Method:

1. Rinse the burette with some hydrochloric acid and fill it with the acid.
2. Rinse the pipette with some sodium carbonate solution. Measure 25cm3 of sodium
carbonate solution in the pipette and run it into the conical flask
3. Add a few drops of phenophthalein to the conical flask and swirl to mix the contents.
4. Take the initial burette reading
5. Slowly add the hydrochloric acid to the conical flask, swirling constantly, until the
solution just turns from pink to colourless on adding one drop of acid.
6. Take the final burette reading and determine the volume of hydrochloric acid added. This
is your rough titration.
7. Repeat the titration until you have three volumes of acid which are within 0.1cm 3. Each
time you can add acid rapidly until you have added about 1cm3 less than you added in
your rough titration, then almost close the tap and add the acid drop by drop until the end
point is reached.
8. Record your results in a table.

9. Calculations
1. Find the average volume of acid used in the titration
2. Calculate the number of moles of sodium carbonate used in the titration
3. Write a balanced equation for the reaction
4. Deduce the mole ratio in which the reactants combine
5. Using the ratio determine the number of moles of hydrochloric acid used in the titration
6. Determine the molar concentration (mol dm-3) of hydrochloric acid.
7. Determine the mass concentration (g dm-3) of hydrochloric acid
Questions
1. Define volumetric analysis
2. Define analyte and state the analyte used in the experiment
3. Define standard and state the standard used in the experiment
4. Analyze data obtained.
