PURPOSE AND SCOPE

This Engineering Standard is intended to provide a common set of standard pipe supports along with
requirements for their use and selection.
2.0

DEFINITIONS
Anchor

A rigid restraint providing substantially full fixation permitting neither

translational or rotational displacement of the pipe.

Anchor, No-Moment (3Directional Restraint)

A rigid restraint providing 3-directional restraint, not permitting

translational displacement of the pipe.

Contractor

See either "Field" or "Shop" for definitions of Field and Shop

Contractors.

Contractor, Field

The pipe erection contractor or construction company responsible for

installing the piping and pipe supports.

Contractor, Shop

The pipe fabrication contractor responsible for fabrication of the piping.

Gap

When used with the words Guide or Limit Stop, refers to a specific
amount of free movement allowed.

Guide (2-Directional
Restraint)

A restraint that prevents a horizontal pipe from moving laterally and

vertically (upward) or a vertical pipe from moving in any horizontal
direction.

Guide (Lateral Restraint)

A restraint that prevents a horizontal pipe from moving laterally.

Limit Stop (Axial

Restraint)

A restraint that prevents a horizontal pipe from moving axially.

NPS

Nominal Pipe Size

Pipe Stress/Flexibility
Analysis

The static or dynamic analysis of a piping system for various loads such
as thermal displacement, weight, pressure, earthquake, wind and
dynamically applied loads.

Pipe Stress/Flexibility
Analyst

Person(s) performing the Pipe Stress/Flexibility Analysis of a piping

system.

Pipe Support Standard

Standard details contained within this package. These supports should

be used to support the pipe whenever possible.

Piping Large Bore

Piping 2" NPS and larger.

Piping, Small Bore

Piping 1 1/2" NPS and smaller.

Reinforcing Pads
(Repads)

Plates, rolled or otherwise formed to fit the contour of the pipe, welded to
pipe in order to strengthen a pipe wall and/or prevent distortion.

Slide (Weight Support)

A support designed solely to support the weight of a pipe. It does not

significantly restrain the pipe in any other direction.

Slide Bearing

A commercially available assembly of components designed to reduce

friction between sliding surfaces. Typically used in piping systems with
pipe shoes or stanchions to reduce friction between the pipe
shoe/stanchion and the surface it is sliding on.

Special Pipe Support

(SPS) Drawings

Typically a specially designed and engineered support detail where a

standard detail is insufficient or special support action is required.
However, at the option of the project, supports normally covered by
standard details may have detailed drawings generated (i.e. Spring
Supports).

Spring Supports

An assembly of components consisting of a spring designed to provide

support for horizontally or vertically oriented pipe as it is displaced
thermally in the vertical direction.

Spring Supports,
Constant

A Spring Support that provides a nearly constant supporting force as the

pipe is displaced thermally in the vertical direction.

Spring Supports, Variable

A Spring Support that provides variable supporting force as the pipe is

displaced thermally in the vertical direction.

Support Assembly

All of the Support Components required for assembly of a complete

support (Pipe Support, Riser Support, Rod Hanger Support, etc.).

Support Components

Individual constituent parts of the Pipe Support Assembly such as:

individual commercial hardware components, bars, plates or AISC
structural shapes.

Supports, Anchor Clamp

A commercially available assembly of components designed to anchor

pipe. Typically made from plastic and used to control vibration in piping
systems with instrumentation sensitive to vibration.

Supports, Flange

An assembly of components bolted to a piping flange designed to

support or restrain horizontally oriented pipe.

Supports, Pipe

Typically, any assembly of components designed to support or restrain

pipe.
The term Pipe Supports in this Pipe Support Standard is also used to
describe a category of pipe supports that includes Slides, Guides, Limit
Stops and Anchors designed to support or restrain horizontally oriented
pipe.
Supports, Riser

An assembly of components designed to support or restrain vertically

oriented pipe.

Supports, Rod Hanger

An assembly of components consisting of at least one rod (in tension)

designed to support horizontally oriented pipe. They usually are limited
to a maximum pivot angle of approximately 4 out-of plane.

Supports, Stanchion

An assembly of components consisting of a pipe and base plate

(oriented vertically) welded to the supported pipe. They are designed to
support or restrain horizontally or vertically oriented pipe.

Supports, Sway Struts

Assembly

An assembly of one or more Sway Struts designed to support and/or

restrain pipe in one direction. Multiple Sway Struts may be used in
combination of each other.

Supports, Trunnion

An assembly of components consisting of a pipe and closure plate

(oriented horizontally) welded to the supported pipe. They are designed
to support or restrain horizontally or vertically oriented pipe.

Support Family, Pipe

Pipe Supports with similar size ranges, pipe line specifications,

insulation, tracing requirements and temperature ranges are grouped
into "families".

Support Family, Riser

Riser Supports with similar size ranges, pipe line specifications,

insulation, tracing requirements and temperature ranges are grouped
into "families".

Support Family, Rod

Hanger

Rod Hanger Supports with similar size ranges, pipe line specifications,
insulation, tracing requirements and temperature ranges are grouped
into "families".

Support Family,
Stanchion

Stanchion Supports with similar size ranges and reinforcing pad

requirements are grouped into "families".

Support Family, Trunnion

Trunnion Supports with similar size ranges and reinforcing pad

requirements are grouped into "families".

Sway Strut

An assembly of components designed to support and/or restrain pipe in

a single axis. They allow an essentially frictionless pivot in plane.
However, they usually are limited to a maximum pivot angle of

approximately 4 out-of plane.
