KALESHWARAM PROJECT
DESIGN OF DLRB AT KM 10.100 OF KISTAPUR CANAL
KONDAPOCHAMMA SAGAR.
INTRODUCTION
The Alignment of t Main Canal crosses the BT from NARASAMPALLE TO MALKAPUR ROAD
. 10.1 where a Double Lane Road Bridge with 7.5m carriage width is Proposed in the LS and
survey plan. Hence the Design is taken up according to the relevant I.R.C codes & MOST
Drawings.
ROAD LEVEL
The GL / RL is 4.827 m higher than CBL @ the road crossing. Hence the road level is fixed at GL
i.e., + 572.16 m.
SCOUR DEPTH
Mean depth of scour (DSM) is worked out adopting the formula
DSM = 1.34 x Db 2 (1/3)
Ksf
where Db = discharge/m width,
Ksf = silt factor and
DSM = Mean Scour depth.
The Mean Scour depth works out to 0.366 m adopting a silt factor '4.75'. The maximum Scour
depth works out to 0.8 m with 2.0 factor of safety. The corresponding level of scour is + 567.233.
The Pier foundation is fixed at 1.5 m below C.B.L. i.e., @ +565.833. For the Abutment foundations
level is proposed at + 567.57 because they are fully buried and away from side slope.
2
ABUTMENT
The abutments are proposed in CC M15 grade concrete with 40mm MSA well graded 600mm thick
foundation block in CC M15 grade with 40mm MSA well graded.
DECK SLAB
The reinforcement details of deck are proposed to be adopted from M.O.S.T drawings No. SD/101
to SD/122. The deck is proposed in VRCC M25 upto 9.0m span & VRCC M30 for 10m span in
moderate condition. 20 mm thick simple expansion joints are proposed at the free ends of deck over
abutments. The joints are proposed to filled with Asphaltic joint filler. The bearing surfaces on bed
blocks over Abutments and Pier are to be rubbed smooth with Carborandum stones and a thick
Kraft paper be laid over it before casting the deck.

DESIGN OF DECK SLAB:
As per IRC: 21-2000, clause 305.4.2, effective span shall be least of the ( clear span + effective depth ) or
( centre to centre distance between supports )
Clear span + effective depth = 8400 + 697.5
= 9097.5 mm
As per IRC: 21-2000,clause 303.1, from tables 9, permissible flexural compressive ( σ cbc ) for
M 25 grade concrete = 8.33 N/mm2
As per IRC: 21-2000,clause 303.1, from tables 10, permissible stress ( σ st ) for
Fe 415 grade steel = 200 N/mm2
As per IRC: 21-2000, from clause 303.1 for calculating stresses in section, a modular ratio ( Es/Ec ) of 10
may be adopted
m = 10
r = σ st / σ cbc
= 200 / 8.33
= 24.01
k = m / ( m + r )
= 10 / ( 10 + 24.010 )
= 0.294
j = 1 - k / 3
= 1 - 0.294 / 3

Q = ( 1 / 2 ) x σ cbc x k x j
= ( 1 / 2 ) x 8.33 x 0.294 x 0.902
= 1.1046
As per IRC: 21-2000, from clause 305.16.2, for a single concentrated load, the effetctive width may be calculated
in accordance with the following equation
bef = α x a x { 1- a / lo } + b1
a = The distance of the centre of gravity of the concentrated load from the nearer support
b1 = The breadth of concentrated area of the load, i.e., the dimension of the tyre or track
contact area over the road surface of the slab in a direction at right angles to the span
plus twice the thickness of the wearing coat or surface finish above the structural slab
α = A constant having the following values depending upon the ratio b / lo, where b is the
width of the slab
b / lo = 13000 / 8790
= 1.479
b / lo = 1.40 → α = 2.8
b / lo = 1.50 → α = 2.84
For the maximum live load bending moment, the two loads of 11.4 t should be kept such that the resultant of the load
system and the load under consideration should be equidistant from the centre of span, details as shown in figure.

HORIZONTAL FORCES :
Traction force or Braking force on pier :
As per cl.214.3 of IRC:6-2000 the breaking force acts at 1.20 m above the road level

TABLE - 4 OF IRC:6-2010 (Considering basic wind speed 44m/sec at this location i.e., for Hyderabad region as per IS 875 part-3)

The allowable direct and bending stresses for M 20 grade of concrete
(vide table-9 of IRC:21-2000)
Direct stress calculated = 27.75 t/ m² Max in above cases
Direct stress allowable = 500.00 t/ m²
Bending stress calculated = 43.94 t/ m²
Bending stress allowable = 667.00 t/ m²
The main As per IS-456, the min percentage of steel shall not be less than 0.8% of actual area
Case i) to resist the vertical loads including pier.
Total load = 392.23 t
Allowable direct stress for M 25 = 625.00 t/m^2
Area to resist the direct load = 392.23 / 625.00 = 0.6276 m²
Already Provided 141354 cm² > 6276 cm²
Hence O.K
Minimum steel = 0.8 x 6276 = 50.206 cm²

As per IRC - 21, 1986 the minimum steel shall not be in any case less than
Case ii) 0.3% of gross area
Minmum steel = 0.3 x 14.135 = 0.04241 m²
100 = 424.063 cm²
Case ii is requiring maximum steel Area of steel as per case ii is: 424.063 cm²
No of 20 Ø bars = 424.063 / 3.143 = 134.93 say 136 Nos
provide 20 Ø 136 Nos in allround = 427.43 cm²
Case iii) Area of steel required as per cracked section = 0.000 cm²

radius of centre of reinforcement of 500.0 - ( 40 + 10.0 ) = 450.0 mm
Perimetre 2 x Pxr= 2x 3.141593 x 450.000 = 2827.4 mm

Grade of concrete : M 20 r=σst/σcbc 2000 = 29.985
Stress in concrete := 66.7 kg/cm² 66.7
Stress in steel = 2000 kg/cm² k = m / ( m + r )
modular ratio = 10 = 10 / ( 10 + 29.985 )
Stresses at corners: = 0.250
j = 1 - k / 3

= 0.917
Q = ( 1 / 2 )x σ cbc x k x j

Stresses at corners:
Effective depth :
Eff. Depth required = 4.048 x 105 = 23.010 cm
7.645 x 100
< 53.2 cm
Hence O.K.
Reinforcement requirement:
Area of steel in traffic dir 4.048 x 105 = 4.15 Cm²
2000 0.917 53.20
Provide 12 f bars at 200 mm c/c Ast = 5.66 Cm²
Two way shear: Critical section is at 'd/2' from face of the pier
Design shear = 392.23 t
Perimeter at 'd/2' critical section
= 2x( ( 1.000 + 0.532 )+( 14.14 + 0.532 = 32.399 m
Area = 32.399 x 0.532 = 17.236 m²
Shear resistance = 17.2362 x 105 x 0.16 x sqrt 20 = 1233.322 t
Which is more than 392.23 t , design shear
hence safe
