Practical 4
To observe the property of acids and base
Objectives:

Observe the reaction of acid with metal

Observe the reaction of acid with carbonates

Observe the reaction of acids with base

Measure the pH of acid, neutral solution and base

Material:
1.

Hydrochloric acid 1.0 mol dm-3

2.

Sodium hydroxide 1.0 mol dm-3

3.

Magnesium tape

4.

Wooden splint

5.

Test tube

6.

pH meter

7.

Glass dropper

Procedure:
A. Reaction of acid and base.
1. Add approximately 1 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm-3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube. Add a
small piece of magnesium tape into the acid. Observe the reaction. Test the gas with
burning wooden splint.
2. Add approximately 1 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm-3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube. Add a
small piece of calcium carbonate (egg shell) into the acid. Observe the reaction. Test the
gas with burning wooden splint.
3. Add approximately 1 cm3 of 0.1 mol dm-3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube. Add equal
amount of 0.1 mol dm-3 of sodium hydroxide into the test tube. Observe for any signs of
reaction.

B. Measuring pH of acid, neutral and basic solution.
pH of acid
1. Add approximately 4 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube. Measure
the pH of the solution using a pH meter.
2. Add 1 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube, add 9 cm3 of distilled
water. Mix well. Measure the pH of the new solution. (Calculate the new concentration of
acid after dilution).
pH of base
1. Add approximately 4 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 of sodium hydroxide into a test tube. Measure
the pH of the solution using a pH meter.
2. Add 1 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 of sodium hydroxide solution into a test tube, add 9 cm 3 of
distilled water. Mix well. Measure the pH of the new solution. (Calculate the new
concentration of base after dilution).
pH of neutral solution
1. Add approximately 4 cm3 of distilled water into a test tube. Measure the pH of the
solution using the pH meter.

Observations:
1. Tabulate the observations made for section A and B. Include chemical equation where
necessary.
Questions

1. Calculate the pH of the 1.0 mol dm-3 of the following solutions:

a) Hydrochloric acid
b) Nitric acid
c) Sulphuric acid
d) Potassium hydroxide
e) Calcium hydroxide
2. Briefly describe the difference between a strong acid and weak acid. Provide suitable

examples.
