AN INTRODUCTION TO MANIFOLDS, by TU

Exercise 1.6
Prove that if f : R2 R is C , then there exist C functions g11 , g12 , g22 on R2 such
that
f f
f (x, y) = f (0, 0) + (0, 0)x + (0, 0)y + x2 g11 (x, y) + xyg12 (x, y) + y 2 g22 (x, y).
x y

Solution.
Let f : R2 R be a smooth function. Clearly R2 is star-shaped, hence we can apply
Taylors Theorem with Remainder, so we see that are smooth function g1 (x, y) and g2 (x, y)
such that
f (x) = f (0, 0) + xg1 (x, y) + yg2 (x, y).
Since g1 (x, y) and g2 (x, y) are C functions, we can apply Taylors theorem with remainder
again, to get

f (x) = f (0, 0) + x (g1 (0, 0) + xg11 (x, y) + yg12 (x, y))

+ y (g2 (0, 0) + xg21 (x, y) + yg22 (x, y))
f f
= f (0, 0) + x (0, 0) + y (0, 0)
x y
+ x g11 (x, y) + xy(g12 (x, y) + g21 (x, y)) + y 2 g22 (x, y).

Since C is a vector space, clearly the sum of smooth functions is smooth.
