OD Phases, Phase Tasks, and Competencies

The OD consulting phases follow an action research sequence and process. Although
they are presented serially in the map, in practice these activities and consulting
functions may be recycled and revisited many times in an OD consulting
engagement. There are also times when the work may play out as phases within
phases, as when a practitioner collects preliminary data to help define a more
specific
contract with a client, or when a specific intervention is being designed as
part of a larger change effort and this intervention requires its own contracting
and data-collection process. In other instances, such as use of large-group
interventions,
most of the phases may be carried out in association with a single event
(Bunker and Alban, 1997). The map describes consulting work associated with
each major phase of the OD process. Obviously, the listed tasks, though
characteristic
of each phase, are not exclusive to that phase; many of them are also operative
in other phases of the consulting process.
