Operational Safety Instruction: Subject: STAND 16 Purpose
Purpose:
This OSI provides the operational information and procedures for using stand 16.
Stand 16 is a MARS (Multiple Aircraft Ramp System) stand and is configured for two Code C
aircraft (e.g. A320, B737) or one Code D or code E or Code F aircraft.
This information is general information and some key points related to using Stand 16. For detailed
information on the Nose In Guidance System and airbridge control, refer to the appropriate
comprehensive manuals. Your company will provide full training on the use of these systems
before you are permitted to use them.

ARRIVALS
Access to stand 16 is normally via taxiway K or D8 and the taxilane west of pier A to the stand.
Behind stand 1 the stand 16 centre line splits to also provide a 16L and 16R broken centre lines.
There is no stand centre line lighting. There are linkages between the airbridges and NIGS which
could cause an error message to be displayed on the NIGS.
Airbridge locations
Before an aircraft enters the stand the airbridges must be positioned in the correct location. If the
airbridge is not correctly driven, via the appropriate HOME button to the correct HOME position,
the airbridge RED/GREEN traffic light on the airbridge will show RED preventing the aircraft from
entering the stand.
NOTE:
a) On 16L airbridge HOME 1 position is labeled HOME on the control panel.
b) When taking the airbridge off the aircraft, move the airbridge back from the aircraft first,
before pushing HOME as the cab automatically rotates and may contact the aircraft.
c) On 16L, if traveling from HOME 1 to HOME 2, manually drive the airbridge forward to near
the centre line before pushing HOME 2, to avoid the fuel hydrant. At HOME 2 a screen
button comes up saying CONFIRM PREPOSITION. Pushing this will turn the green home
light on, on the panel and also the airbridge green traffic light.
DEPARTURES
On pushback there are three commonly used procedures.
1. The aircraft is pushed back away from pier B to the west, started on the pier B taxilane
centre line, and can taxi out under its own power.
2. The aircraft is pushed back to the start position adjacent to stands 15 & 16 for start. From
that position, the aircraft should exercise minimum power on the turn to minimise fumes
entering the baggage hall.
3. The aircraft is pushed back away from pier B and then pulled forward to a marked position
abeam stand 5 for start. This is used to prevent jet fumes from entering the baggage hall
and terminal under certain wind conditions.
On receiving taxi clearance the aircraft will be directed to hold point Spot 1 (on TWY K) or Spot 3
(on taxiway D8).
Note
An aircraft on 16L and 16R cannot push at the same time.
An aircraft on 16R cannot push at the same time as an aircraft on 15L,16L or 17.
An aircraft on 16R must be pushed along the (bent) stand centerline to avoid contact with
an aircraft on 15L or an aircraft on stand 16L.
SECURITY
It is important that arriving and departing passenger do not mix at any time. Any mix of these
passengers could result in both piers being evacuated and re-screened for departures.
If there is an arrival on 16L at the same time as there is a departure on 16R then the airbridge

should not be attached to the aircraft (on 16L) until the 16R departure process is completed. In
most cases this 16L arrival will result in a bus operation from the stand.
Do not enter the main terminal departure level unless you have been through transfer screening.
GENERAL RULES
To maintain On time performance
The Aerobridge should be checked as functional 15 minutes prior to the aircraft arriving
and parked in the correct HOME position. If the aerobridge has been left with a fault
condition from the last flight it could take up to 15 minutes for the engineer to attend to the
issue.
The Nose in guidance system (NIGS) must be activated prior to the aircraft entering the
international apron. At busy times, if the NIGS is not activated Apron Tower may hold the
incoming aircraft on taxiway D8 to prevent blocking other aircraft. If the NIGS is faulty or
out of service, a marshaller shall be used.
The airlines ground handler should carryout a FOD and obstacle check on the stand, prior
to the aircrafts arrival. Obstacles include cargo and baggage equipment parked inside the
red safety lines which should be moved prior to the aircraft entering the international apron.
During LVP a rear of aircraft marshaller is required on the red road before the aircraft can
push back.
If the weather conditions are such that the pushback lines cannot be seen clearly, wingtip
marshals should be used for pushbacks.
There are a number of potential hazards when working on an aircraft stand which will have been
passed onto you as part of your company training program. With these stands having two
airbridges operating, the risk is increased and also the visibility from each airbridge is reduced.
The Left airbridge also has two hydraulic stabilizer legs that deploy when the airbridge is at height
