GET THE MOST OUT OF NEW DIGITAL SURROUND
AND DOLBY PRO LOGIC, WITH TECHNICS TIMES 6 CONCEPT
Recognising the importance of these subwoofer
and surround channels, the new Technics
SA-AX6 features the Technics Time 6 concept,
a further development of our Times 4 and Times 5
concept. This provides each of six channels
(front left/right, centre, surround left/right and
subwoofer channels) with the same large 100W
power, adding up to a total of 600W of Class H+
amp output in a Home Theatre Receiver.
This means awesome home theatre sound quality
with full power reproduction of the dynamic
digital surround soundtracks of movies recorded
with Dolby Digital or MPEG2 audio. Powerful
surround matched with deep bass from a
subwoofer adds great realism to conventional
Dolby Pro Logic*3 reproduction as well.

Reliability, High Quality, and High

Power with Class H+ Amp Circuitry

Adaptive Subwoofer Control Brings

Cinema Bass Impact

Our Class H+ amp

circuitry is ideal for
home theatre amps.
Its very efficient, so generation of heat is
minimised. And its got plenty of output power to
spare to help guard against clipping distortion,
which can occur when a momentary signal peak
requires more power than an amp can deliver. Its
the perfect high-power amp for home theatre
use! Dynamic Headroom, an indicator of reserve
power available, has been improved to an
impressive 2dB, compared with 1.2dB of our
previous receiver amps. This means that reserve
power, or momentary peak power is about 1.5
times that of rated power.

A movie soundtrack is created with cinema

reproduction in mind. In a movie theatre, sound
pressure levels can reach 105dB at peak action
points. But in the home its more usual to reduce
the volume to around 70dB. Because of human
hearing characteristics, this creates a tonal
imbalance where the bass sounds disproportionately
weak. To compensate, Technics has added a
function called Adaptive Subwoofer Control. This
automatically raises bass level as overall volume
is reduced. Therefore you can listen at home with
the same kind of natural balance that you would
experience in a movie theatre. And you can keep
your home listening volume at a reasonable level
without sacrificing realism.

Discrete Multi-Channel Ready

The latest development in movie theatre sound is
the Dolby Stereo Digital, digital discrete multichannel surround system. A home version of the
Dolby Stereo Digital is now available, with new
digital coding named 5.1 channel Dolby Digital
(AC-3). The use of Dolby Digital for the main audio
tracks of DVD, the latest AV media, to reproduce
powerful movie atmosphere and sound is
becoming more widespread. The Technics SATX50/AX6/AX720 are ready for discrete multichannel surround reproduction. A full six inputs
(front left/right/centre, surround left/right, and
subwoofer) are provided to accept the analogue
signals from a Dolby Digital/MPEG2 decoder or
DVD player with 6 channel output.
The SA-AX6 has six separate amp circuits to
amplify all of these channels. The SA-TX50/AX720
have five amp circuits, so they can handle all
channels except the subwoofer.

Bass Compensation

For the full impact of todays feature films in your

home, you really need the deep bass tones of a
subwoofer. Only a subwoofer can pump out those
powerful low-range vibrations that are key to the
realism of everything from explosions and jet
engines to dinosaur footsteps and disaster
scenes. Just think how much less involving a film
would be without the bass frequencies that help
build up suspense and excitement without a
subwoofer you can only hear part of them. Film
directors and their sound engineers also work
hard to create surround-sound effects that make
the audience feel like theyre part of the action.
Powerful reproduction of these calculated effects
is required to do them justice. The latest audio
formats make new demands on a sound system.
Dolby Digital*1 and MPEG2 are sound formats for
DVD, the digital video disc with rapidly growing
hardware and software since its debut in 1977.
Dolby Digital has an independent LFE (Low
Frequency Effect) channel meant for subwoofer
reproduction, as well as completely separate left
and right full-range surround channels for highly
effective results.

Home THX Cinema Mode with DSP
With the SA-TX50 Home THX*2 Control Receiver
you can use the Home THX Cinema*2 Mode to
enjoy more realistic film sound than is possible
with Dolby Pro Logic*3 decoding alone. The
surround sound decoding of film soundtrack is
realised through Dolby Pro Logic surround
circuitry, which extracts the spatial effects of
Dolby Stereo from video tapes and discs. The
goal is to take the Dolby Surround output and
reproduce the soundtrack in immaculate
condition. As movie soundtracks are designed for
playback in large theatres, not in living rooms,
additional processing is required in order to allow

the most accurate translation from the theatre to

the home environment. DSP (Digital Signal
Processing) is used to attain high quality in Dolby
Pro Logic decoding and three kinds of Home THX
processing.

Virtual Battery
Operation the
Nearest Thing to
the Ideal Audio Power Supply
Super Linearity and Super Sound
Quality MOS Class AA
The best device for use in an amplifiers output
stage is the MOS-FET (metal oxide semiconductor
field effect transistor). In contrast to the common
bipolar transistor which is a current amplication
device, the MOS-FET uses input voltage to
amplify output current, much like a vacuum tube.
This gives the MOS-FET oustanding transfer
characteristics particularly in terms of linearity,
as confirmed by its audibly superior sound quality.
Technics MOS Class AA takes maximum
advantage of MOS-FET linearity in its class A
voltage control amp, while using bipolar transistors
for the current drive amp, since the MOS-FET is
not the optimum for such large current
applications. The two amp circuits are linked by a
Special Class AA Bridge Connection, creating a
new kind of power amp stage. This epoch making
MOS Class AA Circuit reaches its full potential by
employing newly developed Technics original
MOS-FET devices. This virtually ideal amp offers

effectively reduce noise from the power supply
circuit. By taking advantage of MOS-FET
characteristics, this new concept provides
performance rivalling that of a battery, the ideal
audio power supply, thereby assuring exceptional
sound quality.

As the capacitor handles large currents (the

same number of amperes that drive the speakers)
its performance is closely linked with sound
quality. Capacitor vibration can easily spoil that
quality. The MASTER Series capacitors feature
an improved electrolyte and aluminium foil
construction for maximum performance. The
latest version of these aluminium electrolytic
capacitors feature an important development in
their internal construction. Capacitors of this type
employ separators between the aluminium foil
cathode and anode. These separators provide
structural strength and they keep the eletrolyte in
uniform contact with the aluminium foil. After a
thorough review of possible separator materials,
we selected Japanse TA-KE (ta-keh) bamboo. The
new separator is made of TA-KE pulp, taking
advantage of TA-KEs strong fibres. This
contributes to outstanding vibration damping
characteristics and improved conductivity in the
latest MASTER Series electrolytic capacitors. The
result is more dynamic, lifelike sound that brings
out the delicate nuances of musical expression.
Selection of each of the materials used in this
capacitor required persistent and repeated
listening tests. It was only when the combination
of materials was exactly right that we decided
that this was truly the optimum capacitor for
audio applications.
