HW3

This document contains instructions for homework 3 in SPC 409 due on March 22. It includes 3 problems: 1) sizing the vertical tail of an airplane to achieve a weathercock stability coefficient, 2) estimating stability and control derivatives and trim requirements for an engine-out twin engine airplane, and 3) calculating rolling moments induced by the wake of a B-747 on 3 following aircraft and determining if they can safely maneuver out of the situation.

SPC 409, Spring 2017

HW3, Due Wed Mar 22, In Class

Problem 1: Consider the following characteristics for an airplane

S = 21.3m2 , b = 10.4m, zw = 0.4m, d = 1.6m, and c/4w = 0

Size the vertical tail to achieve a weathercock stability coecient of 0.1 /rad. For a preliminary
design, consider v = 3.13m and assume that ARv = 4.
Problem 2: A twin engine airplane has the following characteristics

S = 980f t2 , b = 93f t, Sv = 330f t2 , ARv = 4.3, v = 37f t, zv = 3f t, v = 1.0, and Sr = 66f t2

Each engine delivers 14, 000 lb thrust whose line is 16f t laterally oset from the airplane center.

1. Estimate CNr and CLr .

2. Estimate the signed rudder deection required to trim the airplane if the left engine fails at
a ight condition of V = 250f t/s and = 0.002378slug/f t3 .

3. If the aileron eectiveness, is CLa = 0.1/rad, what would be the signed associated aileron
deection required to trim the airplane?

Neglect the yawing moment due to ailerons.

Problem 3: Consider the problem introduced in the last discussion session (Problem 2.19 in the
textbook). That is, a following airplane experiences a rolling moment due to the wake of another
aircraft. Recall the expression of the generated rolling moment on the wings of the following aircraft
VF Sf CLw F
LF = WG
VG bG 2

Consider a B-747 (W = 636, 600 lb and b = 195.68f t) to be the generating aircraft at its approach
speed 275 ft/s.

1. Estimate the resulting rolling moment on (a) Convair 880, (b) Jetstar, and (c) NAVION if
they encounter the wake of a B-747.

2. Will these airplanes be able to safely get out of that situation? Assume that the aileron
deection is constrained between 20 . The plan views for the three following airplanes are
shown below.

Use the following data:

Convair 880: S = 2, 000f t2 , b = 120f t, c = 18.94f t, and approach speed 275 ft/sec.
Jetstar: S = 542.5f t2 , b = 53.75f t, c = 10.93f t, and approach speed 220 ft/sec.
NAVION: S = 184f t2 , b = 33.4f t, c = 5.7f t, and approach speed 176 ft/sec.
Assume = 0.002378slug/f t3 .
