The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is the premier Open and Distance Learning (ODL)
institution in Sri Lanka where students can pursue their studies from foundation level to the doctoral
level. Due to the nature of the teaching methodology adopted by the University and the infrastructure
we posses, the OUSL is able to serve a large student population spread throughout the country.
Currently, there are more than 40,000 students studying at the OUSL, who are being served by eight
Regional Centres and eighteen Study Centres located around the country.
The mission of the University is to enhance access to high quality, affordable and relevant education
through ODL methodologies and ensure life-long learning opportunities to face challenges in a
knowledge society. In order to achieve this mission the university adopts many strategies, always
keeping its students as central focus.
The University offers more than fifty five different study programmes through twenty-four
Departments belonging to five Faculties. It also has number of Centres and Units to facilitate student
support, research, consultancy, liaison with the industry, staff training, quality assurance, etc.
Keeping par with the technological developments that are taking place in the education sector, the
University has embarked on a concerted effort to provide our students with increased learner support
through modern day technology, including providing online support through our Learner
Management System, Video conferencing by linking the main campus to number of Regional and
Study Centres, online testing, etc.
The University also offers many different types of scholarships to support the students who are in
financial need. We continue to enhance our scholarship fund so that we would be able to provide
scholarships to as many students as possible.
I sincerely hope that as a prospective student you will be able to identify a study programme that is
suitable to your prospective career.
I wish you all the success in all your efforts to acquire a recognized qualification from our University.
Wishing you all the very Best!
Prof. S. A. Ariadurai
Vice Chancellor
It is a great pleasure to issue a message for the student guidebook of the Faculty of Engineering
Technology of the Open University of Sri Lanka, which is one of the leading faculties offering
Engineering Degree Programmes in Sri Lanka.
The Open University of Sri Lanka was established on 22.07.1980 by the Gazette Extraordinary No.
87/10 of May, 08, 1980 by Hon. J R Jayawardane, the then Minister of Higher Education.
Presently, the Open University of Sri Lanka has five Faculties namely Faculty of Engineering
Technology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities & Social
Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences and 24 administrative divisions. The University also provides its
services through a network of 08 regional centres & 18 study centres, in different parts of the country.
The University administration assists the students in numerous ways by providing materials, financial
related matters, conducting of final examinations and issuing certificates, student welfare, providing
infrastructure facilities etc. With all this support, I believe that anyone who wishes to pursue studies
in open distance learning mode can accomplish their higher educational qualifications successfully.
Wish you all the very best with your studies at the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the OUSL.
Mrs. W. L. Vindya Jayasena
Registrar
Let me welcome you as one of the prospective student of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the
Open University of Sri Lanka.
The Faculty of Engineering Technology is in existence as one of the engineering faculties under the
University Grants Commission almost 30 years and has already produced large number of graduates,
diplomats and certificate holders in Engineering and Industry related disciplines. Unlike other
conventional universities after registering with us you will follow study programmes in distance
mode. As we are committed to the open and distance education concept even if you are employed it
will be not a barrier for you to acquire higher educational qualifications. The uniqueness of our system
is that you can enter to the programme at different levels based on your qualification and go up the
ladder up-to the postgraduate level. But, as you are going to follow engineering or industry related
programme, you need to attend certain academic activities where face to face learning is involved.
Being a pioneer of open and distance education we have introduced pedagogical methods and tools
that help you to learn effectively and efficiently through the distance mode. Faculty has taken
maximum effort to deliver the courses of our programmes through the regional network which is
spread throughout the country. This enables you to participate in many of the academic activities
without coming to the central campus situated at Nawala.
As per the decision of the University Senate the faculty will redefine its credit rating as per Sri Lanka
Qualification Framework (SLQF) guidelines and will in future comply with SLQF requirements.
Therefore, at present the Faculty is taking steps to revise the curricula to comply with SLQF
requirement. More details of these changes will be notified to you in due course.
This Guidebook provides you more details about the study programmes of the Faculty, facilities
available, fee structure and other relevant information.
I am proud to state that almost all our graduates are working as engineers both in state and private
sector and some of them have obtained their postgraduate degrees in well recognised universities of
the world. So, I am sure that by deciding to follow a programme of the Faculty of Engineering
Technology at the Open University you will select a right choice and your career prospective as a
professional in the field of engineering will be a success.
Wish you very best!

3.5 Programme of Study and the requirements for the award of the Higher
Diploma / Honours Degree
The Programme of Study consists of a combination of courses and training modules as determined by
the Senate and as specified in the Rules. The Rules shall specify the category, the level and the credit
rating of each course, and the type and the duration of each training module in each study
programme.
