P3- Collaboration, Consultation, Leadership, and Advocacy

Students will demonstrate an understanding of and capacity to collaborate, provide consultation,

leadership, and professional and client advocacy.
An area of strength for me is my ability to work together and provide support for issues
of interest for me. I recently met with a leader in community colleges and shared my vision of
developing an educational system in which marginalized students can excel by providing them
with adequate supports and providing marketing material that addresses their barriers. The
leader complimented me for my efforts in prior work that dealt with the importance of providing
role models to marginalized populations who look like the students we are attempting to serve.
During this conversation, I learned when you collaborate, advocate and provide consultation
people who can influence policies will listen. When I proposed the framework of developing a
video utilizing the framework of Albert Bandura with the goal of allowing marginalized students
to visualize themselves as college graduates I had no idea the video would have such a positive
impact. I believe, the success of the video was due to my ability to ensure I included other
individuals in the project, from marketing and communications department to professionals in
fields who do not work in college access. I also ensured the recognition was not on me but on the
individuals who agreed to be a part of the video. Having had success with one video regarding
college access, I would like to partner with a nonprofit organization to develop youtube videos
aimed towards employers and allow them to realize the money they can save by hiring a disabled
person and the personal impact they can have by providing self-sufficiency. During Advanced
Placement, I interviewed employers who had never hired an individual with a disability and one
that had. The difference between the employers stem from lack of knowledge for the services
VR can provide and internal resistance that was preventing those employers to increase their

employee pool that was preventing them from hiring more qualified disabled people. Videos and
social media is a great avenue to illustrate the positive impact the largest minority group,
disabled individuals provide to our state.
