all of a sudden it turned into a beautiful picture frame. That was the rst
picture frame Ive ever created. It was
created with the intention of gifting it
to our buyers and editors, and such.
We got such a positive response from
the buyers and some of the stores
that weve sold our jewellery to, asked
us to create a collection of 10 piec-

We are in fact celebrating the
brands 20th Anniversary this year.
We made ve limited-edition styles
that were limited to 20 pieces each,
and Im happy to say that weve sold
most of them out in about 4-5 months.
Tanagra even had some of those pieces in store as well.

the time, I was both creating jewellery
and working on the home collection,
but by 1998, I started to focus solely
on growing and expanding the home
collection. So in a way, I do believe it
was organic for me to start a home
collection, and to channel the luxury
that I injected into the jewellery pieces that I used to create, through the
home collections that weve been creating ever since.
Can you shed some light on the
pieces that you create through the
brands home collection?
Our pieces are quite whimsical,
opulent and have a lot of character.
Our pieces are hand made. We have a
team of 55 designers that make most
of our pieces in upstate New York and
Rhode Island. I think what our clients can notice is the feel of the hand
and craftsmanship of our designers

through the pieces we create, and I

think thats what our clients ultimately look for and expect from us. We
produce two collections a year and
each collection is made up of about
80 pieces. We started to incorporate
more materials into the collections recently. Were working with glass, and
mixing it with metal. Weve started to
bring out some porcelain pieces as
well. Weve also starting to add some
furniture pieces, coffee tables and ottomans to our production. I like to
think that our canvas is expanding,
and its quite exciting to witness.
How did this partnership Between Jay Strongwater and Tanagra
come to be?
We love our Partners, and the reason why we love selling at Neiman
Marcus, Bergdorf Goodmans, Harrods and love being here at Tanagra in
the Middle East is that there are not a

Are you open to creating a capsule collection that is inspired by the

Middle East, and Qatar Specically?
Of course we are. Looking at the
Middle Eastern decretive design, it
already incorporates many of the elements and design patterns that we
do. Thats why in some respects i feel
that the clients in the middle east
have a better understanding of what
we do than clients elsewhere, and i
think that has to do with the fact that
they have a air for the opulent because they grew up with it. We have
pieces that are inspired by the middle east in our collections, and in
conclusion we are up to creating a
capsule collection that is inspired by
the Middle East.
Are there any plans for expanding the Jay Strongwater brand in Qatar, maybe a boutique in Doha?
Certainly. As I said we are very
honoured to be part of the Tanagra
Family and the parent company, Shalhoob. Were looking to grow our business with the help of our partners,
and we feel very fortunate to be in
partnership with Tanagra. We hope
the opportunity of launching a standalone boutique in the near future
presents itself, because it would be
very interesting to create a creative
environment that encompasses what
we do.

Act early to prevent kidney stone

very year World Kidney Day is celebrated to make the general public aware of kidney diseases which
affect millions of people worldwide. It is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and
the International Federation of Kidney
Foundations (IFKF). The theme for 2016
will focus on Kidney Disease & Children:
Act Early to Prevent It. It is therefore crucial that we encourage and facilitate education, early detection and a healthy
life style in children, starting at birth and
continuing through to old age, to combat
the increase of preventable kidney damage including acute kidney injury and
chronic kidney disease and to treat children with inborn and acquired disorders
of the kidney.
Kidney diseases are silent killers,
which will largely affect your quality of
life. When your kidneys are damaged,
waste products and uid can build up
in your body, causing swelling in your
ankles, vomiting, weakness, poor sleep,
and shortness of breath. If you dont
treat them, diseased kidneys may eventually stop working completely. Kidney
stones are fairly common disorders in
Middle East. Each year, more than half a
million people go to emergency rooms
for kidney stone problems. It is estimated that one in ten people will have a
kidney stone at some time in their lives.
A stone may cause no problems but
often it causes pain. Most kidney stones

are small and pass out with the urine.

Some stones become stuck in a ureter or
kidney and cause persistent symptoms
or problems. There are various treatment
options to remove a stuck stone. About
half of people who have a kidney stone
develop another one at a later time in
their life. Drinking plenty of water each
day may prevent a recurrence.
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones can form within the
kidney, within the ureter (the tube
draining urine from the kidney) or in the
bladder. They can be many different sizes and shapes. The size of kidney stones
ranges from tiny microscopic crystals to
stones as large as potatoes.
How common are kidney stones?
About 3 in 20 men and 1 in 20 women develop a kidney stone at some
stage in their life. They can occur at any
age but most commonly occur between

the ages of 20 and 40. About half of

people who develop a kidney stone will
have at least one recurrence at some
stage in the future.
How do kidney stones form?
The kidneys lter the blood and remove excess water and waste chemicals to produce urine. Urine travels from
each kidney down a tube called the ureter into the bladder, then out of the body
via the urethra when the bladder is full.
Many waste chemicals are dissolved in
the urine. The chemicals sometimes form
tiny crystals in the urine which clump together to form a small stone.
What are the symptoms of kidney
stones?
In some cases, a kidney stone lies in a
kidney and causes no problems or symptoms. You may not be aware that a stone
has formed. If symptoms do occur, they
include one or more of the following:
Pain from a kidney. A stone that is

stuck in a kidney may cause pain in the

side of the abdomen.
Renal colic. This is a severe pain
which comes and goes and is caused by
a stone that passes into the ureter. The
stone becomes stuck. The ureter squeezes the stone towards the bladder, which
causes intense pain in the side of your
abdomen. The pain may spread down into the lower abdomen or groin. You may
sweat or feel sick due to the pain.
Blood. You may see blood in your
urine (urine turns red) caused by a stone
rubbing against the inside of your ureter.
Infection. Urine infections are more
common in people with kidney stones.
Infections can cause fever, pain on passing urine and increased frequency of
passing urine.

