    ABSTRACT

    This design report deals with geotechnical investigation of a site and design of foundation for an
    assumed multi-storied building. The report starts with preliminary description of project
    objectives and investigation sites. A thorough literature review of relevant topics is presented.
    The basic principles and pragmatic procedures for all the field and laboratory tests are collected
    by consulting text books, Indian standards and their special compendiums. The field
    investigation includes boring, SPT procedure and disturbed soil sampling. Other vital tests
    include mechanical analysis of soil, determination of specific gravity and water content among
    others. The shear strength parameters for the sample are obtained from direct shear test.
    Moreover, the electrochemical tests are conducted in accordance to standard procedure. The test
    results are implemented in the calculation of bearing capacity of soil, and its factor of safety
    against settlement and liquefaction.
    Mat foundation is designed by using STAAD.Pro software for modeling and STAAD
    Foundation Advanced for comprehensive design. The total cost for construction of the mat
    foundation is estimated to be Rs.84, 91,006. This estimated cost is less than 25% (10.81% to be
    exact) of the approximate cost of construction of the superstructure.
