Reliability
Tested and Proven Ready to Work
Proven Reliability
The 966H features many of the components proven in
previous models, which contribute to the reliability of
this machine.
Quality Control
Process controls are being implemented at worldwide wheel
loader facilities to ensure delivery of a consistent product.
Increased emphasis is being placed on in-process validation,
inspection and continual feedback for improvement is being
provided to assembly lines.
Dealer Support
The Caterpillar global network of independently-owned
dealers is the best in the world at providing support to keep
your loader up and running. Known for parts availability and
technical expertise, Cat dealers are partners in your business.
Remanufactured Parts
Major components are designed to be remanufactured
and provide multiple life cycles. Strict reuse guidelines and
unparalleled quality control ensure that Reman products
provide superior reliability and durability. Reman products
are stocked in distribution centers around the world and
are ready to install minimizing downtime, maintaining
productivity and profitability.
3
Durability
Built Strong to Last Long
Powershift Transmission
The planetary powershift transmission features heavy-duty
components to handle the toughest applications. Control
throttle shifting and electronic clutch pressure control
enhance productivity and durability.
Axles
Axles are designed by Caterpillar for durability in all
operating conditions. The front axle is rigidly mounted to
the frame to support the weight of the wheel loader and
withstand internal torque loads, as well as external forces
encountered throughout operation.
Structures
The Cat exclusive Integrated Braking System reduces axle oil
temperatures extending brake and axle life. This is especially
valuable in applications requiring long haul distances.
The articulated frame design features a durable box-section
engine frame and rigid four-plate loader tower. Frames are
robotically welded for excellent weld penetration, resulting
in durable component joint fusion.
Linkage
The Z-bar linkage generates excellent breakout force and
good rack back angles for better bucket loading and load
retention. Lift arms are fabricated steel plates connected
by a cast cross member, providing superior strength while
maintaining excellent forward visibility. Bucket tilt movement
through a cast tilt lever and forged tilt link provide strength
and excellent visibility.
4
Productivity
Move More, Make More
Load-Sensing Hydraulics
The load-sensing hydraulic system automatically adjusts to operating conditions, providing only the
hydraulic flow required by the implements for improved fuel efficiency and greater rimpull. Hydraulic
functions can be used simultaneously for improved productivity. Lift force has also been increased for
improved performance.
Ride Control
The Ride Control system allows operators to travel at higher speeds, over rough terrain while retaining
the load. The benefit is decreased cycle times and increased productivity.
Ride Control is optional in some regions.
5
Versatility
Built For Your Operation
Performance
Fusion couplers and work tools eliminate the offset, thus
providing payload performance virtually identical to pin-on.
Durability
The patented Fusion locking system pulls the tool tight, for a
rock solid fit over the life of the machine. No rattle, no wear,
no problem.
Visibility
The open design of Fusion maximizes visibility to the work
tool and enables quick and easy engagement/disengagement.
Flexibility
Cat Fusion offers work tool interchangeability from the
924 through the 972, maximizing attachment investment
and simplifying the job site.
6
Operator Comfort
Work Comfortably and Efficiently
Operating Environment
The spacious cab offers many ergonomic features.
Seat
The standard air suspension seat, is six-way adjustable and features automotive-style lumbar support
for maximum comfort. Implement controls are integrated with the right-hand armrest and adjust for
comfortable and convenient operation. An optional heated seat is available for additional comfort.
Visibility
Large center glass panel and wet-arm wiper provide great visibility for all conditions. Downward sloping
hood and rear wet-arm wiper provide excellent visibility to the rear of the machine. Optional rearview
camera with color monitor is available to help see behind the machine. Optional lighting packages are
available to meet various applications.
Steering Systems
Standard steering wheel is low-effort with approximately two and a half turn lock-to-lock. Optional
Command Control Steering provides full machine articulation with 70 of wheel turn. It also provides
transmission forward/neutral/reverse and upshift/downshift switches on the steering grip.
Vibration
Articulation neutralizer valves reduce frame-to-frame contact. Automatic upper and lower lift kick-outs
and cylinder dampening reduce jerking and bouncing. Optional Ride Control reduces machine pitching
and provides a smoother ride over rough terrain.
7
Serviceability
Easy to Maintain Easy to Service
Cooling System
The perforated and corrugated grill minimizes debris
build-up and swings out for easy cleaning and access
to the cooling cores.

Operating Costs
Move More. Lower Costs.
Fuel Efficiency
Data from thousands of customer machines show
Cat Wheel Loaders are among the most fuel efficient
machines in the industry. Several features contribute
to this excellent fuel efficiency:
Load-Sensing Hydraulics Adjusts to operating
conditions providing only the hydraulic flow required
by the implements for improved fuel efficiency and
greater rimpull.
ACERT Technology Manages air, fuel and injection
to deliver only the amount of fuel needed.
Engine Idle Management System Reduces the engine
speed when idling, saving on fuel consumption.
Free Wheel Stator Torque Converter Improves power
train efficiencies in load and carry operations.
Variable Shift Control Allows operator to select
optimum shift patterns based upon the application.
Operator technique and machine configuration can
dramatically impact fuel consumption. Here are some
potential fuel saving tips:
Get Trained Operator technique can impact fuel
consumption by as much as 30 percent, therefore
training is vital.
Get the Right Machine Equip the machine with proper
tires and work tools. Radial tires are preferred. Heavier
tires require more fuel. Use lowest rpm required for the
job. Use automatic transmission 2-4 mode when possible.
Adjust variable shift control for the application.
Get in Position Spot loading targets in the right
position. Avoid traveling more than twice the machine
length. Avoid lift lever detent and use transmission
neutralizer.
Get Loaded Load in first gear and keep engine below
1,600 rpm. Raise and tilt smoothly and dont pump
the bucket.
Get Moving Use brakes when changing directions,
not full throttle FNR.
Get Unloaded Dont raise the work tool any higher
than necessary. Keep engine rpm low and unload in
controlled manner.
Idle Down Set the parking brake to engage Engine Idle
Management System.

Owning Costs
Move More. Lower Costs for Best Value.
Product Link
Gathers machine diagnostics and provides system data remotely to customers, dealers and Caterpillar.
EquipmentManager provides powerful tools like mapping, maintenance/repair scheduling and
troubleshooting to reduce downtime and operating costs.
Parts
Cat dealers can supply the majority of parts over the counter. When the dealer doesnt have the part,
worldwide Cat parts distribution centers can deliver most parts within 24 hours.
Resale Value
Owning quality machines is a very important factor in maintaining resale value. Caterpillar not only
supplies quality machines, but also provides product support to maintain the reliability and durability
of the machine.
