I consider it a privilege to write this letter of recommendation for Debra Berk for Teacher of the Year. I have worked with Ms. Berk for two years as her principal. Ms. Berk has brought invaluable knowledge and expertise to our learning community and is a role model for each of us. Based on my time working with Ms. Berk, I believe that her dedication to students, her high degree of professionalism, and her leadership are evidence of why she would be valuable member in any learning community. Since, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Ms. Berk in the areas of instruction, assessment, and school improvement, I have witnessed her student-centered approach to learning and instruction. She devotes endless time to planning for instruction and reflection of student learning. She differentiates instruction for all students with attention to students who are highly performing as well as performing below grade level. Our students benefit from her commitment to their learning and growth. I have also seen her compassion and patience when supporting students with special needs. As a teacher, she successfully supported students with emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and autism, as well as English Language Learners. Ms. Berk uses student achievement data to guide instruction in an effort to maximize student achievement. Ms. Berk used the Data Team process to analyze and refine instruction with the intent of increasing student learning. The focus of the data team was to develop problem solving skills and thinking as students solved rigorous math problems. Her ability to analyze DIBELS data and probe deeper using a universal screener has supported her students progress in reading. Ms. Berk creates lessons and learning experiences that meet the varied needs of our learners. Her colleagues look to her as a role model for differentiated instruction and advocacy for all students. Ms. Berks students benefitted from her data driven approach to planning and implementing instruction. Ms. Berk offers a deep child-centered approach to her profession and a commitment to continually growth as an educator. She has successfully developed project based learning experiences for her students, which focused on improving student achievement for first grade students in multiple content areas in real world contexts. Knowing that developing literacy is critical in first grade, Ms. Berk independently attended professional development sessions to support student learning. As a result, she is a teacher leader who supports her colleagues in implementing effectively reading instruction for developing readers. She approaches all new learning and challenges with optimism and confidence. It is without hesitation that I give Debra Berk my recommendation for Teacher of the Year, as she is a tremendous asset to our students, teachers and organization as a whole and a model for each of us. Sincerely, Andrea Davidson Principal
