MODERNISATION OF
KRISHNA WESTERN DELTA SYSTEM
PACKAGE NO.28
1) Introduction:-
Ullipalem Channel is an offtake of Isukapalli Channel @KM and it runs for a length
of kms to serve an ayacut of acres with a head discharge of cumecs.
The correction slip to the agreement was issued vide SE's memo no. Dt:- .Accordingly
the design was prepared for construction of SLB at KM 3.50 of ullipalem channel to connect the
fields with village.
Keeping in view of the Canal bed width, side slopes 1 vent (span) of 4.700 M clear span
is proposed. To avoid afflux due to obstruction of abutments , the bed width of can al is increased
to reduce afflux to 0Cm.
5) Foundations:-
As per the HPs the bed level of the Canal at the point of crossing is +1.533 M. The
scour depth is calculated based on Lacey's formula assuming the Laceys silt factor as 1
and foundation level is fixed at 0.6000 M. However, the cutoff level is fixed at +0.000 M
500 mm thick sand cushion is provided below the foundations.
The maximum and minimum stresses are worked out which are as follows.
Sl.No. Description Stress in Stress in Steel Stress on soil
Concrete (Mpa) (T/Sqm)
(Mpa)
The abutments are designed in RCC M-20 using 20 mm MSA. The top width of abutment is
1000 mm and bottom width also 1000 mm. 650 mm thick foundation concrete in RCC M-20 using
20mm MSA shall be provided.
7) Weep holes:
Weep holes of 75f are to be provided with reverse filters as per IS 4558-1995 on front side of
abutments and returns above FS.L at 1.5 m interval staggered both vertically and horizontally to
facilitate the drainage of the back fill soil due to raise in water table or other-wise.
8) Super structure:
450 mm thick deck slab is proposed in RCC M-20 using 20 mm MSA. The reinforcement details
are shown in the drawing.
9) Wearing coat:
Wearing coat of 100 mm thick at center and 50 mm thick at edge is provided in CC M-25 using
20 mm MSA over the deck slab.

Clear cover = 40 mm
Dia of main reinforcement bar (assumed ) = 25 mm
Effective depth = 720 - 40 - 12.5

As per IRC: 21-2000,clause 303.1, from tables 9, permissible flexural compressive stress ( cbc ) for M20 grade
concrete and from tables 10, permissible stress ( st ) for Fe 415 grade steel are as follows
As per IRC: 21-2000, from clause 303.1 for calculating stresses in section, a modular ratio ( E s/Ec ) of 10 may be
adopted
m = 10
r = st / cbc
= 200 / 8.33
= 24.01
k = m / ( m + r )
= 10 / ( 10 + 24.010 )
= 0.294
j = 1 - k / 3
= 1 - 0.294 / 3
= 0.902
Q = ( 1 / 2 ) x cbc x k x j
= ( 1 / 2 ) x 8.33 x 0.294 x 0.902
= 1.105
As per IRC: 21-2000, from clause 305.16.2, for a single concentrated load, the effetctive width may be calculated
in accordance with the following equation
bef = x a x { 1- a / lo } + b1
b / lo = 4700 / 9500
= 0.49
b / lo = 0.40 = 1.48
b / lo = 0.50 = 1.72
b / lo = 0.49 = 1.48 + ( 0.24 / 0.10 ) x 0.095
= 1.71
For the maximum live load bending moment, the two loads of 11.4 t should be kept such that the resultant of the load
system and the load under consideration should be equidistant from the centre of span, details as shown in figure.

As per IRC: 21-2000, clause 305.18.1, distribution steel is to be provided for the resisting moment equals to
0.3 times the moment due to live load plus 0.2 times the moment due to dead load, shrikage and temparature etc.
Top reinforcement:
As per IRC: 21-2000, clause 305.10, shrinkage and temparature reinforcement of 250 mm 2 is to be provided in
each direction
Provide 12 mm dia bars at 300 mm c/c at top to take care of temparature and shrinkage in either direction and
Provide distribution steel of 12 mm dia bars at 300 mm c/c at top
As per IRC: 21-2000, clause 305.16.3, dispersion of load along the span equal to the dimension of the tyre
contact area over the wearing surface of the slab in the direction of the span plus twice the overall depth of the
slab inclusive of the thickness of the wearing surface
For maximum shear, the load is kept at a distance of ' d ' from the support

d) Wind force
A) No water condition
i) Depth of deck in elevation = 0.72+0.275+0.75 = 1.820 m
Horizontal wind pressure for Coastal Region ( as per clause 212.3 of IRC : 6 - 2000 )
= 2 x 79.390 = 158.78 Kg/ sq.m
However, as per clause 212.5 of IRC 6 - 2000, live load is not be considered when the
wind velocity at deck level exceeds 130 kmph.
This force acts at 1.50m above the road level = 6.605 + 1.5 = 8.105 m
Wind force shared by the abutment will be in proportion to the live load reaction
As per clause 212.6 the wind force as calculated above shall not be less than that
obtained by 450 kg/m on deck slab:
= 10.000 x 0.45 = 4.500 t
B) FSL condition
Level of mean retarding surface = 4.910 m
Average height of exposed surface
(5.81 - 4.91) +1.82 = 2.720 m
However, as per clause 212.5 of IRC 6 - 2000, live load is not be considered when the
wind velocity at deck level exceeds 130 kmph.
Thus restricting the wind pressure corresponding to the velicity of 130kmp
= 107 + (119 - 107) / 8 x 2 = 110 kg/sqm
Eccentricity of loads from the centre live of bridge x = ( 7.500 /2- 3.050 )
