Extended Writing Qn 2
Competition is healthy. Do you agree with the statement? Justify your stand by
giving relevant examples where appropriate. You should write at least 350 words.
(60 marks)
You can take one of either 3 stands agree, disagree or partially agree/neutral
stand.
Below are some ideas you can use for any one of the above stands. Identify and sort
them out under two headings Agree / Disagree. You can use ideas from both parts
for a Partially Agreeing or Neutral Stand.
Students strive for better performance, grades, results, scores, sports attempt
to win, will train harder, to break records, to pass the benchmark, achieve targets,
promotes good health and healthy living

collaboration put into practice To paraphrase Holier than thou , people out to
prove by means, foul and fair, better than thou attitude Entertainment improve
quality of music, sound, songs, movies, better acting, productions, people get their
moneys worth,
bribery, stealing efficient workforce from competitors, income
and profit maximization intent can lead to using questionable strategies to beat
competitors
Food business better agriculture yields, competition between food
outlets, provide better services to attract customers, try new recipes, sell healthier
and tastier foods and drinks, Breeds jealousy and ill-feelingskeeping up with the
Joneses can cause negative effects, breeds selfishness, arrogance, malice and a
host of harmful feelings, cooking and singing competitions exchange of ideas and
learning takes place
Breakdown in relationships, friendships, enmity, inability
to accept loss or lesser achievements Education field improve the quality of
teaching and learning,
competitions motivate one to do better, challenge one to
stretch ones ability, skills, push one to the limits to go in search of info and
knowledge as knowledge is power, Produce new inventions, creations, innovations
Promote R & D in all fields, Competing to keep up with the Joneses can be
good and bad,
Healthy, gentlemanly competition, sportsmanship spirit and fair

play is encouraged not foul play

There are many other reasons and examples to support any one of the 3 stands you
may take.