A student should acquire either by successful completion in accordance with the Scheme of
Assessment or by exemption, as set out in the Rules, course credits and industrial training
requirements as referred to in section 3.5.1 for the award of the Higher Diploma, and in section 3.5.2
for the award of the Degree.
The courses selected for the award of the Higher Diploma in Technology in an approved discipline
shall be so as to meet the minimum requirements in each category as shown below in Table 1. If the
credits gained in any category exceed the maximum limit shown, only such maximum shall be used in
computing the total credits. In situations where a student has obtained credits in excess of maximum,
such excess credits shall be eliminated by considering level 3 courses first and then 4, 5, and 6, such
that the maximum possible credits are counted in each category. The credits gained in foundation
levels 1 & 2 courses cannot be counted towards the award of the Higher Diploma. In addition, the
student needs to complete training modules (A pass in Workshop practice and Industrial training
module/s equivalent to 30 weeks duration) relevant to the specialisations (Section 3.8). The complete
list of courses, with prerequisites, is given under Section 3.9.

given below]
Scheme of Assessment
2.1
The assessment of a student in any course shall consist of two components, viz.: Continuous
Assessment and Final Examination.
2.1.1
The content, nature and weightage of each of these components shall be in accordance
with the Rules relating to the scheme and method of assessment as determined by the
Faculty.
2.1.2
A student shall be eligible to appear at the Final Examination of any course only if
he/she has been awarded a minimum of 40% for the Continuous Assessment
component of that course. The eligibility thus obtained to sit for the Final Examination
of a course shall be valid for a period stipulated by the Senate.
2.1.3
A student who fails to obtain 40% for Continuous Assessment or fails to obtain a grade
C or higher at the Final Examination before the lapse of the eligibility in respect of any
course, shall be deemed to have failed that course and shall be awarded the grade F.
Such a student may repeat that course by re-registering subject to section 2.1.6.
2.1.4
The overall assessment mark (Z%) of a student in respect of any course shall be based
on the Continuous Assessment mark (X%) and the mark obtained at the Final
Examination (Y%) and shall be computed and grades awarded as follows:
For courses offered by the Faculty of Engineering Technology;
Z=
85 < Z
0.5 X + 0.5Y , if Y 40
Y , if Y < 40
:A+
Z < 20: E
A student who is awarded a grade C-, D+, D or E for a particular course cannot count
that course towards his/her credit requirements unless he/she re-sits the Final
Examination on a subsequent occasion and obtains a pass grade.
2.1.6
2.1.7
before a date stipulated by the Faculty may be allowed to re-register for that course in
a subsequent academic year without being considered a repeat student. The date of
commencement of the course shall be as determined by the Senate, for the purpose of
this Rule.
2.1.8
2.2
A student who is eligible to sit for the Final Examination in a course (under section
2.1.2) but has not done so may postpone sitting such examination, for a period
stipulated by the Senate, without being considered as a re-sit candidate. Such a
student shall be awarded the grade RX in respect of that course in which he/she is so
absent.
The assessment of training modules shall be carried out in accordance with the Faculty
approved guidelines, by an Assessment Panel appointed by the Faculty.
2.2.1
2.2.2
Awards
There shall be two awards in the Programme of Study as referred to in section 3.1 Bachelor of
Technology Honours in Engineering Degree, and 3.2 Higher Diploma in an approved
technology discipline.
3.1
A candidate who obtains a minimum of 177 credits with grade C or above from level
3 and above and satisfies the training requirements for the award of the Degree of
Bachelor of Technology Honours in Engineering as specified in Section 3 and Section
4 of the Regulations and satisfies any other academic requirements imposed by the
Senate, and applies for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Technology Honours
in Engineering in a prescribed form, shall be awarded the Degree.
3.1.2
3.1.3
If a student fails to satisfy 3.1.1 within the stipulated maximum period shall be
awarded the Honours Degree without a Class.
3.1.5
The Board of Examiners shall also recommend the award of medals and prizes to the
Senate.
3.1.6
Grade Point Average (GPA) shall be computed by considering the courses at levels 5
and 6 for a student who has satisfied the conditions for the award of the Degree of
Bachelor of Technology Honours in Engineering in accordance with Regulation 3.1,
in line with the procedure set out in sections 3.1.6(a), 3.1.6 (b), and 3.1.6 (c).
3.1.6(a)
The courses at levels 5 and 6 that proceed towards the calculation of credits for the