Zoolander 2 tries harder to up the ante

fashion calendar, Fashion Week
has ended in New York, bringing
with it a few nice clothes plus the
usual over-the-top weirdness bizarrely-themed runway shows and
front-row fashionistas teetering on
stilt-like heels, swathed in feathers
and smoothed out with dangerous
doses of Botox.
Not coincidentally, Ben Stillers Zoolander 2 also opens this week, sporting everything we just mentioned
except maybe the few nice clothes.
Of course, unlike Fashion Week,
every element of Zoolander 2, both
directed and co-written by Stiller, is
aimed at being silly and ridiculous
like the original 15 years ago, yet
more so. And yet more so ends up
being the problem. This sequel ups
the ante so aggressively and relentlessly that you may nd yourself pining for a relaxing night in front of a
2001-era TV, watching the original
on a VHS tape.
Thats not to say that there arent
moments when youll laugh out loud,
especially when your favourite celebrity or designer appears for a cameo
(is there anyone Stiller COULDNT get
to appear in his lm?) But eventually youll start to feel like your smile is
sort of freezing on your face (Botox
or no Botox); in your heart, youve just
stopped laughing.
But boy, those cameos. We begin
with none other than Justin Bieber,

Anyway, soon the guys are pulled
into the plot involving those rock-star
murders, and a possible actual Fountain of Youth. This is where Mugatu

Well, hes in jail fashion jail. Once he
gets out, were ready for the nal confrontation, where suddenly every designer youve ever heard of appears.
Valentino? Check. Hilger too. The
Wangs Alexander AND Vera. Marc
Jacobs. And of course, the doyenne of
fashion, Vogue editor Anna Wintour,
gamely doing comedy. The quantity
of all these cameos we havent even
told you about the rock stars is impressive.
Yet, like too many blinding sequins
on a runway gown, quantity can be a
bit stiing, too.
Zoolander 2, a Paramount release,
is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture
Association of America for crude content, a scene of exaggerated violence,
and brief strong language. Running
time: 102 minutes. Two stars out of
four.

MojoJojo turns Umar speech into music track

producer and composer Akshay Johar aka MojoJojo has
lent support to the students movement by creating a track inspired by
Umar Khalids speech made on Sunday
when he surfaced after nearly a fortnight.
Khalid one of the six students
accused of raising anti-national slogans in the JNU campus on February
9 delivered a speech on the campus premises on February 21 wherein
he asserted that he was not a terrorist, and opined that the BJP government needed an excuse to target the
campus.
The track, which features excerpts
from Khalids speech, has been rendered in MojoJojos trademark style of
bass-rich electronic music.
MojoJojo, whose debut album
Shots Fired was released last year,
says he was inspired to create the
track, titled Yeh ladai, after hearing
Khalids emotional speech.
He talks about how he was
subjected to a public trial by the
(electronic) media, where ctitious
facts about him were created for
the sake of TRPs, how because of
his religion he was branded a terrorist, how there was a witch hunt
for him and his family, among oth-

er things, MojoJojo in an email interview.

Most of all, he talks about how
his ght is against oppression by the
state and not against the country, because he is a son of the soil, like you
and me. He talks about how without
dissent, a university is like a prison,
he added.
MojoJojo, whose rst tryst with music was at the young age of 10, says his
aim behind creating the song was to
project the matter in a new light.
Over the past several days, he (Khalid) was portrayed in a certain light by
sections of the media and the state. I
thought that with this song, the matter
could be projected in a new light, given
a fresh perspective of sorts, he said.
While calling himself a proud citizen of the country, MojoJojo also said
he was saddened with the way the
matter has been dealt with so far.
My stand on the entire matter is
that, of course, anything against our
beloved mother land should not be
tolerated. I am a proud citizen of this
country but when you charge students,
who are protesting peacefully, with
sedition... when you target an institution, when you launch a propaganda
against it, when you doctor speeches,
you are ravaging the basic social fabric
of secular India, he observed.
It saddens me that this matter has
been dealt with such heavy-handedness and, instead of mitigating the
damage already done to our secular
society, things are only getting worse.

Car is real hero of Sawaari: Director

three contradicting characters - a
cop, a psycho and a driver - that
are headed to different destinations on this journey. The real hero of our lm is the Contessa car,

While it was usually available in
white or cream colours, the makers chose a black colour Contessa
for the shoot.
We thought black would be an
interesting choice, given that this

is a thriller, he said, adding that

shooting in the car was very challenging.
Most of the story unfolds on
the road, inside the car, and the
shooting part was very challenging. At all times, the car features
three characters and hence, there
wasnt any room left for another
person to sit with a camera and
shoot, Guhan said.
The camera was attached to
the car and the actors had to deal
with the shot.
When the car moves, the camera would roll and the actors
would call the shot. If a shot didnt
go well, we had to reshoot it from
the beginning, he added.
The other challenge was to

shoot in the forest, which was inundated with wildlife.

The lm was planned to be
shot at night, but we couldnt because we were shooting in the
dense forest where wild elephants
were known to loiter, so we had
to shoot only during the day, said
Guhan, who guarantees the lm
has elements to appeal to all sections of the audiences.
The three characters represent
different type of audiences. Although this is a thriller, audience
will be surprised by comedy at
the most unexpected places. The
unique screenplay will be one of
the highlights, concluded Guhan.

Karthik Yogi and Sanam Shetty.
