Overview of Regulations
Code of Practice for Safety In Roofwork Now you must carry out a Risk Assessment no
matter what height you are working at. All
UK & NORTHERN IRELAND LEGISLATION parties involved in a building are now responsible
for the provision of a safe workplace, for example
Health & Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 designers must look at how the roofs and facades
are accessed in the future for maintenance. In the
Management of Health and Safety unfortunate event of a person falling from a height
at Work Regulations (NI) 2000 at any time in the future, the building designer will
have liability. Skyway are the experts in this field
Work at Height Regulations (NI) 2005 and will ensure your liability is reduced through
the design, installation and certification of safe

CHAPTER 11
The Facilities Services division of Skyway is dedicated to the recertification of all fall prevention and
suspended access systems, recertification of all personal fall protection equipment (PFPE)
and comprehensive training in how to use these systems. We recommend to our clients that recerti-
fication of these systems is carried out on an annual basis or immediately after the unlikely event of a
fall from height.
Our skilled and fully trained engineers are always available to carry out maintenance works in a
professional manner and ensure that the system recertified is fully compliant, fit for purpose and safe
to use.
Our Facilities Services Department provides the following services to our clients:
Full Load Testing, Certification, Maintenance and Service for all fall prevention
and suspended access equipment
Recertification of Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PFPE) i.e. Harness & Lanyards
RIAI and Engineers Ireland approved CPD course available to all Architects, Property Managers
and Construction Companies
Our core business is the provision of equipment for operatives to work safely at height. With the installation
of this type of equipment come strict and rigorous Health and Safety legislation for its recertification and
maintenance, most notably, Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (General Applications) Regulations 2007,
Part 4: Work at Height and the Code of Practice for Safety in Roofwork.
Cable end swages and splices must be pull tested to 10kN to ensure they are adequate
Skyway Facilities Services carry out repairs to all fall prevention equipment. We will also make recommendations if your
system fails at the time of recertification and where possible, we will endeavor to repair at the time of inspection. If this
is not possible, we will compile a repairs and recommendations report to outline why the system has failed and what is
required to make the system fully operable again.

Skyway is here to share our knowledge and experience with you. Please feel free to contact us should you have any
questions. This service is free of charge and is available to establish your working at height needs. Skyway also provides
free site surveys when required.

Recertification of Personal Fall Prevention Equipment (PFPE)
To use most fall prevention systems and faade access systems, you must have the correct
Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PFPE) in place.
PFPE can be described as harnesses, lanyards, retractable lifelines and associated equipment. It is important that
PFPE be visually inspected before each use. Current Health & Safety legislation outlines that this type of equipment
must be inspected by a competent person at least every six months. Equipment that is worn regularly should receive
more frequent inspections.
Our Facilities Services division automatically includes the inspection of this equipment as part of the annual
recertification process. We document each piece of equipment inspected and include all
details on certification documentation.
Basic care of your Personal Fall Protection Equipment will prolong the life of the kit and also contribute towards
the performance of its function saving your life! Proper storage and maintenance after use is important. PFPE
should be stored in a cool, dry and clean place out of direct sunlight. Avoid areas where heat, moisture, light, oil,
chemicals or other degrading elements may be present.
Skyway supplies all types of PFPE and our price list and full inventory of stock is readily available from our office or
see our website for further details.

Further expanding on our products and services in our Facilities Services Division, we now offer certification
of lifting and handling equipment and associated appliances.
Similar to fall protection equipment and lightning equipment, lifting and handling equipment is subject to a
periodic inspection under the current Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations
2007 and must be carried out by a competent person.
Lifting equipment is also governed by the LOLER Regulations of 1998 (Lifting Operations and Lifting
Equipment Regulations).
The services we provide to our client under Lifting and Handling are:
All types of chains and load restraints e.g. Ratchet straps, tie down chains and binders
4) Hire of Lifting and Materials Handling Equipment e.g. lifts, stackers, pallet trucks, skips & hoists etc.
6) Site Survey to review your existing equipment to provide solutions and make recommendations
A new addition to our Facilities Services Department is the inspection and certification of lightning
protection systems. Following many enquiries from existing and new clients with regard to lightning
protection to be carried out as part of their fall prevention equipment recertification contracts,
we decided to implement this facility to further enhance our current services. Repairs to existing
systems and installation of new systems are also available.
As with any structure, its features and facades change over time. Year after year, weather events such
as extreme temperatures and high winds affect lighting protection equipment. Building upgrades
involving new construction or remodelling and changes to electrical, mechanical or communication
systems can also affect lightning protection systems.
Testing &Maintenance
With this in mind, it is important to maintain the systems effectiveness and therefore inspection and
certification should be carried out annually to ensure that the components of the system are not
corroded or damaged in any way. Also, if your system has had a lightning strike, it is imperative that
the system be tested immediately. Our lightning protection engineers carry out inspection and
maintenance in compliance with BS EN 62305, Protection against lightning (Part 1 4).

Training
Under current Health & Safety Regulations, all users of safety at height equipment must receive correct
training and instruction on how to use this equipment correctly. The below courses are applicable
to building owners, H& S officers, caretakers, property managers, maintenance & facilities personnel.
As industry experts, Skyway has developed and designed specific training courses in the safety at height
discipline and has added several new courses to our existing range.
All our trainers have hands on experience within the industry and are FETAC accredited trainers.
All courses carry a three year certification and are designed to FAS training specification
QA 58/01 Standard.
To take part in this course you must have first completedSafety at Height&Harness Training SHC 1001.
Duration: 2 hours
Safety at Height On SiteTraining (SHC 1003) 073
Course Content
Provides brief overview of relevant Health and Safety legislation and makes you aware
of your duties within the legislation
Be able to wear and check your Personal Fall Protection Equipment (PFPE) i.e. harness, lanyard,
blocks, rope and grab correctly
Demonstrate the use of designated system on site i.e. fall prevention system or suspended
assess system as appropriate including motorised controls with SAS and rescue procedures on
suspended access systems (also known as Building Maintenance Units, BMUs)
Have basic understanding of what to do in the case of a fall incident and subsequent emergency
response including the basics regarding rescue procedures. Detailed rescue training is available on request
Duration:2 hours
Course Content
Following completion of this one hour session the participants will have
an understanding of the following,
Relevant Health and Safety Legislation and an awareness of the duties within the legislation.
It is not a detailed study of legislation this would take a whole day on its own
The factors involved in a fall
Simple, practical guidelines on how to assess the requirements of the Legislation.
The key is Risk Assessment and to consider access as early as possible in the design process
The differences between Collective Protection and Individual Protection and what the
designer should aim for
Practical systems and equipment for gaining access onto roofs and to remain safe while working on same.
Similarly, for future safe access to the faades and atria of buildings for window cleaning,
maintenance and inspection
New developments in height safe access equipment
The difference between Fall Arrest and Fall Restraint and why rescue is a major consideration
Common mistakes made on projects
The need to use specialist subcontractors with Professional Indemnity Insurance detailed design
responsibility should not rest with the architect / design team
Particularly useful to architects, safety consultants, health and safety officers, facilities managers and
engineers as well as main contractors, maintenance personnel, property managers and owners.
